What the box says:

In the dusty heart of the American southwest, innocent country boy Caleb Cotton (Adrian Pasdar of MYSTERIOUS WAYS) is seduced by a beautiful girl (Jenny Wright) into joining a roving pack of vicious drifters led by the enigmatic Jesse (Lance Henriksen of THE TERMINATOR and ALIENS). But this is no ordinary band of outlaws; Caleb is now trapped in a nightmare of soulless evil that waits in the shadows, hellish mayhem that thrives on blood and absolute horror that begins NEAR DARK.

Bill Paxton (TWISTER) and Jenette Goldstein(Aliens) co-star in this extraordianry shocker co-written and directed by Kathryn Bigelow (STRANGE DAYS) that Entertainment Weekly calls "ultrstylish, ultraviolent, and altogether brilliant." This is more than simply the most ferociously original vampire movie of our generation; NEAR DARK is one of the best horror movies of all time.

Plot:

A mosquito is swatted by Caleb, our resident local goat roper. The sun’s going down, so he’s off to town to cruise. Caleb and his pals spot the uber-hot Mae sucking on an ice cream cone. Caleb tries hitting on her. Several lame pick up lines later, he’ll take her to trailer park.

Hi, I'm Mae, I'll be the cause of your vampirificiation tonight...

He drives her back and along the way they have a conversation. Mae is distant and really philosophical. Caleb keeps trying his Rico Suavay routine. Mae is talking about how long light travels from the stars to get to Earth, she’ll still be around. Caleb is still after her. You’d think being that spacey would creep out a normal guy even with the uber-hot may. But, with him being a cow short of a stampede, he doesn’t think anything about it.

They keep on trucking. Caleb wants her to meet his horse. The horse senses evil and runs away. Caleb tries kissing her. She wants to get home before dawn, very adamant about it. He keeps driving on…

Caleb stops the truck until Mae kisses him. Mae does, slowly moves on to his neck, going for the bite. She heads running for home. Caleb heads home when the truck breaks down. He stumbles home as the sunlight beats on him, starts to smoke.

Sarah, Caleb’s little sister, is helping Loy, dad. She spots Caleb collapsing in a field.

An ominous RV rushes by grabbing Caleb. It drives away, the windows are blacked out. Sarah and Loy see Caleb snatched. In the trailer, Severen is going to kill Caleb: Jesses gives the ok. Mae reveals Caleb was bit not bled. Severen is really pissed. By now, Caleb has turned. Jesse has new orders to see if Caleb can be one of them. He has no idea what’s going on at this point.

The RV pulls into a garage, everybody tucks in for some shuteye. Mae nestles in with Caleb.

Loy reports Caleb’s kidnapping to the sheriff.

That night, Mae claims she’ll teach Caleb. The 12 year old looking Homer converted Mae. Imagine a 12 year old male version of Claudia from Interview With the Vampire, that be pretty close to Homer. Jesse will give Caleb a week to see if he fits in or not. Caleb is still not told what is going on. He meets the rest of the gang: Homer, Severen, Diamondback, Jesse. The RV pulls out into the night.

Severen steals new vehicle. They burn the RV and use the new rig. Homer takes his bike with him. Caleb goes with Mae. He doesn’t feel good, not knowing what’s going on, and wants to go home and leave.

Caleb staggers into town. Nice inside joke of seeing a marquee of Aliens in the background. Finds the bus station, he’s shy of the bus fare. Cop checks Caleb out and gives him the couple of extra bucks he needs to get back home.

On the bus, Caleb is as sick as a dog. He manages to get where the rig is parked and Mae is waiting. She bites her wrist open and offers it to him. Caleb isn’t shy about drinking it. Why do we get some subtle sexual overtones at this point? Caleb is better now. They run off into the night hand and hand.

Loy checks on Sarah. They talk with the sheriff. Police found a burnt RV. Sheriff claims Caleb fell in with a bad crowd. Loy and Sarah will search for Caleb themselves.

