In January 1928, Sydney trainer Harry Telford persuaded businessman David Davis to purchase a yearling sight unseen from the New Zealand Yearling Sales. The yearling was foaled at Seadown Stud in the
South Island and was by the imported sire Night Raid out of Entreaty, whose female line had produced numerous Cups and Stakes winners. On seeing the yearling for the first time (he was lean and gangly and had
suffered from the sea trip across the Tasman), Davis refused to pay the training fees and leased him to Telford. |
