The Very Thought of You

In the world of romantic comedies, a love triangle of some sort is generally an essential ingredient. How to put a fresh spin on that old standby? Simply make it a love square, which is exactly what happens in the frothy 1998 British comedy The Very Thought of You. The corners of the square are made of three lifelong friends - Frank (Rufus Sewell), a frustrated actor, Daniel (Tom Hollander), a successful music executive, and Laurence (Joseph Fiennes), a bridge teacher to the wealthy - and one quirky young woman named Martha (Monica Potter), who has impulsively fled her life in America to start anew in London. While there are plenty of laughs to be found in each man's time spent with Martha, it is the way the guys relate their experiences meeting her that feels fresh, revealing more about themselves than the woman herself, while filling us in on what really happened in a very non-linear and enjoyable manner. These glimpses at the distinct personalities of each man also serve to give the audience a very detailed sketch of the complicated relationship of the three old friends, so that at times the friendship is more interesting to watch than the pursuit of Martha. Awash in brilliant colors and Martha's energy, the romantic storyline does dominate again in the end, but not before examining and rearranging the idea of the friendship for the three men.
