Episode Stats: Japanese Episode 31: "Deigudaa ga Ippai!" ("Full of Deigda!')
Satoshi, Kasumi, and Takeshi are lost in a mountain range. Suddenly, they hear a noise and go to investigate. A bunch of cargo trucks are driving and then crash unexpectedly. It is discovered that the ones behind the trucks' crashing are Deigda! For some unknown reason, the cute mole pokemon are destroying any vehicles carrying supplies to the construction site of a dam. The head construction worker, Kantoku, asks for all pokemon trainers coming through the area to help exterminate the Deigda ruining the construction. Just then, Shigeru is driven up, along with a busfull of other trainers. Meanwhile, Mushashi and Kojirou are depressed because of their repeated failures, saying that if Dogasu and Arbo would evolve they would have a better chance of exterminating the Deigda (and getting the reward of a week-long stay at a hot springs resort). At about that time, the trainers are being instructed on how to exterminate the Deigda. The trainers call on their pokemon but they won't come out of their Monster Balls. Seeing how the pokemon won't fight, Shigeru decides to leave. That night, Satoshi and the gang are in a hot springs when they see a bunch of Deigda and decide to follow. They find a garden made by the Deigda and their evolved forms Dugtrio. It is soon discovered that building the dam would destroy the Deigda's and Dugtrio's home, so Kantoku calls off the construction of the dam. Just then, the Rocket Dan appear with their newly-evolved pokemon, Matadogasu and Arbok! They are quickly defeated by Pikachu and a bunch of angry Deigda/Dugtrio. With the pokemon at peace and the Rocket Dan defeated, Satoshi and the gang head off to the next city.
*Kantoku has no dub name. *Pun time! In the dub, here's what's said: Satoshi: "My name is Ash Ketchium, the loser from
Pallet (groans)"
Do you wonder why Mushashi randomly said "My name's Jessie!"? In the original, Satoshi commented on how his name must mean "4th place." You see, one of the words for the number four in Japanese is "shi," and since Satoshi has the "shi" character in his name, he thinks this must mean he's destined to be in fourth place (but he's not-he's destined to be in sixteenth! ^0^). This is why Musashi suddenly shouts out her name. 4Kids didn't even try to make up a new pun for this scene. Thanks to Denise from the Indiana Sailor Moon Mailing List for pointing this out. *The "Principle of Induced Evolution" is actually called "Pokemon Shinka no Housoku" ("Appendix <as in a book appendix> of Pokemon Evolution"). There's nothing "induced" about the evolution of Dogasu and Arbo. It's not like using a Thunder Stone to evolve a Pikachu. *This line from the dub is all backwords. "Diglett plows the ground and Dugtrio plants the trees." Dugtrio plows the ground while Deigda plants the trees. It's obvious just by looking at the pokemon. How could 4Kids mistranslate this? *The scene when Musashi and Kojirou introduce their newly-evolved pokemon has a lot of kabuki influences. The little wooden blocks Nyasu clacks together are known as Kabuki clappers which are used in kabuki plays to signify the beginning and the end of the play (or in this case, the end of Dogasu and Arbo and the beginning of Matadogasu and Arbok). The curtain in the background is the typical kabuki curtain but are the wrong colors (they usually are a red-brown, green, and black color). Just a side note-curtains in kabuki plays are usually much wider than ones used in typical American plays and are drawn from the side, not raised. The tree trunks on which the Monster Balls rested on are typical kabuki decorations. More on kabuki theatre can be found in the next episode. *Matadogasu has two voices when it talks (kind of like DBZ's Gotenks or Vegetto). In the dub it doesn't. *When the Deigda are saying "Diglett Dig, Diglett Dig, Trio Trio Trio,"
the Rocket Dan join in at the "Trio Trio Trio" part. In the Japanese,
the Rocket Dan go "Dagu Dagu Dagu" (Dig Dig Dig).

Pocket Monsters was not created by me. It was created by Satoshi Tajiri and the crew at TV-Tokyo. Pokemon is (c) Game Freak, Nintendo, 4Kids Productions, Hasbro, Bandai, and a ton of other companies. When you have a popular anime like Pokemon, lots of people own it so it's impossible to list every company who owns a piece of Pokemon. No infringement of copyrights is meant by the creation of the web site. All images were gotten from official websites (Nintendo, TV-Tokyo, etc.) unless otherwise noted (I don't steal images from other sites!). |
