THE SEARCH BEGINS
When the 36 finalists arrive in Los Angeles to meet with Tyra, Jay and J., everyone is ecstatic to be there, but conflict quickly arises between the girls when personalities clash. Some of the girls are confident they're going to make it, while others aren't sure if they're right for the modeling world. In the end, Tyra is the one who makes that decision with two cuts: one down to 20 girls, and finally, to the 13 who will still be in the running towards becoming America's Next Top Model.

FIRST FLIGHT
The big day arrives for the 36 finalists who land at LAX to continue their audition process toward the final cut of AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL. First to emerge from the airport is Cassandra , the 19-year-old student from Houston, Texas, who is there to focus on herself rather than the competition, followed by Bre , the 19-year-old student from Harlem, New York, who has left her home state for the first time to fly to LA. Nik , the 21-year-old office coordinator from Atlanta, Georgia, is already confident: "I'm not here to win this competition; I am this competition."

After the 36 hopefuls unload their luggage and move into the Beverly Hilton hotel, they meet later to scope each other out for the first time. Ebony , the 18-year-old student from Sylmar, California, is already intimidated by the competition: "These girls are just gorgeous." Jay Manuel arrives to welcome everyone, and they are thrilled to meet him, especially Kyle , the 19-year-old Dairy Queen manager from Dexter, Michigan, who exclaims later, "I almost peed myself" upon meeting Jay.

GETTING STARTED
The next morning, the girls gather poolside for the first challenge, which is about understanding posing. Miss J. arrives, smoothly strutting his stuff armed with heels and handbag, and there are squeals of recognition when he makes his entrance. Two by two, the girls step forward to be analyzed by J., and soon, Jay asks all the girls to strike their fiercest Tyra Banks pose. They all do, but their attempt is soon interrupted when the real Tyra Banks emerges to greet the girls.

Tyra lays it all out on the table: "Look at your competition. You may see girls that are more beautiful than you, but the prettiest girl doesn't necessarily always make it; the edgiest girl doesn't necessarily always make it, but the winner always has something that's extra special." The girls are psyched after first meeting Tyra, and with that, the auditions begin.

Bre is up first, and Tyra questions her about her attitude toward her hometown, Harlem. Bre responds, "Nobody wants to go and venture out, nobody wants to go explore around and explore anything else, and Harlem is it." Bre is apparently not so into bathing, so Miss J. approaches to give her underarm a sniff. J. is not impressed. Tyra is, however: "She is spunky."

THE DAIRY QUEEN
Kyle is next, a small town girl who feels blessed to live a very normal life with loving parents. She hasn't been exposed to much in her 19 years; she recently met her first lesbian, Kim , the 21-year-old student from New York City, who follows Kyle. She's a Wesleyan grad who's out and proud with what she calls a more masculine look than most of the other girls. However, Jay isn't impressed by the quarterback pose she strikes for the panel. Next is Jayla , the 20-year-old delivery driver from Tucson, Arizona, who is a "horrible example of what a Jehovah's Witness is supposed to be. I'm a fornicator, I'm a smoker, I curse like a sailor, and I don't go to church."

Next is Nicole , the 19-year-old student from Grand Forks, North Dakota, and she has a contentious relationship with her mother. J. grimaces when Nicole gets down on her knees and says she'll do anything to be chosen; he tells her, "Don't ever, ever say you'll do anything."

LIP BALM CAN BE A PROBLEM

That night, the girls head out to get a few things at the store, and Nicole goes in search of some lip balm, to no avail. The other girls are already tired of the whining and complaining attitude Nicole has been putting on, especially Bre: "If Nicole…makes it in the house, seriously, I am going to stuff her in the closet and leave her there."

The next morning begins with Nik, who is extremely self-reliant and has a unique look, and continues with plus-size Diane , the 23-year-old criminal defense investigator from Orlando, Florida, who makes a great first impression on Tyra. She describes her job as an investigator with the public defender's office, and while she knows being a plus-sized model will be a challenge, "Big D" feels up to the task. Susannah is next, a 19-year-old from Carthage, New York, who has just had half her breast removed because of a number of lumps she'd found. She gives her best walk, but unfortunately, she's not up to the task.

JAY'S TRIVIA CHALLENGE
Cassandra, a proud Texan and beauty pageant queen, knows her pageant history, but can't name three working CoverGirls. On the other hand, Ashley , the 22-year-old boutique buyer from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, rattles off all her favorite designers when grilled by Jay. He calls her a cross between Charlize Theron and Sharon Stone.

