Plot:
Warning: the following review contains gratitious use of the word ' mitochondria' for the easily confused.
In the suburbs, Kiyomi is putting out the clothes to dry.
At a college lecture, Dr. Nagashima is lecturing about cells and going into the components discusses the mitochondria. At one point they were parasites. However they now
have a symbiotic relationship with human cells.
At a nearby school, at the pool, Mariko falls in the pool.
Nagashima is lecturing how mitochondria come through mothers. He discusses how the first woman passed mitochondria: Mitochondria Eve.
Doctor (I never caught his name) checks in on Mariko. She needs dialysis 3 times a week but is sick of doing it.
Asukura is having a science lecture with a group of grade school kids. They don’t seem to be interested in germs, etc. She is able to explain parasites and germs using a snail
before the fiercest hawk flies by and tears the snail to shreds and flies away.
Nagashima is still lecturing on how mitochondria became part of cells. He theorizes that new mitochondria could repair damaged or diseased cells. As everyone leaves, he
spots Kiyomi.
He is close to a breakthrough in his work and even forgot his first anniversary. He’ll be home as soon as he can, and Kiyomi starts to drive home.
At the lab, science ensues. Nagashima discusses with Asukura could mitochondria take over a body.
Kiyomi is getting dizzy while driving.

Yes, she's driving a without a car. She never told me she was a mime.
She rear ends a truck. If that wasn’t bad enough, a steel girder slides off the back and hits her in the head.
Nagashima gets to the scene of the accident.
At the hospital, Kiyomi is in surgery. The prognosis doesn’t look good. The surgeon explains she is on a respirator and brain dead.
He is in her room remembering about their wedding.
The next day Kiyomi’s dad and Nagashima are in her room. The hospital organ donation officer talks with Nagashima about how his wife was signed as a kidney organ
donor. Dad wants his daughter’s wishes respected.
That night, Nagashima finds the anniversary cake Kiyomi fixed.
Hospital organ donor lady is looking for a recipient and has found a perfect match. However, the family hasn’t signed the papers yet.
Organ lady keeps hitting Nagashima up to sign the papers. Other Doctor tells how the previous kidney was rejected and pleads for him to sign. Nagashima won’t because
he knows Kiyomi is still alive.
A stormy night, Nagashima breaks down crying in his lab. Awakening the next morning, he has an epiphany about liver cell cultures.
Nagashima talks with Other Doctor. He agrees to sign on one condition if he is given Kiyomi’s liver. When pressed, he ignores the questions of what he would do with it.
Mariko is on dialysis. Other Doctor tells her about the kidney.
At the hospital, Kiyomi is taken off the respirator. Organ removal fu ensues.
Nagashima has a flashback to the Christmas party where he met Kiyomi. He opens the anniversary present and is the ugliest tie this side of a polyester tie from the mid 70s.
Other Doctor takes out the kidney. He gives the kidney to Nagashima.
Other Doctor heads to the hospital for Mariko’s transplant.
Nagashima gets aback to his lab and begins working. He runs out Asukura and continues with his project.
Other Doctor’s kidney surgery is interposed with Nagashima’s liver work as filtering and extracting ensues.
Mariko’s dad learns that the surgery went well.
As Asukura is leaving, she realizes that Nagashima is still working. The liver cells are replicating. He is sure that those cells mean Kiyomi is still alive.
The next day, Mariko is still at the hospital but playing and happy. Later, in the children’s ward, Mariko and cat-masked kid are staying.

Catman as a child had numerous issues.
She starts to hear the water dripping and gets scared. Other Doctor checks on her. Mariko pleads for the kidney to be taken out.
Mariko is on oxygen.
Nagashima is wearing his awful-polyester tie and checks on the liver cultures.
Other Doctor has run test on Mariko’s kidney and finds the mitochondria (almost forgot I was going to use the word) 3 times as large as they should be and are replicating
faster, too. An intern asks what Nagashima did with the kidney.
Nagashima is hard at work and sees the cells multiplying exponentially. Suddenly, he sees Kiyomi in the sample.

