SEPTEMBER HOME OFFICE
Cull files for outdated bills, tax records and medical documents. Shred sensitive material. Store the rest separately from current paperwork in color-coded files or boxes.
Store computer disks and CDs in clear plastic pocket sheets in a three-ring binder so you can see what you have at a glance.
Mount the phone to the wall. Use a cutlery tray in your desk drawer to organize things routinely dumped there such as pens, pencils, scissors and paper clips.
Create a calendar to mark birthdays, anniversaries, vacation time and school holidays. Fill out monthly, logging appointments and plans as they are made.
Wipe down desk with a clean, damp cloth. Clean windows and vacuum insides of drawers.
Lift dirt from keyboards with a cotton swab lightly dampened with alcohol.
Dust between the keys with a few blasts of compressed air.
Clean computer screens with a dry cloth. Clean off the monitor and peripherals, like printers and scanners, according to directions in the instruction manuals.
Relocate a comfy, upholstered chair to your office for serious reading and creative thinking.
Cover a corkboard in fabric for posting reminders, invitations, tickets, membership cards and coupons.
Re-cover your desk chair with a bright, cheery fabric.
Hide gift-wrapping materials or office supplies in cloth-covered boxes or colored galvanized tins.
OCTOBER BATHROOM
Remove everything from the medicine cabinet and wipe it down. Discard expired medicines, and move the rest to another designated spot (a damp, steamy environment can cause drugs to deteriorate).
Hang the blow dryer, curling iron and electric razor on hooks installed inside the vanity.
Buy wire baskets that stack and slide to corral undercounter clutter.
Hang a shower caddy to organize shampoos and to remedy soap-scum buildup on ledge.
Clear the countertops of dust-collecting bottles and beauty products. Keep them in a covered basket next to or under the sink.
Remove old shampoos and soap.
Rub out rust rings from shower or bathtub surfaces with a paste of cream of tartar and lemon juice. Turn metal cans upside down on their plastic lids to prevent future rings.
Brush lint buildup off the blow dryer screen with an old toothbrush.
Run shower liners and rubber bathtub mats through the washing machine on warm. Add a quarter-half cup of vinegar to rinse cycle.
Store extra rolls of toilet paper in a large wicker basket on the floor.
Outfit an old tub or sink with new fixtures.
Skirt a pedestal sink to hide drab pipes and create more storage.
Opt for a narrow bakers rack or install adjustable shelving if you lack sufficient closet space.
Perk up a plain shower curtain with decorative rings or replace the curtain with a fun print or pattern.
