The Kid
|
Black Ulysses THE KID'S SOUTHERN BELIEFS ARE SHAKEN TO THE CORE WHEN THE RIDERS MEET AN ESCAPED SLAVE... A storm spooks the horses and they break out of the corral. As the riders try to bring them back, Emma notices that a foal is missing. Before the boys could get out to look for it, a black man arrives carrying the young animal. He introduces himself as Ulysses and says he is looking for work. Teaspoon and Emma hire him on, though they can't pay him. They offer him room and board.
Ulysses, however, proves to be a wanted man. Apparently, he is slave who escaped after killing his master. During a run, Buck encounters a group of Missouri state militia who whip a Sweetwater resident after he and his wife take Ulysses in for a night. Ulysses tells Emma, Teaspoon and the boys that he is seen as the next Nat Turner by the State of Missouri since he is some sort of a leader for an underground uprising against slavery. Emma tells him to take his chance with the people of Sweetwater, assuring him he will be protected by the townspeople. Emma's faith seems misplaced, though, when the Sweetwater folks deny Ulysses protection. The riders try to help Ulysses escape the soldiers but he is caught. At the last possible moment, the townspeople come through for Ulysses and the riders as they stand up against the state militia. Teaspoon encourages Ulysses to stay in Sweetwater since it is a free territory but the black man says he wants to do his share in helping out former slaves start a new life and join the underground railroad.
