What the box says:

In the sleepy town of Fairwater, a monstrous evil has awakened...an evil so powerful; its reach extends beyond the grave. Director Peter Jackson and Executive Producer Robert Zemeckis unleash a riveting thriller with the most spectacular special effects this side of the hereafter.

For Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox), death is a great way to make a living: ridding haunted houses of their unwelcome "guests." But he's in cahoots with the very ghosts he promises to evict! It's the perfect scam...until he finds himself at the center of a dark mystery. A diabolical spirit is on a murderous rampage, and the whole town believes Frank is behind it. Boasting music by Danny Elfman and co-starring Trini Alvarado, Jeffrey Combs, and John Astin, this supernatural chiller is so fiendishly entertaining, it's scary!

Plot:

On a dark and stormy night, in a rundown mansion, we hear a woman screaming and running. She hides from some creature that arms reach through the wall. Through the kitchen, up the stairs, it finally grabs here. Creepy old woman with a shotgun starts vaguely religiously ranting before shoots the thing.

In the town of Fairwater, a funeral procession begins. In the local newspaper office, they are researching why 30 healthy people have died from heart attacks. We learn in 1964, there was a murder spree in the town. The editor sends Steve the reporter to investigate.

At the cemetery, Frank is passing out business cards to the people at the burial. He is a psychic investigator. Eventually is thrown out of the cemetery. He drives away and runs into a Ray Lynskey’s fence and yard. Ray throws a fit, a big fit.

Hot Chick, also known as Doctor Lucy drives up to the ramshackle mansion for a house-call. Mrs. Bradley has a very creepy resemblance to Lionel’s mother from Dead Alive. Lucy tends to the woman who was screaming and being chased from the beginning of the movie. Mrs. Bradley refuses for her daughter Patricia to leave the house. Lucy spots a large bruise on Patricia’s neck, thinking Mrs. Bradley caused it. She throws Lucy out. Patricia is not to be trusted, she’s a murderer.

Lucy watches news footage of the aftermath of the shooting spree in 1962. 12 people killed by John Charles Bartlett (Jake Busey). No one knows why he went on a killing spree. 15 year Patricia was implicated, in love with Johnny. Ray is Lucy’s husband. We have tension. John Bartlett was executed. Patricia was sentenced to life but given a conditional release 5 years ago. Ray finds another one of Frank’s card. The lights start flickering. The bed begins to levitate. Ray and Lucy are understandably upset by this. She calls Frank who on his way in crashes through more of the fence. HE begins inspecting the place. Frank will take care of the ghosts for not having to pay for the fence. Ray reluctantly agrees.

Frank sets up some kind of device and carries a water pistol filled with holy water. He claims to have the ghosts in a little bag. Ray can’t believe any of this. Frank sees a number on Ray’s head. Ray has Frank leave. We see the thing behind the wall.

Frank drives back to his rundown house. Stuart the ghost and Cyrus the ghost climb out of the trunk. Frank isn’t happy they did such a lousy haunting. The next day, Frank fixes breakfast while the ghosts are just chilling. Judge (John Astin) starts shooting at a ghost dog that has his lower jaw. Hilarity ensues. Judge gets his jaw back, thinking about going back to the cemetery. He’s old and falling apart. Judge also complains that Frank never finishes anything.

Why you should sneeze with your mouth wide open.

Cyrus and Stuart haunt a mansion. Suddenly, babies are flying through the air. The maid and the rich lady are properly freaked. One of the baby’s has Frank’s cards. Frank gets the call. Rich lady has a cutout article about conman Frank and has him leave.

We get the R. Lee Ermey cameo. It is supposed to be the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket. Ever want to see the ghost of R. L Ermey call Michael J. Fox scum, etc..? This is your chance. Frank heads to see Ray’s funeral from a distance.

Ray starts bawling at the eulogy. Sheriff Walt talks with Frank. The FBI is going to investigate the suspicious deaths. The arteries are clear of the victims. It’s like the life is crushed out of them. Frank leaves. Lucy stops Frank, she believes in his abilities. Frank is real quiet, tells her that Ray loves her.

