I mentioned these a while ago and, finally, they've arrived: zoogz rift's sci-releases. to be quite honest, four of these are slightly enhanced: the original sci cdrs do/did have some 'problems' like wrong or mislabeled tracks, some bad cut & paste jobs, fade in/out problems, etc. so the package that I received included four 'enhanced / corrected versions'. no, not done by zoogz. but anyway, they sound great:
* zoogz rift: bohemian buddha
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records)
the latest album by zoogz.
* zoogz rift: benefit
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records sci 029) - cover art by cal
schenkel
recorded may 30, 1999 during a zoogz benefit concert. at the end of
the evening zoogz joined the amazing shitheads on stage.
* zoogz rift: duets
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records)
previously released on tape in 1994 on zoogz his kotp-label. duets with
frank sinatra.
* zoogz rift: can you smell my genitals from where you're standing?
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records)
originally recorded in 1982 - 1983 and previously released in 1994
on tape on zoogz's king of the pacific label. music for solo casio & solo
electronic drums.
* zoogz rift: die, you cretinous bastards!
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records)
this is another project that was previously available on tape only
(1994, kotp kc-1001). it contains fragments of two concerts: 1990/05/22
darmstadt, germany + 1986/05/10 hollywood, usa.
* zoogz rift: fuck god, fuck your mother, fuck all your bullshit, and fuck
you
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records)
previously out on k7 as well (1994, kotp kc-1004), includes parts of
different concerts: 1989/07/22 los angeles, usa + 1989/07/08 san francisco,
usa + 1986/01/ los angeles, usa.
* zoogz rift : sanitized for your protection
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records)
lots of great tunes covered by zoogz & his amazing shitheads. big
fun.
* zoogz rift: none of your damn business
(1999, cdr, usa, sci records)
works in progress, 1995-1999.
* zoogz rift : united we fall
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records)
recorded around 1989, this album consists of three improvisations
and one 'bonus' track: high fidelity (elvis costello).
* zoogz rift : the transients bootleg
(1999, cdr, usa, sci records)
zoogz goes residents.
* zoogz rift: son of puke
(1999, cdr, usa, sci records)
chronologically speaking, this is zoogz rift album number eight. released
in 1987 on tape on the late sst label.
* zoogz rift: war zone
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records)
who remembers tom & slev's new masters? war zone was released in
1992 on tape on tom & slev's new masters (green 02). and now, finally, on
cdr.
* zoogz rift: music sucks
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records)
rare works, recorded 1976 through 1983. released in 1994 (on tape) on
zoogz's own kotp-label. (kc-1002)
* zoogz rift: electroaquaticities 1972-1977
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records)
the 1994 kotp release.
* zoogz rift: with no apparent reason
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records)
recordings, rehearsals & concerts, released in 1994 as kotp kc-1011. is
this the unreleased album from 1977?
* zoogz rift: school of the criminally insane
(1999, cdr, usa, sci records)
here's another 'new' album. featuring arthur barrow !
* zoogz rift: europe 1990
(2000, cdr, usa, sci records)
released in 1990 as an lp on the german musical tragedies label (mt-108).
yes, that's a whole lotta zoogz. personally, I'm very fond of the idea of artists creating their own label and putting out their own material - even if it's on cdr. of course, this does leave the door open for 'hasty' and 'sloppy' jobs. a couple of zoogz's cdrs might have needed a bit more work & attention before they were released. still, it's a great package & a great opportunity to get hold of some fine music.
and there's even more:
* carmine appice: guitar zeus 2
(1997, cd, jpn, polydor pocp-7251)
guitar zeus is a project by carmine appice. carmine plays drums,
kelly keeling vocals, rhythm guitar & keyboards & tony franklin bass.
subtitled 'channel mind radio', this second guitar zeus album brings 14
sessions, each with a different guitar player. among them: zakk wylde,
warren demartini, richie sambora, ted nugent & dweezil zappa. The dweezil
zappa piece is called 'dead wrong' and he plays lead on it.
this japanese version has two extra tracks.
