The Starfleet flight suit is of a special design and are normally only used onboard Yamato by the 8 pilot's who fly the 4 Viper-class Advanced Tactical Fighters when they are engaged in operations or during training. These flight suits are also used by other pilots when deemed appropriate, particularly during combat operations. The development of these suits began during the beginning of the Dominion war when it was quickly realised that fighter pilots were vulnerable in standard duty uniforms should their fighter be damaged but not destroyed - often not to be located for days amongst the wreckage of fleet battles.
The pilot's uniform is tight fitting, making operating in the small confines of the Viper-class easier than with regular duty uniforms. It is particularly resistant to fire which provides increased protection should a Viper take damage. The suit is also highly insulative, which both protects from extreme heat and extreme cold, both of which are possibilities if a Viper takes damage to it's life support systems.
Although fighter craft have inertial dampening systems to protect their occupants from G-forces, these too can be damaged, and so this suit is designed to act as a limited G-suit that may allow a damaged fighter to return to it's mother-ship unaided, albeit at reduced speeds and manoeuverability.
No departmental colours are used on the flight suits due to the specific nature of its use.