That night, Caleb tries calling home. Mae wants Caleb to accept how things are. He must learn to kill to survive. She talks about using instincts.

Trucker sees and rushes to check on Homer collapsed on the road with his bike overturned. Well, Homer has his dinner.

Severen is doing a quick draw, hitchhiking. He gets picked up by a couple of girls.

Jesse and Diamondback are reminiscing about how Jesse turned her. They pull over for a hitchhiker, who pulls a gun on them. A second guy has gun at Jesse’s head. Jesse has a big grin on his face. Somebody’s going to have dinner tonight.

Mae and Caleb are riding with a friendly trucker. Mae wants Caleb to kill. Caleb looks sick, needing blood. The trucker sees that Caleb has this strange look on his face, stops the truck. Caleb jumps out and the Trucker checks on him. Mae is behind the Trucker and taps the vein. She lets Caleb feed from her wrist again. In the background, oil derricks are pumping, more sexual overtones. Mae has to pull away to keep from Caleb from taking too much blood.

Loy and Sarah are in a diner, call the sheriff. They learn that Caleb was at a bus station heading for home but got off the bus. Loy decides to switch directions on the search.

In a train car, Mae pleads to give Caleb more time. Jesse states Caleb will kill tonight or die.

Redneck Children of the Night.
They head for a bar. Caleb and Severen belly up to the bar. Severen spills a guy’s drink. Picking a fight with him.

Mae, Homer, Jesse, and Diamondback are at a booth.

Severen keeps insulting the bartender. Severen then spits a drink into the guy he was aggravating earlier. Severn holds Caleb for the guy to hit. Caleb fights the guy and realizes he’s stronger now.

The waitress brings a drink for Jesse. Diamondback slits her throat catches the blood in the mug. Bartender is fairly disturbed by watching this. Severen is acting more manic than normal. He sets his sights on the biker in the bar. The Bartender is loading his sawed-off shotgun.

Severen snaps the biker’s neck and takes a drink. Jesse is watching all of this. Caleb takes a shotgun blast to the chest from the Bartender. Severen sits Caleb down and will take care of things. A slashed throat later, the bartender won’t be shooting any more vampires.

Homer shoots the guy Severn was picking the fight with earlier. Jesse motions for Mae to swing into action. She makes the guy dance with her. He’s terrified. This is Caleb’s kill. Terrified guy jumps out the window to escape. Caleb is in hot pursuit.

The rest of the gang sets the bar on fire. Jesse finds a new van for them. Caleb catches up with Terrified guy who pleads for his life. Caleb lets him go. Van pulls up; everyone is starting to darken the windows. They’ll take care of Caleb later. Terrified guy will report them to the cops. They don’t have a hiding place set up. The cops will be looking for them. Needless to say, Jesse is as pissed as Lance Henriksen after Millennium was cancelled.

They pull into a motel right before sunup. Jesse rents a hut seeing the sun creeping up in the sky. The old manager seems to remember Jesse from many years ago. Jesse grabs the key and leaves. Later, everyone is resting in the room, awakened by a knock on the door. It’s the fuzz. Severen opens fire

Shot through the heart and you're to blame

Jesse and the rest are packing guns. The cops call for their surrender. The gunfight begins in earnest. Each bullet hole lets more sunlight into the room. They need to get to the van. Caleb rushes to the van. Wrapped in a blanket, shot repeatedly, Caleb begins to catch fire. He drives the van crashing through the hut wall. The rest pile in the van and drive off. Right now, all are happy with Caleb.

That night, they check into another motel. Severen gives Caleb a spur, big bonding moment. Caleb has earned some time. Caleb asks how old Jesse is. Jesse fought for the South and lost. Jesse and Severen are loading guns. Mae and Caleb head out. This is a touching moment.