April, a 22-year-old from Vegas, makes her entrance in front of the panel wearing extremely long fake eyelashes, and Tyra sends her out to wash her face free of makeup. Next is Lisa , the 24-year-old assistant wardrobe stylist from Los Angeles, California, and Tyra zeroes in on the fact that she has had a difficult childhood, with a mother who had what Lisa calls "no maternal instincts." But she feels stronger than anyone in the competition because of her past, adding, "my heart is too big for me sometimes, but at the same time, that makes me who I am." Tyra already loves her: "She's the sweetest thing in the world." Jay rolls his eyes.

RAMEN NOODLES CAN BE A PROBLEM TOO
Dinnertime arrives, and the girls chow down on sandwiches and ramen noodles, and when Nicole complains about the fact that she made her noodles incorrectly, Bre calls her on the carpet. Other girls chime in about Nicole's complaining, and though Nicole tries to defend herself, the discussion escalates and the claws come out. Nicole's not worried: she'll use her own strategy and wait and see what happens.

Sarah , the 18-year-old fragrance counter representative from Boonville, Missouri, is next in front of the panel, with broad shoulders and lips like Angelina Jolie's. She's been scammed before in the modeling world, but Tyra lets her know that she shouldn't have to pay for someone to tell her whether or not she can make it as a model. Whitney from Fairfield, California is an auctioneer with the Future Farmers of America, when Jay gets down on all fours as a pig, Whitney demonstrates her auctioning technique. Latricia makes her enthusiastic entrance, and she wants to be a model so she can get her hair and nails done, while Krystle wants to use her celebrity to benefit the world. Unfortunately for Krystle, Tyra asks what her last community service was, and when Krystle doesn't have an answer for her, it doesn't look good.

FAME ISN'T MAGIC
Coryn , the 19-year-old retail clerk from Minneapolis, Minnesota, nervously makes her entrance, and she is concerned for her mother and little sister, since her mom hasn't had a job for two years. When Tyra asks if Coryn thinks her success will help her mother out of her funk, Coryn replies simply, "No," and Tyra agrees: "Fame is not magic." Redhead Regina is next, who recently lost a great deal of weight, followed by Ebony, who feels "born to be a model." Her motto: "Don't get it twisted." Tyra is extremely impressed when Ebony can instantly recall the names and descriptions of most of the other contestants from memory.

J. and Jay gather all the girls together to reveal that there will be a fashion show that night, but there's only room for 20 girls; the first cut is about to be made. The 16 girls who are cut will sit in the audience and support those who make it to the next step. The girls rush to the dressing tables to find out who will continue on, and emotions are intense when they get the news. Some, like Kyle and Coryn, are overjoyed, while others break down in tears when they don't find their photos.

THE FIRST SHOW
The fashion show gets underway, with the girls racing to pull on their first ensembles. The girls get their walks on, while those who didn't make it continue to shed tears while sitting in the audience. As she expected to, Sarah trips on the runway but keeps going, doing the best she can do. In the end, the full group does a final walk, and they are overjoyed when they finish.

The next day, Tyra greets the 20 finalists for a one-on-one meeting. "Pretty got you here, but pretty's not going to get you to the next level; it's all about personality and what's beautiful on the inside." It's the girls' last chance to let Tyra know what makes them special, and the pressure is on for everyone.

YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT WILL SMITH?
Regina meets with Tyra first, and she feels absolutely ready to model, and Coryn and Nicole each want to prove they can be successful. Cassandra criticizes Regina, Kyle wants to try something other than working at Dairy Queen, and Jayla wants her own billboard. Tyra is stunned when Lisa asks about what it was like to work with Will Smith, while Sarah tells of a dream she has of driving away from her town and never looking back. Nik explains she wants to be a model with all her heart, while Kim says her parents have prepared her to make it in the world academically, but she wants to be a model instead. Bre wants Tyra to know she's an artist on the runway, and Ebony's burning desire to be a model is a forest fire in her heart.

THE FINAL CUT
Now the hard part begins for Tyra, Jay and J. Kim's walk leaves something to be desired, while Ashley looks more like an actress than a model. Lisa excelled on the runway, knowing exactly where and how to pose, but Jay doesn't like her photo. Cassandra has great skin, though her features seem a little pinched; Coryn definitely needs help with her eyebrows; and Nicole's look is very current in fashion. J. thinks Diane could actually win the competition despite her plus size, but Jay doesn't think she can pull off modeling from a distance; she's only solid in closeup.

Once the decision has been made, Tyra gathers the girls together for the final announcement. The first name Tyra calls is Cassandra, followed by Nik, Kyle, Ashley, Bre, Kim, Sarah, Jayla, Coryn, Nicole, Diane and Lisa. The tension builds when Tyra reveals there is only one name left to be called, and the lucky girl is Ebony. Tyra comforts those who've been cut, while the other girls try to digest that they are moving on to the next level of the competition. Tyra welcomes the finalists with a group hug, and they are overwhelmed with emotion about having made it this far.

Now the real work begins. The models will soon move into their new digs and take on new challenges. Who will be eliminated first?
