JANUARY
ATTIC
Inventory the contents. Post one copy in the attic and another in an office file.

Use empty space inside luggage, trunks and armoires to store small items or out-of-season clothes. Label all the sides of stacked boxes, not the lids, so you can see at a glance what’s inside.

Screw hooks into overhead beams to hang holiday wreaths and bows so they will retain their shape.
Lubricate the attic fan motor and bearings.

Check for signs of rodent infes-tation. If necessary, schedule an appointment with an exterminator or carpenter to close up holes.

Cover stored furniture with old bedsheets to protect from dust and nicks or from any sunlight that may stream in.

Trade in plain boxes for color-coded storage bins: red for Christmas supplies, blue for summer clothes, etc.

Make note now of any holiday items, like ribbons, wreath forms, cards, ornaments, that youre short on. Replenish this month while theyre half price.

Store items around the perimeter so you have a clear path to them.
FEBRUARY
DINING ROOM
Consider donating or selling rarely used space gobblers like punch bowls and cups. Rent them on special occasions as needed.

Inspect tablecloths and napkins. Spot-check for stains and have them professionally cleaned so theyre ready for the next holiday.

Hang large, attractive serving platters on the wall rather than storing them in a cupboard.
Blow dust off silk flower arrangements with a blow dryer. (Do it outside, of course.)

Polish silver flatware. Store in a tarnish-resistant cloth to prevent discoloration.

Clean chandeliers by wiping crystals with a dry cotton cloth. If theyre particularly dirty, wipe with a cloth dampened with water. Polish with a dry cotton cloth.

Wipe away smudges and fingerprints from glass-front china cabinets.
Replace bright lightbulbs with ambient, low-wattage ones. Pink or yellow bulbs add warmth to the room.

Use a favorite large serving bowl as a table centerpiece. Fill with seasonal fruit or foliage such as lemons or pinecones.