* mauro : a faint smile
(2000, cd5", bel, pias recordings / sony atv piasb 017cd)
mauro pawlowski is back. the guy behind the evil superstars is
recording a solo album. release is scheduled somewhere next year. this cd
single should give an impression of what he's up to. essential weirdness.
and while we're on the subject, here's a couple of evil promos that I recently learned about:
* evil superstars: it's a sad sad planet
(1998, cd5"-pro, uk, paradox pdoxo19ref)
* evil superstars: it's a sad sad planet
(1998, 10"-pro, uk, paradox pdoxo19dj) - a one-sided 10"
* evil superstars: baby
(1998, cd5"-pro, uk, paradox pdoxo17ref)
4 tracks: b.a.b.y., x-masless forever, failure machine, (we want)
the new pain
* evil superstars: baby
(1998, 10"-pro, uk, paradox pdoxo17dj) - a one-sided 10"
* the grandmothers: eating the astoria
(2000, cd, ??, obvious music om gm0100)
recorded live at the london astoria, march 13, 1998. andy
greenaway's review of this very concert
http://www.idiotbastard.supanet.com/you-call-that-news-/odyframe.htm
had made me very curious, and I wasn't the least dissapointed. this is a
superb album, featuring jimmy carl black, bunk gardner, sandro oliva, ener
bladezipper, mauro andreoni & steve roney... (no don preston this time, but
that's another story) oh, how I love my mothers.
we are the grandmothers, peaches en regalia, mj, teen-a-peek, the big chaos,
call any vegetable, invocation and ritual dance of the young pumpkin,
sleeping in a jar, whoo uh, lady queen bee, love of my life, hungry freaks
daddy, the great white buffalo, big leg emma, brown shoes don't make it,
junk food, mr.green genes, uncle meat, oh no, the orange county lumber
truck, trail of tears.
the mothers are still touring the usa. try to catch them !
* var.art.: ozzfest doggy bag - second helping
(1999, cd-pro, usa, sony esk 42084)
i don't really know what this is. it must be some kind of promo
dittie that was handed out at an ozzy osbourne concert or tribute or
something like that. it presents a lot of bands that I'd never heard of,
but also steve vai with 'jibboom - rough mix'.
* brian locklin & john french: runaway mind train
(1998, cd, usa, triangle mallet apron records tma cd 01)
I had heard of this one before, but I had never actually seen it,
let alone listened to it. it's a nice album. it has a couple of pieces by
lockin & french as a duo; two pieces by locklin, french and laird (they
perform as triangle mallet apron !); and the rest of the pieces are solo
things or recordings with other people. It's sort of an overview of what
they've been up to the last 15 years or so. I like the idea (and the album
as well).
locklin and french also collaborated with michael larid on his soundtrack
contributions to the film 'slacker', from 1989.
various greek magazines have had a zappa and / or residents track on the cd
that they included: zoo magazine, audio magazine, new rock - sound therapy.
here's some of them:
* frank zappa : frank's wildest years
(1998, cd-pro, gr, zoo magazine zoo ep 13)
an all zappa promo that came with zoo magazine; including:
peaches en regalia, willie the pimp, dirty love, fifty-fifty.
beautiful package and all !
* var.art.: audio cd-19
(1996, cd, gr, audio magazine cd-19)
given free with the april 1996 issue of audio magazine; inlcuding
frank zappa:'I don't wanna get drafted'.
* var.art.: audio cd-22
(1996, cd, gr, audio magazine cd-22)

mothers of invention: 'any way the wind blows' & the residents: 'dagmar, the
dog woman'.

* eugene chadbourne: young and innocent days
(2000, 2x10", ger, swamp room records 301135) - ltd edition
of 1000 copies
in 1989 eugene chadbourne released camper van chadbourne, together
with his pal camper van beethoven. the album contained their 'zappa
medley'. it was the first time I heard him play zappa. in the early
ninetees, I saw him perform with jimmy carl black a couple of times with
"the jack and jim show"; weirdness all over. dr.chadbourne released a lot
of tapes with recordings from this period. in 1995 he released two albums
with jimmy carl black. they both contained a lot of zappa material. 1997
he released 'psychad', another album that featured jimmy carl black and on
which they played 'how can I be such a fool'. this one was on swamp room
records. and now there's 'young and innocent days', also on swamp room
records. it's a limited, double 10" album on multi-coloured vinyl.
collector's material but a superb album as well. it has a really nice
version of 'mom & dad' (frank zappa).
also worth mentioning is that the camper van chadbourne 'zappa medley' has
been re-released on camper van chadbourne: used record pile (on knitting
factory)
