BUCK HAS TO CHOOSE BETWEEN HIS PONY EXPRESS FAMILY AND HIS KIOWA HERITAGE TO SAVE HIS FRIEND, IKE...

Kid and Ike arrive at a destroyed waystation and finds the stationmaster in bad shape. He was whipped by Kiowas who he says are after the Pony Express. Nearby, Ike finds a round board depicting two animals.

Meanwhile, Lou, Jimmy, Buck and Cody read about Indian trouble while in town getting supplies from Tompkins. The store owner orders Buck to leave. The rider quietly complies but Hickok and Cody argue with Tompkins. The older man sets two of his men on them, they fight back and in the process almost destroy the general store. When they confront Buck for leaving them, he tells them they fought because they were called Indian lovers.

Kid and Ike bring the round board with them back to the station. Teaspoon asks Buck to interpret and he tells them it was a warning, something like "keep off our land." Teaspoon tells the riders the Indians are fighting for their way of life which started changing when the white men came along.

Later that night, Buck slips out of the bunkhouse to meet his brother who happens to be the Kiowa war chief Red Bear. The round board was actually a message for "Running Buck." Red Bear asks Buck to leave the Pony Express and join him, saying if he continues to ride with the company "my warriors may kill you." The Kiowa consider them enemy "because they carry the white man's word." Buck tells his brother the tribe might be crushed if they fight the white men, but his brother tells him, "If that is our destiny, let it be." When Buck refuses to join him, Red Bear tells his half brother that he may have to kill him if they cross paths again.

Buck later follows Kid during the latter's run and saves him from a Kiowa war party. The other riders become suspicious of him though when they learn that his brother is chief of the Kiowas. Faced with his friends distrust, Buck leaves the bunkhouse and camps outside. He tells Teaspoon, who tries to persuade him to return, that he might have to leave the company.

The next day, Ike is captured by Kiowas during a mail run with Kid. Buck sets out to save Ike alone but Kid follows him. When they reach the Indian camp Buck goes in alone. He tells his brother he'll have another warrior if he frees Ike. A trial is ordered to see if Buck's heart is truly Kiowa. Buck undergoes a series of tests and torture, but in the end he proves himself to be a true Kiowa warrior. His brother, however, sets him free, saying Buck's heart remains with his white family and that one more warrior won't make a difference in the coming war. Buck goes back with Kid and Ike to Sweetwater.
