Start Walking

Having disembarked from the ferry, it's worth pausing a while near the wharf to take in the spectacular views of the harbour, opera house, harbour bridge and city skyline from Cremorne Point.

If you were lucky enough to acquire some coffee and cake from the stall, you can sit on the nearby seats or on the grass overlooking the harbour to enjoy them while marvelling at the view.

Across the harbour you'll see Fort Denison - a small island fort with a martello tower built in the 1840's to protect Sydney from attack by sea - with a backdrop of city skyscrapers. Fort Denison on Sydney Harbour
Sydney Opera House viewed from Cremorne Point Further to the right, the Sydney Opera House ...
and Sydney Harbour Bridge, arching above the suburb of Kirribilli. Sydney Harbour Bridge viewed from Cremorne Point
Sydney skyline under stormy clouds Although the view's at its magnificent best on a sunny day, even cloudy or stormy looking days have their charm.

You may also be treated to a display of yachts sailing gracefully up the harbour - sometimes just a few, other times it seems like hundreds.

The Bounty tall ship on Sydney Harbour Keep an eye out too for the "Bounty" - a replica of an 18th century tall ship that sails in the harbour every day (see links page if you're interested in taking a cruise on it).
When you can tear yourself away from the lovely view, climb the stairs up the small cliff across the road from the wharf to get to the walking path.

If your mobility is limited, you can avoid the stairs by heading left along the footpath from the wharf instead of right.

Just around the first bend in the road, cross to the right hand side of the road and go up the laneway or pathway that leads up in front of the houses on top of the cliff.  This path doubles back to where the steps from the wharf emerge on top of the cliff.
