HOTEL & GUEST HOUSE
Excepting holiday
weekends, there is no shortage of hotel rooms in
Sihanoukville. Most fall into the $10-$20 range with
A/C, TV, and hot water. In the last year there have
been several new additions at both ends of the hotel
spectrum. The Crystal, Seaside and Peak
Hotel represent Sihanoukville’s upper end.
For the budget-conscious, the concentration of
inexpensive places on Weather Station Hill (a.k.a.
Port Hill)* continues to grow. Mealy Chenda
is still an old favorite of the budget crowd but
places such as MASH, Melting Pot, Bungalow
Village and Chuck’s Place as well as the
nearby Cocoon and Outback have also
gained quick popularity. Caledonian, Kim Chantha
and Angkor Inn in town are also well-known
budget guesthouses. There is an increasing number of
‘nameless’ guesthouses popping up around town,
especially along Ekareach St. and near Ochheuteal
beach.
In a sense, hotels and guesthouses fall into two
broad categories: on the beach and not on the beach.
The advantage to hotels on the beach is obvious but
they also tend to be fewer in number and more
expensive than places in town. When weighing your
hotel options, bear in mind that it’s only a
5-minute moto ride/30 minute walk from the town to
the closer beaches.
(* How to designate this
hill, what name to use in English, is matter of
debate. Some say "Backpackers Hill", but this is a
new reference. Some expats that were here during the
UNTAC period, including Chuck of Chuck's Place,
refer to it as "Port Hill." Others argue that Port
Hill is the hill directly behind the port with the
Peak Hotel on top. The translation of the Cambodian
name for the hill is "Weather Station Hill" or
"Meteorological Station Hill". I have chosen to use
"Weather Station Hill", not because I believe it to
be the correct designation, but to avoid the stigma
of the first suggestion, the controversy of the
second, and to yield to what seems to be the
accepted Cambodian designation.)
