The family of Plowden has been seated at Plowden in the Co Salop (Shropshire),
England, from a period ante-ceding the earliest records extant in the vicinity. Roger
Plowden was a crusader under Richard the Lion Heart and is believed to have been at
the siege of Acre in 1194.
Roger Plowden of Plowden had a son Philip (born ca 1203) who had a son John who
had a son John (born ca 1284), who had a son
John (born ca 1328) of Plowden Hall, Shropshire. He married Joan Salter, daughter of
John and Anne (de) Montgomery. Their son
John Plowden married in about 1408, Maud, daughter of Sir John Barley, Knt. and
had
Edmund Plowden, born ca 1410. By his wife, Jane Cloebury he had a son
John Plowden (born ca 1445) married Margaret Blayney and had a son
Humphrey Plowden (born ca 1480-1557) who married circa 1515, Elizabeth Sturry,
dau of John Sturry of Rossell, near Shrewsbury, co Salop and relict of William
Wollascott. Of their six children,
Edmund Plowden (1517-1584), of Plowden Hall, married Katherine Sheldon of
Beeley in the county of Oxford and had five children of which
Margaret Plowden (born about 1536) married in about 1553, John Walcot, of Walcot
in Shropshire.
