The Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) suits were designed to operate in vacuum or environments unsuitable for humanoid survival, and hence provide a self-contained atmosphere for prolonged survival. Centuries of development have created a versatile, comparatively lightweight and flexible design.
The suit's gloves provide enough freedom of movement for an able user to manipulate controls, use a phaser or do other precision tasks. Although not equipped with thrusters like some of its spacesuit predecessors, it does have gravity boots that allow personnel to remain firmly attached to whatever surface they need to whilst conducting a variety of proceedures. The controls for the gravity boots are located on the left thigh, whilst the controls for the suit's internal systems, such as life support and communications, are on the left forearm.
The under garments for wearers of the EVA suit provide a comfortable tight fit and offer some limited insulating protection in the event the life support fails. Notably, the 'under garments' are also entirely practical as stand alone field uniforms, and are ideal for situations were personnel must arrive at a destination in EVA suits and then go about their business without them. Both the EVA suit and the under garments carry departmental colours to make identification somewhat easier.
The EVA suit will continue to be of great importance to Starfleet personnel because they allow personnel the freedom of movement and level of interaction that support craft never could.
