SHOPPING:
Sihanoukville is no
shopping Mecca but you can buy pretty much
everything you need. With the exception of the
convenience stores, the markets are geared toward
the locals. Culturally speaking, this makes a trip
to the market a lot more interesting but a bit more
difficult as well.
Traditional
Markets (Psah
Leu)
(Upper Market) This is the largest market. When
people refer to ‘the market’, they mean this one.
There is a particularly good selection of fruit and
flowers in the back section. Traveler’s sundries
such as shampoo, toothpaste, razors, etc. are
available on the central aisle. The market opens and
closes with the sun. On 7 Makara near Omui. |

Psah
Pinichecom
(53)
Much smaller and more limited than Psah Leu, this
market has a very ‘local’ feel to it. It offers
mostly food, sundries and clothes. On the corner of
St. No. 109 and Boray Kamakor St.
Night Markets
The night market is
geared toward locals and made up mostly of noodle,
fruit and drink stands. Several little soup and
fruit stands set up in the evening along Ekareach
through the center of town.
Psah Leu Night Market
Noodle stalls and fruit stands. Located on
and around the corner of 7 Makara and Omui near Psah
Leu. Sometimes open at 4:00AM.
Convenience
Stores
There are several ‘drink
shops’ around town which sell soda, beer, liquors
and canned foods, particularly in the area near the
market. But there are really only four shops
specializing in imported foods and drinks.
Samudera
(78) Small
market with a good stock of foreign foods, drinks
and some specialty items. Many of the local
restaurants buy their stock here. Good business
connections. On 7 Makara St. about 30m north of
Ekareach St. Open from 7:00 - 20:00. Tel: 034-933441
Sovannak Phoum
(72) Small market with some foreign items including
cheeses, wine, coffee and razors. On Ekareach in the
center of town. 7:00AM - 10:00PM. Tel: 034-320310
Star Mart
Convenience stores connected to Caltex stations
offering drinks, canned goods, beach products, ice
cream, etc. Good place for most items the tourist
may need. One shop is in the center of town on
Ekareach St. and the other is 3km north on Rte. 4.
Photo Shops
Not the highest quality
processing in Cambodia but it will do in a pinch.
Good film is available.
Apsara
Photo Shop
(75) On Street 108. Tel: 034-933596. Film,
processing, photocopying.
Konica
Photo Express
(82) On 7 Makara St. opposite Psah Leu. Tel:
011-812985. Film, processing.
Books and
Newspapers
The Cambodia Daily
and the Phnom Penh Post can usually be found
at the news stands in front of Psah Leu. Some
guesthouses have the Bayon Pearnik. A small
selection of books is available at Star Mart in the
center of town.
You may
notice stands along the roads selling seashells and
coral. The harvesting of coral and shells is
destroying reefs, damaging the ocean
environment and is illegal. Further, those shells
are so shiny and beautiful because they contained
living animals when they were collected - animals
now dead to provide such perfect specimens. Please
do not encourage this trade.
