THE KID'S LONG-LOST BROTHER JED TURNS UP IN SWEETWATER AS A LIEUTENANT IN THE ARMY, BUT IS HE FAMILY OR FOE...

A gang of bandits, who work for the South, ambush a group of soldiers who are supposed to escort $200,000 in gold from Sweetwater to St. Joe. They steal their uniforms and leave them in the woods without food or clothing. When they reach Sweetwater, the gang, posing as soldiers, find out that the shipment is delayed and they have to say for three more days in town.

Buck and Jimmy help Kid buy a new hat. While in town, Kid sees one of the men in uniform and he looks vaguely familiar. He approaches them and asks the leader if his name is Jed. The man asks if they've met before and Kid responds by asking if him if he remembers cursing at a stubborn animal who likes to wallow in a creek. The man recognizes Kid and introduces him to his men as his "little brother."

It turns out that Kid and Jed were separated ten years ago. Jed was about to say their father ran out on them but Kid cuts him off and tells his fellow riders that their father was driven off their farm because of a drought, that they were taken in by different families. Later, Jed asks Kid why he chose to lie about their father who, in reality, beat them and their mother up. Kid says he is not wasting his time becoming angry over their father.

Meanwhile, a Pinkerton detective shows up in Sweetwater to help protect the gold shipment. He introduces himself to Sam who directs him to the soldiers' camp. When Jed finds the detective, he kills him. He and another gang member also argue about the gold. Jed wants to give the gold to the South, while Stark wants to keep it for themselves. Jed says it's good business to give gold to the South since the people feed them, nurse them when they are wounded and hide them when they are in trouble with the law.

Sam finds the dead Pinkerton detective and asks Jed about it. Jed says there are a lot of "vermin out there gunning for Pinkertons." When Sam continues to ask about the dead detective, Jed becomes extremely defensive and threatens Sam, saying if he attempts to interfere, he'll regret it. Kid, who hears about the gold shipment for the first time, begins to doubt his brother's actions. He stands up for his brother, though, but becomes even more suspicious when Sam points out that Jed's horse doesn't carry an army brand. On his way to town, Sam sees Teaspoon and asks for his help about sending the fastest rider to Fort Laramie for confirmation of the identities of the soldiers. Teaspoon sends Lou.

On the other hand, Kid begins asking Jed about his activities. He tells his brother he hoped he changed. But Jed tells him about the coming war and that the gold will buy the South the guns and ammunitions it needs. Jed asks Kid to ride with him. Torn between his love for his brother and doing the right thing, Kid becomes ornery. Teaspoon tells him he's got a good heart and to listen to it.

Sam asks the bank manager to stall the outlaws and tell them the gold isn't in town yet. Lou arrives and tells Sam he is right, that Jed is indeed an outlaw. The Marshall asks the for the riders' help and decides to tell Kid the truth. Kid rushes to confront Jed, though he doesn't tell him about Sam's suspicions. He tells his brother he couldn't ride with him.

Meanwhile, somebody mentions to Jed's men that the gold is already in town. They go to the bank to retrieve the shipment, but find the bank empty. They realize it is a trap and they begin shooting their way out of it. A gunfight ensues with most of Jed's men getting killed by the riders and Sam's deputies. Jed is able to escape into a barn where he tries to reload his gun. Kid follows him and tries to stop him. He shoots Kid in the shoulder. Jimmy walks in and sees Jed aiming the gun at Kid. He shouts at Jed who points the gun at him. Jimmy shoots and kills Jed.
