Dining
Out
Seafood is the specialty
in Sihanoukville. Fresh ocean fish, crabs, prawns, squid
and more are available prepared in Asian and Western
fashion. The best seafood restaurants, such as
Hawaii Seaview and Sokha, are located near the
beaches, though there are also good places in town like
Apsara and Thai Kim. If you are looking
for western food,
Les Feuilles, Chez Claude and MASH offer
some of the best in town. The Angkor Arms and
Marlin also have burgers, fish and chips and the
like. For budget food check out
Caledonian, Mick and Craig’s and the
noodle stands in town and
Mealy Chenda, Vann’s Place,
Melting Pot,
Chuck’s Place and the street side cafes on
Weather Station Hill. A few personal
recommendations...the local crab is excellent ...the
prawns are always fresh...order your fresh fish grilled
not fried...try the ‘ammoc’.
Western
Breakfast
As a general rule, Cambodians eat noodle soup (kui-teo)
or fried meat with rice and pickled vegetables for
breakfast. Cambodian breakfast runs around 1500-5000R.
and is served by Thai Kim and other corner restaurants
in the downtown from 6:00AM. For a western breakfast
(eggs, meat, potatoes, beans, toast) go to
Les Feuilles, Chez Claude, Marlin, Mick &
Craig’s,
Chuck’s Place,
Caledonian or
Melting Pot.
After
Dark
Relaxing, imbibing and perhaps shooting a little pool is
probably the most popular evening entertainment amongst
foreign visitors. Other options include dancing at the
discos,
singing
at one of the many karaoke bars, wagering at a casino
and go-carting at
O-Bye Karting. If dancing is your preference,
the discos (Angkor Disco and Biba) open
around 8PM and close by midnight. If liquid refreshment
in a quieter, more international establishment is to
your liking, Les
Feuilles has a pool tables.
Angkor Arms and Chez Claude are open till
midnight and
Melting Pot,
Caledonian,
Chuck’s Place and
Moonshine offer a laid-back, budget traveler
atmosphere.
Late
Night
After
midnight it can get pretty quiet in Sihanoukville.
Unless it is a busy night or there is a special event,
the western places usually close around midnight and
Cambodian discos even earlier. Whatever the time, drive
by the
Caledonian,
Marlin, and Mick & Craig’s as they stay
open as late there are customers. Enjoying popularity is
the very late night
Moonshine, sometimes staying open until 5AM. Obye
Karting is open 24 hours and the recently opened
Chuck’s Other Place on Serendipity Beach is open
all night. If it is food that you are in search of,
there are several little ‘Nameless Chinese Restaurants’
in the middle of town that are open as late as 3:30AM.
Otherwise, after 1:00AM, the party is over except at a
couple little beer stands in front of the market and a
few places in the red light districts.
