EBONY'S DREAM COMES TO AN END
When the girls pair up for their weekly photo shoot, Tyra throws a twist into the mix: the partners will be competing against each other during the shoot rather than as a team. It's a tough competition, and after the strongest photos are chosen, two girls are left standing: Ebony, the 18-year-old student from Sylmar, California, and Diane, the 23-year-old criminal defense investigator from Orlando, Florida. In the end, Diane gets another chance to show her strengths, while Ebony is eliminated because her desire to model isn't enough to achieve her dreams.

THE FREAKOUT BEGINS

The day begins with alarms ringing bright and early, and Tyra Mail announces the inevitable makeovers. Cassandra isn't looking forward to it, since she sees herself as a natural beauty who doesn't need enhancement. The girls pile into the limo and arrive at the Louis Licari Salon in Beverly Hills, where Louis, Tyra and Jay welcome them. Tyra gives the rundown of what to expect: Nicole will get a curly weave, Coryn will go blonde, Diane will have wheat-colored hair, and Lisa will go darker. Lisa's disappointed, since she sees herself as a chameleon and wants something more drastic. Ebony is a tough case, but Tyra has decided to give her long braids, while Kyle will go from blonde to chocolate brown. Jayla gets extensions, Kim will go red but keep the length of her hair, and Sarah gets a symmetrical shoulder-length cut. Nik's hair is too dark for her complexion, so it will become "sun-kissed," while Bre's hair will be straightened. Lastly, Tyra tells Cassandra she's going short; as in Mia-Farrow-in-Rosemary's-Baby short. It takes only seconds for Cassandra to tear up and break down, even though Tyra assures her, "Your face is strong enough." Following their cuts and colors, the girls will be doing a photo shoot in which they'll demonstrate their new looks, plus a particular style Jay assigns them.

THE FREAKOUT CONTINUES
The makeovers begin, and Sarah comforts a devastated Cassandra. Lisa doesn't get it; she tells Cassandra, "If you've had your hair like that your whole life, then it needs to go." However, Ebony is happy to see Cassandra show some emotion. As the stylist chops, Cassandra sobs in the chair, and Jay reminds her that when she auditioned, she said how easy she would be for the stylists to work with. Her sad expression remains firmly in place as she gets color, while nearby, Jay tells Lisa they are going to try making her into a believable blonde to go with the new cut she loves so much. Kim is a little depressed over her new red color, since she enjoys her previous, more boyish look.

Bre figures they couldn't come up with a way to make her even more gorgeous with a drastic change, and Jay says her theme is "ghetto fabulous." Nicole loves her thicker, wavier hair; she'll be the 90s wide-eyed supermodel. Lisa's a supermodel with a twist, Sarah's Ralph Lauren chic, while Kim stays within her personal style as a femme boy. Jayla will be Yves St. Laurent chic, Diane is dressy casual, and Coryn is assigned a sophisticated look that suits her long blonde hair. Kyle loves her new dark hair, and she goes for Chanel with an edge, while Nik becomes bohemian chic. After thirteen hours sitting for her weave, Ebony is thrilled with her new style, and Jay wants her to be sophisticated with an edge. Though Cassandra isn't pleased with her hair, she gives it her best shot to become edgy with a mod look.

RODEO STYLE, AND THEN SOME
Back at the house, Tyra Mail arrives to let the girls know to be ready at 6:30 am. To the dismay of many, Cassandra's whining continues into the night and through the next day. First thing in the morning, she calls her boyfriend to complain about her hair, telling him, "You're going to hate it."

Later, everyone is driven to the Luxe hotel in Beverly Hills, where they gather on a rooftop to wait. Jaws drop when a bald man in a yellow polka dot dress comes dancing out to explain personal style. It's James St. James, personal stylist and author, and he's going to teach them about having a look and a point of view behind it. Their challenge: to take $500 and create the fiercest demonstration of the style Jay assigned them the day before, but taking it to the extreme. They have only an hour and a half to do it, and only the winner of the challenge will get to keep the outfit she creates. The race begins, and everyone scatters to various stores on Rodeo Drive to see what they can achieve in the short time allotted.

Upon their return to the roof of the hotel, James reveals his judging criteria: "How well your new outfit represents the new you, and what you were able to bring to each outfit." The girls step forward and give James their takes on their new styles, and for the most part, there's something a little off for everyone. However, while Lisa's style wasn't precisely demonstrated with her outfit, she makes a strong statement, and James declares her the winner. She chooses two friends from the group, Kim and Ebony, and the three select items the other girls are wearing as a reward.

At the mansion, Lisa gives some of the girls advice on how to pose better, but they see Lisa's attitude as snotty and arrogant. Lisa reasons, "I want to make the competition as fierce as possible. I want to know that I won with these girls trying their best." She continues to offer advice as Kim makes faces behind her back, and Kyle later says, "You would have thought Lisa would have gotten the vibe that we didn't want to talk to her."

