Clear and wipe down countertops. Return only the appliances and gadgets you use every day. Store or mount others in and under counters.

Swap grimy and tattered dishtowels and potholders for new ones.

Defrost freezer. Throw away expired foods or any "mystery" leftovers.

Update emergency contact lists. Laminate CPR instructions and hang on a hook magnet from the fridge.

Replace filter on nonvented range hood.
Toss expired herbs, yeast and baking powder. Wipe down shelves. Put plastic lids from coffee cans under bottles of cooking oil to catch drips.

Wash out the inside of the refrigerator. Vacuum coils beneath and behind fridge. Sanitize drip pan with a bleach solution.

Deodorize cutting boards by rubbing with the cut sides of lemon halves.

Scrub plastic and rubber utensils with a paste of baking soda and water to remove old stains and to deodorize.

Rid electric drip coffeemaker of calcium buildup. Fill carafe with 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water, then pour in reservoir. Run it through the brew cycle. Follow with two cycles of plain water.

Soak oven knobs in hot, soapy water. Scrub loosened grime with old toothbrush. Rinse and return.
Economize on drawer space. Use a pretty, painted flowerpot to keep wooden spoons, ladles, spatulas and the cheese grater within easy reach.

Set a row of potted, fragrant herbs on a sunny windowsill.

Put a decorative hook by the sink to keep your watch and rings safe while you work.

Make a central message center. Glue corkboard over the mirror of an old medicine cabinet. Stash pens, a pad and a phone book inside.

BEDROOMS
Tidy up side tables. Replenish bedside stationery and stamps. Test emergency flashlights and replace batteries if needed.

Throw out earrings with no mates and costume jewelry that is broken or beyond repair.

Sort through drawers. Toss solo socks. Designate a purpose for each space, doing away with unused items in junk drawers.

Use storage boxes with mini wheels and hinged tops to keep off-season clothes under the bed. Lightly sand old cedar blocks to release pest-repelling scent.
Turn mattresses. Vacuum underneath the bed and along inside edges of the bedframe.

Launder mattress pads. Have comforter or bedspread dry-cleaned or washed.

Place cottonballs moistened with a few drops of wintergreen oil in dresser drawers to eliminate musty mildew or stale odors.
Update the hardware on bureaus and switchplates to add some pizzazz.

Turn a favorite but old sundress, tablecloth or piece of vintage fabric into pillowcases to freshen up your bed.

Replace heavy drapes with sheers or shades to allow extra light into the room.

Choose a tailored bedskirt to keep your bed looking neat while hiding underbed storage.

Create a canopy over your bed. Hang two dowels from the ceiling and drape sheer fabric.

Cover a piece of plywood with batting and fabric for an inexpensive, one-of-a-kind headboard.
