SHANNON was a top two year old winning the AJC Sires Produce Stakes beating the filly Tea Rose.  As a three year old he had only four starts winning the AJC Hobartville Stakes and as a four year old won four from five including the 1945 AJC Epsom Handicap.  Again as a five year old he had only five starts for four wins - his only loss being in the 1946 Epsom when he missed the start by 40 to 50 metres yet

under the weight of 9st 9lb (6l kg) failed by only a half head to beat Blue Legend.  With jockey Darby Munro up, he then won the AJC George Main Stakes by 6 lengths from Flight  (setting an Australasian record for a mile).  In Australia he had 25 starts for 14 wins and was then sold to race in the USA.  He won the 1948 Hollywood Gold Cup by 2 lengths and equalled world records for 9 and 10 furlongs at the Golden Gate Racetrack in San Francisco.  He was then sold to stand next to Bernborough at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky where his best offspring was Clem who won Group I and II races in the late 1950s.

Comic Court

COMIC COURT was a versatile horse who if for nothing else will be remembered for the fact that the great trainer J B (Bart) Cummings commenced his career as Comic Court's strapper.  Comic Court was trained in Adelaide by Bart's father, Jim Cummings.  As a three year old, he won the VRC Derby but it was as a five year old that he excelled.  He won the 1950 Melbourne Cup by 3 lengths with 59.5 kg in Australasian record time for two miles and was then spelled.  Eleven weeks later he beat a field of sprinters in the MVRC William Reid Stakes setting a new course record for six furlongs.  He won 28 races from 54 starts.  He was retired to stud but was not a great success - the best of his progeny being Comicquita, who ran second in the 1962 Melbourne Cup.