Jesse, Homer, Diamondback, and Severen are playing poker. Homer heads out to smoke, spotting Sarah. Homer offers to let her watch television in his room. Severen is going to get Loy. Sarah is about to leave their room when Mae and Caleb return. Everyone learns that Sarah is Caleb’s sister. Severen arrives with Loy.

Caleb wants Sarah and Loy released. Homer wants Sarah, threatens to convert her. Jesses wants Loy and Sarah dead. Loy pulls a gun on Severen. Caleb tries warning him not to fire. Loy shoots Jesse. Sarah rushes for the door, sunlight incapacitates them. Loy, Sarah, and Caleb escape.

Loy wants to know what’s happened to Caleb who refuses to go to the hospital, wants to go home instead. Somehow, Caleb has the idea to get a transfusion. At home, Loy transfuses his blood into Caleb. Loy doesn’t know if it worked or not, keeping a vigil over his son.

Next day, Sarah comes in, sunlight falling on Caleb, who isn’t burning. He’s human again.

Sarah and Caleb are spending time with each other again. They have a typical family dinner. Caleb goes to check on something outside. Mae is waiting and, they embrace. She feels he’s human again and leaves.

Later, Loy is sleeping on the couch. Caleb finds Sarah is gone from her room. He rides his horse into town. Severen tosses Caleb around. Caleb runs to a truck; Severen shoots the driver. Caleb climbs behind the wheel, runs over Severen. Thinking it’s over, he sees the bloody Severen climbing the hood of the 18-wheeler. Caleb jackknifes the truck, and jumps. The end result is a barbecued Severen.

He sees Jesse and Mae, Homer has Sarah. Diamondback is behind Caleb. Jesses keeps Mae from warning Caleb. Diamondback is about to throw the knife in Caleb’s back. Sarah warns Caleb who ducks. The knife lands in Jesse’s mouth. Diamondback lets Caleb run for it.

Jesse tries shooting Caleb which Mae deflects the shot. They all get in the station wagon.

Caleb is running home. Jesse and his crew are in hot pursuit…Sarah is grabbed again.

The next day, Mae awakens human. She got a transfusion. Caleb gave her some of his blood. They embrace. Mae is frightened at being human again. The movie ends.

What I say:

Can I call this a vampire movie? The “V” word is never used in this movie. Vampires seem to bring out the pale people in too much eyeliner claiming to be gothic vampires. Well, Lord Lestat Darque Fang, this is the world’s first Redneck Vampire movie. They don’t act all gothy or angsty, bemoaning their fate to wander in the dark and to survive by ending the lives of others. These are "vampires" that just drive around in large gas guzzling vehicles and randomly drain a few pints from people in Mason jars. Well, can't you picture a redneck vampire drinking from a Mason jar?

This is most definitely a vampire movie that cuts the vampire mythology to the bone. None of the “vampires” have fangs. They bite with human teeth, if not using knives, etc…They aren’t too proud to let the lead fly either. The only weaknesses they seem to have is sunlight or if they don’t feed regular enough.

How can you see the bar scene and not think From Dusk to Dawn ripped it off? Well, Tarantino has a habit of ripping scenes off from other movies. The opening Bible scripture from Bodyguard was Samuel L. Jackson's quote in Pulp Fiction. Ear cutting scene from Django was in Reservoir Dogs. Granted, any man that can write a screenplay and have it on film where a bikini clad Salma Hayak dances around him deserves some respect...

Lost Boys came out about the same time as Near Dark. And, Schumacher’s movie is remembered along with multiple Coreys in it. It does have some visual style to it. Visual style, the movie plays like a MTV music video. But, Near Dark is more than just flashy camera angles and a soundtrack.

The 1980s weren’t that good to the vampire genre. A couple of vampire spoofs, Love at First Bite and Once Bitten were made. Hunger, Lost Boys, and I can’t think of any more off the top of my head. The vampire genre began picking up steam in the 90s. At the end of the 90s, Blade gave a new revitalized image to vampire genre.