Ghost in the Cell...Didn't say Ghost in the Shell...
Asukura tries talking with him. However, he blows her off.
Other Doctor tries to talk with Nagashima but is ignored. He rants about how Kiyomi is alive by culturing the cells. Apparently, each cell is his wife.
Asukura is working on her paper when hearing a noise. She checks Nagashima’s private lab. His project notes mention that Kiyomi has spoken to him. Several of the culture
jars have been broken. Asukura touches the slimy residue.
Something is in the overhead ventilation system. A cheap scare ensues with a white mouse. She doesn’t see the green slime oozing overhead or the single drop that falls on
her ear and takes over her body.
Nagashima finds his lab ransacked. He tries to save some of the mitochondrial goo. He sees the Green Slime fuse and impersonate the face morphing aliens from
the Abyss. The goo eventually morphs into a naked Kiyomi without nipples.
Naked Kiyomi is able to convince him that everything is fine. Well, let the lovin’ begin…Nagashima seems to enjoy himself as he is covered in gelatinous goo.
He awakens beside her. Naked Kiyomi begins to peel and melt away.
Nagashima heads to the house and discovers Kiyomi’s secret diary that tells of how she was drawn to him and his work by a voice. He remembers how Naked Kiyomi tells
him how he was chosen to release the mitochondria and how the organelles forced Kiyomi to talk with him the first time.
Nagashima has to destroy the work in his lab because all mad scientists must destroy part of a lab in every movie.
Wandering around later, Nagashima runs into Asukura who is acting awfully strange.
He follows her to the science conference where she’ll present her paper.
Other Doctor is there trying to talk with Nagashima. Mariko has undergone several strange changes including the uterus.
Asukura is at the podium. Mitochondria will be free. They have provided energy for humans since the time of Mitochondria Eve. One man tries to get her away from the
podium and is set on digital fire for his trouble. Mitochondria have enough energy to cook any person. They have waited, but the time to replace humanity has arrived. A womb
has been chosen for their purposes. The descendents will be the perfect life form. Humanity will be destroyed.
Everyone runs out of the conference as Asukura collapses. Other Doctor realizes that Mariko has been chosen to conceive the child.
At the hospital, Mariko is screaming and convulsing. Bladders are inflating in out tribute to David Cronenberg.
Nagashima, Asukura, and Other Doctor realize the mitochondria planned everything.
Almost Exorcist-like bed bouncing ensues.
Our heroes are unaware that the goo is on the undercarriage of the car. Somehow, Asukura realizes that the mitochondria are at the hospital.
Mariko quits fighting. She senses the mitochondria are close as the goo oozes from the sink
Nagashima and the Other Doctor rush in to find Naked Kiyomi holding Mariko. Nagashima isn’t able to convince Naked Kiyomi to let Mariko go. A nurse is set on digital
fire. As our heroes put her out, Naked Kiyomi glides away. She doesn’t walk but floats off.
They try to search the hospital. Naked Kiyomi apparently enjoys randomly setting people on fire through her pyrokinesis.
Other Doctor gets to the computer control room.
Naked Kiyomi gliding continues.
Other Doctor is able to use the video cameras to track Naked Kiyomi. He is able to see her in a hallway.
Nagashima and Asukura are almost trapped by the hospital blast doors.
Other Doctor hears Mariko and sees the Naked Kiyomi is talking with the girl’s voice. The computer system suddenly explodes. Nagashima and Asukura find the scorched
Other Doctor.
They realize that Naked Kiyomi is heading for the roof.
Naked Kiyomi will apparently use Nagashima’s love gravy from their last tryst to use to conceive a child and have Mariko carry it.
Nagashima arrives and asks her to let Mariko go. He is told not to interfere. Mariko will give birth to the real Mitochondria Eve.
The mitochondria caused Kiyomi to crash her car. They knew Nagashima would harvest the liver cells. The womb was planned, too.
Naked Kiyomi starts to glide away. Nagashima is distraught from being used. However, he was in love with Kiyomi before the party where they met. Naked Kiyomi stops and
claims Kiyomi was created to make him love her.
Crying Nagashima ensues. Naked Kiyomi warns him to stay away. She sets him on digital fire. He wants her to join him and keeps walking to her.
Other Doctor and Asukura watch from a distance.
Naked Kiyomi lets Mariko go.
Somehow, the real Kiyomi’s personality is controlling the body. Suckin’ face ensues as Kiyomi and Nagashima are engulfed in flame.
Mariko awakens and is told everything was dream.
Asukura staggers away and breaks down.
“Burning For You” by the Blue Oyster Cult ensues for our flame wrapped couple.
The anniversary cake’s candle is lit.
A flashback shows the first time Nagashima saw Kiyomi. He watches her from a distance and turns away and didn’t notice that she watched him. The Christmas party is shown
and the credits finally roll.