That night, at a local restaurant, Frank and Lucy are having dinner. Ray is along, too. Frank was an architect until a car accident endowed him with the ability to see and hear ghosts. Lucy wasn’t very happy with her marriage to Ray, gotten awfully rocky. Ray is mad that Frank isn’t trying to help him more with Lucy. “Dude, you’re a ghost and she’s hot chick that needs Marty McFly lovin' sooner than later.”

Frank spots another guy with a number on his forehead. Thing is crawling behind the wall. Guy is disturbed by Frank. Thing gets the guy and leaves. The guy becomes a ghost when a tunnel appears taking him to the afterlife. Frank leaves the restaurant following the Thing.

Frank killed her and carved the number 13 into her forehead.

Frank shows up at the police department. Milton has him arrested. Lucy thinks Frank is innocent. He tells her he doesn’t care as Lucy leaves.

Milton forces the Sheriff to leave and begins questioning Frank. He rants about how a woman who can stop a frog’s heart. Frank tells him about Grim Reaper and seeing spirits. Milton doesn’t believe him, accusing Frank of murdering his wife. Suddenly, Milton thinks that Frank is about to stop his heart. But, Milton is safe because of his lead chest plate to protect his heart.

What I say:

Excuse me for this movie. One of the big concepts behind this site is trying to avoid movies that other sites have reviewed. Well, I'm going to get some of these other movies some times. But, I'm trying to avoid the big movies like Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles. So, most Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson movies are not going to be reviewed on sideorderofninjas. But, the Frighteners, I think is probably the second most ignored Peter Jackson movie. B-movie reviewers may on the whole consider Peter Jackson a great director. But, Heavenly Creatures is quite a different pill than any other of his movies.

But, the Frighteners was the first American movie before the Lord of the Ring trilogy. I dare anyone to watch this movie and not think that this was the movie before Lord of the Ring: Fellowship of the Ring. Granted it's a 5 year gap. But to go from here to there in such a short time is impressive. Even more than that, I figure that being after the Oscars I should at least mention Peter Jackson's win for Best Director and for Lord of the Ring: Return of the King. I hadn't originally thought anything about posting my review of Frighteners the week after of the Oscars. But, it just seems like good timing.

Frighteners unfortunately tanked in the theater in 1996. Don’t remember it in the theater. That might sound like funny. But, I remember when I was going to see Highlander 3. However, the theater couldn’t get it and had to watch Legends of the Fall, instead. Better than that, my cousin wanted see to Disclosure as if it were the greatest movie of all time. A side note about Highlander 3: I still haven't gotten around to watching it.

I had heard of Peter Jackson by 1996. I think the only movie of his I’d seen at this point was zombie-fest Dead Alive. Had heard of the infamous Bad Taste and even Meet the Feebles. But was years before I would view these masterpieces,it would take the DVDs before I got to watch them. May not have been the sideorderofninjas that I am today. But, I at least have a little old-skool ninja-like street-cred. May not be like an evil ninja possessing a break dancer's ninja-cred. But who could have that much ninja-cred? How could I not have made a reference to Ninja 3: the Domination. "Not I said the fish, not I..."

Frighteners suffers from a case of middle child syndrome. Think about it. Peter Jackson's first 3 movies: Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, Dead Alive. He did direct Heavenly Creatures before this one. And, then he went on to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Frighteners doesn't have the air of manicalness of Bad Taste, the wicked sense of humor of Meet the Feebles, or the Kung Fu priest of Dead Alive.

Marty McFly as a Ghostbuster happens to scream B-movie to me...On with what I say....I could picture Bill Murray's character Peter Venkeman using ghosts to haunt places and charge to remove them if he could communicate with them.

Jeffrey Combs has to be one of the most widely recognized B-movie characters around. I'd think Bruce Campbell would be more widely known. Bruce may at least have a more of a typical leading man appearance. Jeffrey Combs is like Phil Hartman back in his Saturday Night Live days as the guy who would appear as anyone. Compare Jeffrey Combs in Frighteners and from Fortress. You wouldn't think it is the same guy. In fact, I never realized he was Weyoun in Star Trek: Deep Space 9, either. Jeffrey Combs definitely hams it up as Milton Dammers. A guy that makes Fox Mulder normal and uber-cool, too.

