Fall From Grace

AN ARGUMENT BETWEEN HICKOK AND TEASPOON RESULTS IN THE FORMER QUITTING THE PONY EXPRESS AND JOINING A BAND OF RUTHLESS GUNRUNNERS...

An old friend of Teaspoon, Lucius, drops by Sweetwater on military business. He is killed in a brothel, however, after he finds an employee of the place rummaging through his things. Apparently, the madam is also involved in the gun-running business and Lucius is in possession of the map which shows where the army's artillery and ammunition is hidden.

While in town one day, the riders witness a prostitute being beaten. Jimmy rescues the girl and is offered a job by Grace, the madam of the brothel, who was impressed by the rider's show of force. When they get back to the station, Teaspoon, Emma and the riders find Marshall Sam Cain waiting for them. Sam brings Teaspoon news of his friend's untimely demise. When Teaspoon asks if Lucius death has anything to do with the map-making he and the riders did at the Pawnee river, Sam said it was most likely. The army had hidden a cache of guns and ammunition at a secret location and Lucius had the map. Sam said the army was worried the map might fall into the wrong hands -- specifically the hands of Grace Rowland, the owner of the cathouse who might be interested in the fortune the sale of the artillery and ammunition might bring.

Teaspoon finds Jimmy attracted to the young lady he saved the other day. The stationmaster tries to dissuade Jimmy from pursuing the "lady of the night" but the rider merely shrugs him off. Vexed, Teaspoon leaves Jimmy behind. Dinner that night was no better. Jimmy continued to ignore Teaspoon's suggestions, even going so far as insulting the older man. The other riders try to shut up Jimmy but he wouldn't be silenced. Teaspoon ended up firing Jimmy from the Pony Express.

Jimmy goes to town and accepts Grace's job offer -- strongman/bodyguard/hired gun. He immediately proves himself to be an asset to the brothel. Lou's pleadings wouldn't change his mind. Even Amy, the woman he saved, advised him to get away from the cathouse, away from Grace. The riders at the station are doing some persuasion of their own. They try to talk to Teaspoon about accepting Jimmy back but the stationmaster remains stern.

At the brothel, Grace's hired hands say they cannot find the cache of guns and ammunition. Grace says the map maybe incomplete and sends two of her strongmen after an army man named Colonel Brown. When Grace sends Jimmy after Teaspoon, the rider agrees saying he doesn't owe the elderly man anything. But when he learns that Teaspoon will get hurt, Jimmy shoots the two men with him and then he shoots himself in the arm. Jimmy tells Grace that he nearly persuaded Teaspoon to go with them when the stationmaster became antsy and forced a fight and that the two men with him were killed by four riders. Jimmy tells Grace he barely got out himself. Grace, however, doesn't completely buy Jimmy's story.

That night, Cody rides into town and tries to persuade Jimmy to go back to the station with him. This time, Jimmy tells Cody the truth -- that his getting fired was all an act so he could get hired on at the cathouse. Jimmy and Teaspoon were actually working for the army. Jimmy and Cody try to find out where arsenal is but they find a dead Colonel Brown instead. Grace's huge strongman Bo finds them as well. The two riders get a beating but manage to knock out the man. Grace then enters the room with a gun pointed at Jimmy. But before she could shoot Hickok, Amy shoots her first.

With Grace dead, it is up to her male partner to get the guns. Sam leads the riders to the Pawnee River and there is a shoot-out. The Marshall and the riders successfully recover the guns and ammunition, minus one cannon perhaps (Cody blows it up). Teaspoon and Jimmy finally confess to their act, with Teaspoon saying that they decided not to involve the whole group because of the inherent danger of the situation. One slip-up from the whole group and Jimmy might have been killed. Now, Teaspoon and Jimmy might even get medals from the army.
