HALL MARK
was a very small colt but his appearance was deceptive. As a two year old in the Autumn of 1932 he won three races including the AJC Sires Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes. He began his three year old season with a brilliant win in the Underwood Stakes, was beaten in the Memsie Stakes and was then sent to Sydney for the AJC Derby which he won with ease beating Blixten, the winner of the Rosehill Guineas. On returning to Melbourne he was beaten in the Caulfield Guineas, but won the VRC Derby easily, equalling Phar Lap's race record. In the 1933 Melbourne Cup, regular rider Darby Munro could not make the weight and was replaced by apprentice, J O'Sullivan. Hall Mark was in sixth position to the furlong before taking the lead and winning by a head from Shadow King. He followed with a second in the Williamstown Cup and won the VRC St Leger and was then beaten in the AJC St Leger. As a four year old he was unplaced only twice in eighteen starts, including the Melbourne Cup, in which he finished sixth. One of his greatest victories was in the Doncaster Handicap at Randwick in which he carried 9st 8lb. At stud, Hall Mark did not receive the opportunities he warranted and the best of his offspring was Hall Stand who won the AJC Sires Produce Stakes and Rosehill Guineas. |
