FAMILY ROOM
Donate outdated appliances you rarely use, like an old video camera or turntable, to a charity.

Stick one side of a strip of Velcro to the television side. Stick the other side to the remote back so its always easy to find.

Buy a lidded basket for things that dont belong in the room. Return items to their proper place every Saturday morning.
Wipe down telephone receivers with a baby wipe, a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol or a disinfectant spray.

Dust ceiling fans, framed art and bookshelves with microfiber cloths.

Vacuum the floor, windowsills and lampshades. Use a carpet rake to refresh any crushed pile.

Spot-clean carpet and sofas.

Fluff throw pillows in the clothes dryer. Toss in a clean tennis ball to redistribute fillings and a dryer sheet to freshen.
Decorate acid-free photo boxes and stack them as a display. Use them to hold photos until you have time to arrange them.

Revive a dingy couch with a smart, stylish slipcover.

Bejewel existing lampshades with beads or colored crystal trim.

Invest in an ottoman that doubles as a storage unit.

Choose tiered end tables, which offer more than one level of surface.

Paint an outdated or dark end table antique white.
JUNE
LAUNDRY ROOM
Get things up off the floor. Install an iron and board holder and a rack for mops and brooms.

Install a bracketed wooden shelf above the washer to keep detergents, bleach and stain removers handy.

Put a hook magnet on the side of the dryer. Hang a pouch for collecting stray buttons, keys and coins.
Wash or replace ironing-board cover. Spray it with starch and iron in well to make it last longer.

Clean sole plate vents of your iron with a damp cotton swab. Wipe any stubborn spots with white vinegar. Clean off any residue with a cloth dampened with clear water.

Clear washer and dryer tops. Clean the outside surfaces and vacuum debris along the inside lids.

Sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of laundry sorters or hampers to absorb smells and prevent mildew on damp clothes.

Park a trash can by the dryer for lint, used dryer sheets and pocket contents.
Hang a painted, Shaker-style peg rack for umbrellas and aprons.

Store laundry detergent, clothespins or stain-removing solvents in pressed-glass decanters with matching lids.

Cheer up the laundry center by painting the ceiling, the oft-neglected fifth wall, sky blue.
