Gloaming

Gloaming won his first race as a three year old when he took out the 1918 Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick.  He won three Derbies - the AJC, New Zealand and Great Northern and numerous weight for age events in his career from 1918 as a three year old to 1925 as a nine year old.  He raced 67 times for 57 wins and 9 seconds and was only once out of a place - when he was thrown down at barrier rise in the North Island Challenge Stakes.  He is probably most remembered for the clashes he had with Beauford in 1922.  Their first meeting in the Chelmsford Stakes resulted in Beauford winning by 3/4 length.  In the Hill Stakes Gloaming turned the tables and won by 1.25 lengths.  Beauford won their next encounter, the Spring Stakes and their last meeting in the Craven Plate saw Gloaming overcome Beauford to win by 3 lengths. Gloaming retired in 1925 after a memorable match race against The Hawk for the Ormond Gold Cup at Hastings.  He won the race by a length.  As a nine year old he won eight of his ten starts.  No other horse has equalled his record of wins on Australian racecourses.
