MANFRED was one of the most brilliant and most erratic racehorses of his time.  He was bred at Arrowfield in the Hunter Valley of NSW.  He won the 1925 Victoria Derby by 12 lengths and in the W.S. Cox Plate of that year nearly skittled half the field as he half-bucked at barrier rise.  Manfred went on to fight out the finish with The Night Patrol and win by half a head.  In the AJC Derby, Manfred missed the start by a half furlong.  At the half mile he was two lengths behind the last horse.  Amounis hit the lead but within half a furlong Manfred was up with Amounis and into the straight settled down to win running away.

As a four year old, he won the Caulfield Cup carrying 9st 6lb.  After that he became crankier that ever at the barrier.  He was retired to stud having won 11 races, 5 seconds and 2 thirds.  Manfred's most notable son was The Trump (Caulfield and Melbourne Cups).
