Witness Witness

Australian Peter Weir's first Hollywood film tells the story of John Book (Harrison Ford), a Philadelphia cop whose life is altered while trying to help Rachel (Kelly McGillis), an Amish woman, and her son Samuel (Lukas Haas), who witnesses a murder in a Philadelphia train station bathroom. After discovering that the murder was committed by a member of his force, Book travels to Lancaster County with Rachel and Samuel and poses as a member of the Amish community to hide from his murderous police peers. While there, love blooms between Rachel and Book, and he finds himself drawn in by the honesty and simplicity of the old-world Amish lifestyle.

"I was trying to tell a simple story about bad men in changing times. The Wild Bunch is simply what happens when killers go to Mexico. The strange thing is you feel a great sense of loss when these killers reach the end of the line." (Director Sam Peckinpah)

A hard, violent, shocking, tragic, stylish, and nostalgic tale about a group of misfits cornered by time and circumstance. Acting, dialogue, direction, score, photography, and especially editing are world class; an authentic American classic.

Starring: Jenny Agutter, David Gulpilil, Lucien John
Director: Nicolas Roeg

      NTSC format
Color, Closed-captioned, Widescreen, Director's Cut, NTSC

This is a story of two worlds colliding. Lost in the wilderness of Australia, a child (Lucien John) and an adolescent (Jenny Agutter) rely on young aborigine Gulpilil in order to survive. Roeg, in his first solo outing as director, also beautifully photographed this mind-massaging 1971 cult favorite. Exuberant score by John Barry.
John is Roeg's young son and later worked with his father using the name Luc Roeg. The  commentary on the Criterion Collection DVD release by Roeg and Agutter is a useful addition.

Dr. Loveless is a man who only exists from the waist up...

Without Limits Without Limits

Starring: Billy Crudup, Donald Sutherland
Director: Robert Towne

                          NTSC format

Without Limits tells the tale of Oregon runner Steve Prefontaine's love-hate relationship with his coach, Bill Bowerman (Donald Sutherland) in the 1970s. The tug of war between the two men -- Prefontaine's passion for running each race as if it will be his last and Bowerman's seasoned, conservative strategies for winning -- becomes a wonderful metaphor for distinct stages of life and attitude. It's the real story of one of America's greatest distance runners, of his career and tragic death.
