Many worlds within the galaxy are very hot, but even on more temperate planets, such as Earth, there are certain environments that require special clothing to help keep Starfleet personnel in the best operating environment possible; whether it be for camoflauge reasons, or to keep its wearer cooler than if they wore the standard duty uniform.
The lightweight, UV resistant, loose clothing provides ideal desert protection. As with many other conditions desert uniforms are often accompanied by durable, lightweight back packs that normally contain all the neccessities for surviving in desert-like conditions.
Colour banded cuffs and chest bands indicate department. The communicator can be worn either of the T-shirt or outer cloak, and other standard equipment can be attached as usual with the normal belts and holsters under the cloak.
Unlike when wearing other uniforms, Starfleet personnel are allowed to wear the T-shirt outside the trousers. Also the boots are not as heavy as the leather Starfleet norm, instead they are softer, lighter and wider to make walking through sand an easier task. The trouser leg is designed to cover the tops of the shoes to protect from the sand.