SPIN YOUR PARTNER
For their next challenge, the girls are brought to a ranch and are told to pick a partner. Immediately after they do so, Jay reveals that their opposite will be the competition for the day. Since Kim and Kyle have paired up, Kim is unhappy, because she's "chosen the prettiest girl in the entire competition." The pairs will be modeling the same outfit in the same setup, and they won't be able to watch each other. Jay introduces the photographer, Craig de Cristo, and tells the girls they really have to "step up the pace and bring it."

The girls go through hair and makeup, and the first pair up is Nik and Bre, who pose on a fallen tree. Sarah and Coryn pose with a horse, and both do well despite the fact that the horse occasionally needs to do its business. Ebony and Lisa have paired up, and Ebony regrets her decision quickly as a confident Lisa messes with her mind before the shoot. Diane and Nicole are next, and Nicole wonders how they'll end up in a similar outfit despite their differences in size. Kim and Kyle end up in a top hat and trousers, and Jay later says, "It's really funny that the feminine girl can't pull off a suit, but the masculine one can and make it look feminine." Cassandra likes having Jayla as her partner, because "she kind of seemed a little weak at the last elimination." However, Cassandra has a tough time slouching in her poses, and Jay doesn't have an easy time working with her.

PAGEANTS VERSUS MODELING
The next day is the next big elimination, and some of the girls chill out in the hot tub the night before. Ebony reveals that she feels like the ugliest girl in the house sometimes, while Lisa leaves her modesty at the door and reminds the girls that she is going to win. Cassandra, on the other hand, thinks that if she goes home next, she'll return to the pageant circuit. "Pageants…help you develop more as a woman, where modeling is more of a career."

The big moment arrives, and Tyra welcomes the girls to the panel and introduces the judges, including James St. James as guest judge. Evaluations begin with Sarah and Coryn, and Miss J. gives Coryn a fashion violation ticket for not sticking with her more sophisticated look at panel. When their best photos are revealed, Sarah's hair goes over well, and J. thinks Coryn looks like Tyra. Kim and Kyle are next, and Tyra wants to see Kim straight on, while Nigel recommends that Kyle not try so hard. Cassandra and Jayla follow, and hair is again the topic of discussion. Tyra thinks Cassandra's hair isn't short enough, and Twiggy adds that she was stunned for a week after she first had her hair shorn into a pixie. Jayla's long weave doesn't work for her, so she'll end up with a shorter do if she survives the elimination. Tyra gives Jayla a tip about how to pose in the sun, because her eyes aren't quite what they ought to be in her photo. And though Cassandra felt better about her hair during the shoot, Nigel doesn't think it came off well.

Ebony and Lisa are next, and unfortunately for Ebony, her face is hidden in her shot. On the other hand, Lisa looks "crazy amazing" in hers, and she says she's been practicing her poses in the mirror since she was seven years old. When Nicole and Diane approach the panel, Nigel declares that Nicole's picture is the best that anyone has shown yet in the competition. Diane's doesn't sell the dress, and the panel feels she isn't comfortable showing her body, even though that's what got her this far. Nik and Bre follow, and though Bre's shot goes over well, Nik's pose is fantastic, showing the dress to its full potential.

TWIGGY: "I'M GHETTO"
Deliberations begin with Cassandra, and though Twiggy holds out hope for her, Nigel sees her as "a little lost." Jayla gets an A for effort, but she hasn't been able to produce great results so far. James sees something ungainly about Diane, and Tyra misses the attitude that she brought into the auditions. As for Nicole, Twiggy says, "This is a great photo. I think she's gorgeous." Kyle reminds J. of a socialite's daughter, and Twiggy comments that she was the first working class (or in Tyra's words, ghetto) model in England, as opposed to the traditional socialite model. Kim's photo doesn't impress the panel, whereas Lisa's photo does; J. comments that he "loves the fluidity of her body." Ebony doesn't fare so well; James says, "If this was her best picture, I would hate to see the rest of the roll." Coryn's photo seems to James more like RuPaul than Beyonce, while Sarah's photo looks like an ad campaign currently running in fashion magazines. Nigel doesn't think Bre is bringing her personality to her photos, while Nik's shape is spectacular in her photo.

The judging is completed, and when the girls return, Tyra reveals that from the six sets of photos, the judges have selected the stronger one. First is Cassandra, followed by Nicole, Coryn, Kim, Lisa and Nik. The tension ratchets up when Tyra continues naming those who will continue on in the competition, starting with Bre, Jayla, Sarah and Kyle. Ebony and Diane step forward, and Tyra tells Diane that the judges see a great face and body, but her assets have yet to be captured on film. Tyra also tells Ebony that she caught Tyra's attention at the casting call because of her drive to be a model, but that her desires might only be a dream instead of a reality. With that, Tyra reveals Diane's picture, and Ebony is eliminated.

The girls break down in tears and hug Ebony before she heads back to the house to pack up. "I'm sad, I'm heartbroken…. It's hard to hear that it's just a dream, but I'm taking this as a learning experience. They closed the door on me, but that just means that I'm going to go knock on twenty other ones till someone says yes. I'm definitely going to be okay…. I have a lot more steps to go."
