"The Goondiwindi Grey" was one of the most popular horses to ever race in Australia and will always be remembered for his farewell to racegoers at Randwick when he walked onto the track, turned and seemed to bow to the crowd in a final salute.  GUNSYND was most effective over a mile but was so game that he ran third in the two mile Melbourne Cup with 60.5 kg.  He was purchased at the Brisbane sales for $1,300 and was originally trained in Brisbane by Bill Wehlow where he won races but was always beaten in top-class events.  His Goondiwindi-based owners decided to transfer him to Sydney and trainer T J Smith.  With Smith he had 32 starts and won 17.  His record over a mile from six starts was wins in 1970 Fernhill Handicap, 1971 AJC Epsom Handicap, 1971 Toorak Handicap, 1971 VRC George Adams Handicap, 1972 AJC Doncaster Handicap and second, beaten a half head by Triton in the 1972 AJC Epsom Handicap.  A highlight of his career was a win in the MVRC W S Cox Plate. In all he raced 54 times for 29 wins.  He was not a success at stud but his daughter, Ammo Girl, produced the great mare of the 80s, Emancipation.

In a short career, DULCIFY deserves his place among the greats of Australian racing.  At his sixth start he won the VRC Derby but it was as an autumn three year old that he excelled.  At his second start from a spell he stormed home from the rear of the field to beat Manikato and Family of Man in the VRC Australian Cup.  He then won the STC Rosehill Guineas and was beaten by Shivaree in the weight for age STC Tancred Stakes.  At his last start as a 3 year old he won the AJC Derby when jockey Brent Thomson successfully protested against Double Century who was first past the post.  In the spring of 1979 he was unplaced over 5 furlongs, then won the VRC Craiglee Stakes over a mile, was third in the Underwood Stakes on a rain-affected track and had an easy win in VRC Turnbull Stakes.  In the MVRC W S Cox Plate he won by 7 lengths after striding to the lead on the home turn.  At his next start he won the Mackinnon Stakes and four days later went into the Melbourne Cup as favourite.  During the running of the race he was galloped on from behind by eventual winner Hyperno and suffered a shattered pelvis.  He galloped on into the straight before being pulled up by jockey Brent Thomson and as the winner returned to applause, Dulcify's trainer, Colin Hayes, was seen comforting his great performer who could not be saved.  From 21 starts he won 10 races but who knows how many more he may have won.
