IKE MAKES THE DECISION ON WHETHER TO SEND A MURDERER TO JAIL OR SAVE HIS BESTFRIEND...
Ike witnesses the massacre of stagecoach passengers by a gang of bandits. But his attempts to rescue the lone survivor fail when he hesitates to kill one of the men. Haunted by the consequences of his actions, Ike becomes withdrawn and desolate.
In
town, Sam tells Emma, Tespoon and the boys about the stagecoach massacre
at Mesa Verde -- the very same one Ike saw. The marshall says he has an
idea who did it but he'll need proof before he could anything. Ike hears
this and in anger, starts running away from his friends. He bumps into
an older man, whom he recognizes as the leader of the gang of bandits.
The man recognizes him, too, but laughs at his inability to talk.
When Teaspoon asks Ike if he knows who the man is, Ike says no. The stationmaster tells Buck and Ike the man is Nickerson and that he and his gang have terrorized the territory but the law can't find a witness to put him away. Resolved to make amends, Ike leads Sam and the riders to Nickerson and tells them the truth.
The trial of Nickerson, however, is scheduled in Blue Creek because that is where the circuit judge is. Sam assigns several of his deputies to the station to protect Ike. Nickerson's gang attacks at night, killing one of the deputies and injuring the other one. Not wanting mroe blood on his hands, Ike decides to leave for Blue Creek alone. But his friends stick with him and they all make the perilous journey to the other town together.
The riders reach an outpost. Kid is immediately suspicious and he tells the others to spread and look around. Lou sees a couple of horses and cuts the bridles on them. Kid's suspicions are confirmed when members of the gang emerge from the outpost with a gun trained on Ike. The boys manage to save their friend but more gang members arrive. Cody is left behind to try and slow them down while the others race towards Blue Creek.
In
trying to escape the gang, the riders find themselves trapped in a canyon.
Frustrated, Jimmy shouts at Ike and asks him why he didn't shoot Nickerson
when he got the chance. Jimmy was immediately contrite, regretting his
outburst. Kid makes the decision to climb the canyon and pick off the gang
members. The riders don't want to leave him behind, not after Cody. Jimmy
volunteers but Kid says he is the only one who can make the climb.
The riders finally arrive at Blue Creek, minus two of their friends -- Kid and Cody. Sam keeps Ike in jail, the safest place he could be. On their way to dinner, Buck bumps into a lovely woman. He offers to help with her packages and they go off together. Sam, Jimmy and Lou sit at the dinner table but no one has the appetite to eat... until Kid and Cody show up. Lou momentarily forgets being a boy at the joy of seeing the Kid but quickly recovers. Before they get to celebrate, however, a note arrives saying the gang members' got Buck.
The riders decide to tell Ike about his bestfriend. Ike still decides to testify. The riders, on the other hand, scour the town looking for Buck. At the courthouse, Lou becomes suspicious of a man and a woman who leave the courthouse at the same time Ike takes the stand. She follows them out and realizes where Buck is. Cody manages to shoot Buck's would-be killer and save the rider. On the witness stand, Ike hesitates. But as soon as Buck bursts into the courtroom, Ike stands and points the finger at Nickerson.
