The name ACKLOM has been spelt in various ways over the years, among which are:
Aclam, Acclam, Acclom, Acclome, Aclome, Acklome, Aclaham. The two most
common forms today are Acklom and Acklam.

The family appears to have taken its name from, or given its family name to the village of
Acklam in Yorkshire, England.

Wryan or Wren who died 1161, the first recorded member of the family, was Lord of
Acclom in Cleveland, Could Inglebury, Holdenfield, Manor of Lockington, Heddon,
Everingham, Neswicke, Partington and advons and parsonage of Benton.

His descendant, Sir John, who died 1306, married a daughter of Sir John Hilton,
Knight, of Hilton. Other descendants married daughters of the following families:
Morebie, Fairfax, Cawood and Pilkington.

* Then, William Acclome, born about 1508, married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Ralph
(Rafe or Rauffe) Ryther of Ryther in Yorkshire (through the Ryther ancestors, can be
traced a line to King John of England and beyond). His son William married in about
1553, Margaret, daughter of John, Lord Mordaunt of Turvey in Bedford. Four
generations later,

* John Acklom married in 1686, Elizabeth Newbury, whose son Richard, born at
Bawtry 1690, was of Wiseton Hall in Nottinghamshire. He married Elizabeth, daughter
of Sir George Cooke, Bt., of Wheatley. Their grandson Richard, also of Wiseton,
married Elizabeth Barnard (sister to the Earl of Bandon), whose daughter Esther
married Viscount Althorpe, afterwards 3rd Earl Spencer. Esther died shortly after the
birth of a still-born child.

* Another son of Richard and Elizabeth was George, Captain in the 61st Foot Regt. His
wife was Mary Evatt of Colchester. Their grandson Col. John Evatt Acklom married in
Dublin, Ireland, in 1833, Margaret, daughter of Col Butcher. One of their sons, Edwin
Dalziel Acklom, Commander in the Royal Navy married an Irish girl, Rose Eliza Coffee
from Kilkee, Co Clare in Ireland. Of his children, Henrietta Ethel Maud Acklom, born
1879, married St John Adcock and are my grandparents.