Let me discuss one of the main problems with the Frighteners. Milton Dammers, it is never decided if he's just a nerdy paranoid Mulder-type or malevolent guy who would do anything to get Frank. If they would have kept to either a paranoid guy or other, it would make a lot more sense. Something else bothers me, Dammers is a paranormal investigator who has a lot of experience with unexplained phenomena. Why can't he even consider Frank's story? Thinking the black robed thing is Frank's excuse to blame the murders on. That sounds like psychological reason. Near the end where Dammers catches the urn of Johnny's ashes, he spills them so Frank will have to face the truth he is the killer. The logical thing would be to let Frank take the urn to the chapel. I'm not even considering the putting the ghost to rest. If someone believes something so much, letting him complete the task would make him a lot easier to capture afterwards.

Trini Alvarado actually plays a woman who isn’t always screaming to be saved. That is something we don’t see in many movies. Granted, she just seemed to beat the living fire out of Jeffrey Combs, which is still an accomplishment. She doesn’t break the border of “attainable hotness.” It is a little funny dead husband and one dinner date later; she’s hopelessly in love with Michael J. Fox. That is stretching belief a little too much. Maybe having her trying to find out what killed her husband with Frank’s aid would be more believable. But, with Peter Jackson movies, I’m not big into reality.

I thought the R. Lee Ermey cameo was fantastic. It is implied it isn’t the same character from Full Metal Jacket. But, an insane drill instructor by any other name is R. Lee Ermey…We know the truth is out there. Put him in any military role and he becomes known as the guy Private Pyle unloaded into during basic training.

Dee Wallace Stone there’s no way I would have recognized her in this movie. She’s better known as Elliot’s mom from E.T. or in genre movies as from Joe Dante’s The Howling. This was probably one of her first movies since her husband Christopher Stone died the previous year. She can play a very psychotic woman with gusto. And, if it wasn't acting skill, excuse while I check my door to make sure it's locked...

Jake Busey, son of Gary, will probably never be an A-list star. But here’s hoping he reaches a higher pinnacle than Joe Estevez, brother of Martin Sheen. Johnny Bartlett is the serial killer who doesn’t want to stop even after dying, determined to achieve the apex of his craft. Granted, most of the time, he appears as a ghost. But, his presence during the asylum shootout is unnerving. We never seem to get any idea of why he did it other than a doctor calling him a moron. But, that’s not the reason. The closest reason is he wanted the highest kill record. In a way, that’s more frightening than being told to kill by a dog, etc…

Near the end, where Frank is seeing the massacre at the asylum would be almost unfilmable today with the number of school shootings, over the past several years. Can't have anything like that in a movie nowadays. Has there been any kind of realistic shootings like this in any movies in the past few years? I can't think of any... Not counting action movies. But, it seems more horrific by being more realistic. A slow-mo shooting while we get blaring techno music is more like an action adventure video from the Matrix.

Think about how Japan is becoming a better country for horror movies that push the bar. Large number of suicides, high school classes battling to the death. Ringu, Suicide Club. Technically Battle Royale wouldn't be considered a horror movie. But, no way could it be made in the US. I know the manga novelization has been released. But, I'm not sure if the DVD has even been officially released or if it is a bootleg.

I think they could have done more with John Astin’s character, Judge. Stuart and Cyrus were quickly whacked so Frank would have to fight the Reaper on his own. Actually, the way, Stuart and especially Cyrus would argue with Frank gave a lot of the comedy to the movie. Cyrus complaining about wearing the leisure suit he died wearing in 1975, was funny. Granted, the ghosts could have easily slipped into the land of odious comedic sidekicks.

Jackson can inject humor into horror like few directors besides Raimi. Near, the end, they pretty much dropped almost every bit of the humor for horror. We get the feeling of something sinister in the background for the first 45 minutes before it really starts kicking into high gear. I’d think this movie has hardly any gore, granted Dead Alive brought splatterstick to a new level. For the first widely release picture of Peter Jackson, it is a good debut that far too many people haven’t seen.
