CLOSETS
Give away garments that dont fit or havent been worn in a year. Be honest and ruthless.

Buy plastic hangers, which may prolong the life of your clothes. Choose a different color for each closet or clothes type.

Install rods in split heights. By hanging shirts above skirts, youll be able to accommodate more than with one long rod. Sort the same type of clothing together.

Store extra sets of sheets inside matching pillowcases so you can always find a complete set.
Wipe down walls. Vacuum shelves.

Rub metal rods with wax paper to remove residue and allow hangers to move more easily.

Dry-clean coats and launder out-of-season clothing. Replace or tighten loose buttons.
Paint closets with white semigloss. This allows you to see clothes clearly and clean scuff marks and dirt easily.

Store purses and wallets with minimum fuss in a deep, rectangular basket or pretty hatbox on closet shelves or dresser top.

Replace a clunky closet door with a ready-made fabric curtain. Slide it on a simple tension rod to add color and visual interest.

Install a decorative hook on the back of the door to give your bathrobe a permanent home.
AUGUST
LIVING ROOM
Weed through books. Wipe down shelves. Dust books, then return only your favorite reads.

Donate unwanted books to a favorite charity. Recycle old catalogs and magazines.

Clear corners and ceilings of cobwebs, and dust windowsills.

Cluster valuable objects away from windows, where theyre likely to fade or yellow from the sun.
Run the sturdier, dishwasher-safe contents of your curio case through the light/china cycle of your dishwasher.

Vacuum fireplace hearth. Wipe down fireplace tools and andirons. Schedule flue and chimney inspection.

Flip and turn cushions of sofas and chairs so theyll wear evenly. Vacuum crevices.

Polish wood surfaces. Brush dirt from lampshade folds with a clean paintbrush or vacuum cleaners brush attachment.
Place a collection of decorative candles in the fireplace during the off season.

Display pretty vases and bowls with cut flowers or forced bulbs on the mantel.

Put out a woven basket to display beautiful blankets and throws when not in use.

Showcase a favorite collection of small items in shadowboxes. Elevate the treasures to art by grouping them at eye level on a wall.