Jesse and the rest of them have an interesting dynamic to the "family." Jesse was converted during the Civil War. A few years after this, he converted Severen before 1871, the Chicago fire reference. Decades later, Jesse turned Diamondback, the DVD documentary reveals a lot of this, in near the Dust Bowl or Great Depression. Obviously, Diamondback is the matriach of this clan, In the 1950s, Diamondback wanting a child has Homer converted. You can see the way she watches over him, motherly. Later, Homer converted Mae right after she graduated high school, 4 years before she met Caleb. So, we have Jesse the patriarch. Severen as the crazy kid brother of Jesse. In other words, Severen is the crazy uncle. Diamonback as the mother. Homer is the child. Mae would have to be the daughter. Homer is growing jealous after Mae turns Caleb, losing his sister to a boyfriend. That is probably part of why he wanted to turn Sarah so badly. Then, he'd be needed by her.

This movie can't be described without mentioning Aliens. 3 of the stars of this movie are in it: Lance Henriksen, Jeanette Goldstein, and Bill Paxton. In fact, one scene in the movie we see a movie theater marquee showing Aliens. With them just being in another movie, they have a feeling of unity that really shows how they gel together.

Manic Bill Paxton, too bad he didn't show 1/8 of the charisma from here in Twister. He puts enough energy in Severen to power a house. In the documentary on the DVD, we learn he got a Vitamin B-12 shot right before the Bar Scene. Paxton acts almost like he's off his rocker as he did as Hudson in Aliens. Are his only good movies when he's acting like he's crackers?

Jenny Wright managed to inject a lot of vulnerability into Mae and has a sexy way of eating an ice cream cone. That is a very important talent. It's a shame she never was in more than a couple of other movies before she quit acting like I, Madman.

Adrian Pasdar comes across as a confused goat roper. I refuse to call him a cowboy, at least he didn't using his skills with a rope in the final battle. He is probably the weakest actor in the movie. The horn-dog goat-roper on the prowl who becomes the sickly-looking guy before turning into a vampire.

Jenette Goldstein just doesn't seem to have much to do in this movie. They just never focused on her to give Diamondback any personality. I'm not sure why she let Caleb escape before the car chase. Well, she looks a lot more feminine that her role as the butch-looking Vasquez from Aliens.

Lance Henriksen just has a presence about him. Who said "Lance Henriksen can inject intensity into a potato chip commercial"? That is probably the best way to describe him. He was determined to get into the role of Jesse. That documentary on the DVD, he had devised how Jesse was originally turned. He was in the Confederate Navy when he was turned. This guy tries to live his characters however much that scares the rest of the world. There a great story of how he was dressed as Jesse and picked up a hitch-hiker. Last Samurai is probably the worst Lance Henriksen performance. And what is so bad is he can almost elevate any movie.

The biggest flaw through the movie seems to be the passage of time. Night ends awfully quickly. The bar massacre ends, and they need to get to cover for the sun is coming up. You'd think people that do a decent Human torch impression with sunlight would pay better attention to the time of sunrise. If you don't think about it much, it isn't going to bother you like some movies do. I was watching Die Hard in my dorm room a few years ago. My roommate came in around an hour oor so into it. 2 nights later, he asks me why Bruce Willis was running around barefooted. Granted, it is explained earlier in the movie. But, for a question like that to fester in your mind for days before asking it is something else.

I had heard stories about Near Dark for years. It’s supposed to be one of the more original vampire movies out there. Well, various problems kept me from watching it until Anchor Bay released the DVD version of it. There was only one VHS version that went out of print in the mid 90s. And when you live in a small town, you don't have much hope to have it in stock in the local video store. But, with the DVD revolution and coupled with the explosion of the internet, too, there's no excuse to keep from hearing about this movie. More than that, there's no excuse from watching one of the greatest vampires movies of the last 20 years.
