KYLE'S POTENTIAL RUNS OUT
There are two photo shoots this week: one more natural and raw in black and white, the other a sexy pin-up shot designed to bring out the girls' femininity. Though she struggles with her confidence, Kim nails both shoots, and Lisa does a fantastic job on a go-see for ELLEgirl. In the end, Bre, the 19-year-old student from Harlem, New York, and Kyle, the 19-year-old Dairy Queen Manager from Dexter, Michigan, stand before Tyra after deliberations, and Kyle is sent home because she's just not able to realize her potential as a model.
SHORT AND SWEET
Tyra arrives bright and early at the house to do a black and white photo shoot with the girls. To everyone's surprise, Tyra applies Vaseline to everyone's faces to give their skin and hair a glistening look. Each girl does her best to pose with intensity, and some using props while others go with simple, natural poses. When the shoot wraps, Tyra sums up the experience: "Sometimes a photo shoot is short and sweet and cute. It [doesn't] take all the hoopla."
Following an afternoon outing, Tyra Mail awaits, and Nicole stuns everyone when she reads it aloud with a scream: "You are going to Paris tomorrow!" Of course, it's a prank, and soon after, she reads the real Tyra Mail: "Are you a diamond in the rough?"
DOWN AND DIRTY
That night, the girls run wild in the house, and Kyle jokes that sometimes she and Kim feel like "the only two sane ones left." That night, they discuss what would happen if Kyle got the contract and had to move to New York. Kyle reveals that she's often followed her boyfriend wherever he went, and Kim says that she ought to be doing things for herself. Jayla, who overhears some of their conversation, doesn't have a high opinion of Kyle. "She does not seem like the kind of person that's very intelligent," she states bluntly.
The next day the girls arrive at Griffith Park for their challenge, where they meet with trainer Eric Viskovicz of Camp Technique. Eric explains that they'll be running an obstacle course to get a great workout. What he doesn't share is that the real point of the course is to get them good and dirty for the real challenge coming next. An excited Lisa bounces on her heels, anxious to get started, and she gets to go first. After heaving herself over a few barriers, she gets down and crawls under a low tarp in a pit of mud. She has no problem with the filth; "I love being dirty, so this is nothing to me." The other girls don't look so enthused, and many struggle in the mud pit. Kyle has a tough time with the dirt element, while Nicole complains about the entire course. Nik has the most trouble of them all when her pants continually fall down during her attempt. She laughs her way through it, though, and at the end, Eric announces that there's something waiting for them now that they've finished.
MUD IS THE NEW BLACK
In the limo, the girls are grossed out by the dirt; Nicole says, "This is nuts… I feel like a caged rat." Soon the limo pulls up to a building, and Bre enters to find three people waiting for her, including Brandon Holley, editor of ELLEgirl magazine, and two other staff members. It's a surprise go-see, and Bre must allow her personality to shine through despite her filthy state. She focuses on her attitude, and after her, Lisa shows off her big smile. During her turn, Nik reveals that she loves to have fun in strange ways (case in point: enjoying her mud bath earlier that day). Kyle plays up her small-town-girl persona, while Nicole focuses (again) on how gross it was to roll around in the mud. Jayla plays up her unusual taste in music, and Kim talks about her style and sexuality. Polaroids are taken of the girls, since "dirt is a great accessory," and later they gather to hear the results.
It's a tough call for Brandon, because all the girls had something to offer. Lisa had energy from the moment she walked in, Jayla seemed shy and stressed, and Bre was confident, though her confidence didn't reflect in her photographs. Nik needed more energy, while Nicole really played up her America's sweetheart look. Brandon recommends that Kim work on changing up her tough style, and that Kyle ought to work on her range of expressions.
When Brandon announces the winner, Lisa is overjoyed to receive the prize: a solo modeling lesson from industry expert Todd Hallman. Kim has a hard time hearing the news, because she feels that Lisa is the least pretty of the whole group. However, Kim's poses are not up to snuff, while Lisa's energy and expressions are striking.
WALKING THE LINE
The other girls head back to the house to wait for the shower, while Lisa heads out to meet with Todd for her lesson. In the house, both Kyle and Kim are disappointed because of their lackluster performances; Kim especially is frustrated because she's used to being the best. Meanwhile, Lisa puts on her best walk for Todd, and he gives her some pointers about being good to her skin and taking care of herself. She's happy for the information, hoping that it will give her the upper hand in the competition.
The next morning, the girls prepare for their challenge, which will involve walking the fine line between sexy and sleazy. They're doing a 40s style pin-up shoot for Ford Fusion, focused on being Grown and Sexy, and the winner of ANTM will have her photo used as a national ad for the Fusion. Kim is nervous because she's going to have to femme it up, while Jayla is confident that she has an edge with the shoot. Richard Dean serves as the photographer, and he gets started with Lisa. She is very aware of her body, and Jay is pleased with her performance. Jayla gains steam and she progresses, while during Nicole's shoot Jay asks, "Is she alive?" Nicole blames the corset for robbing her of breath, but pulls it off in the end. Kim works hard to stay soft, and Jay is surprised when she's able to give off femininity and sexiness so well. Nik struggles at the beginning of her shoot, which disappoints her because her goal is to do well during the entire thing. When Kyle heads out to have her pictures taken, Nik is unnerved because she's so sexy, while Jayla doesn't see enough depth in Kyle to consider her a threat. Bre has a tough time with the tight corset, and Richard feels she isn't able to sustain her focus.
Once they get home to find Tyra Mail announcing an elimination the following day, Lisa decides it's time to get out and have a good time. The girls head to Venice Cantina for a night of dancing, drinking and chilling out. The pressure is on, especially for Kim, Kyle and Nik, all of whom are anxious about what will happen next.
SEXY SHINES THROUGH
The big moment arrives, and the girls file in to meet the judges, including guest judge Richard Dean. Tyra announces their panel challenge: to create an incredibly sexy ensemble in just three minutes. Like a shot, the girls are off, throwing together outfits from what little they have to choose from. Lisa ends up in a white singlet and jeans, allowing her own sexiness to shine through, and both Twiggy and Nigel love it. Nicole chooses a flowy, short dress and sandals, which neither J. nor Tyra appreciate. Bre wears a simple tank and boxers, because her boyfriend thinks a natural look is sexy. Kyle wears a tee shirt and short skirt; Nigel thinks that her outfit doesn't suit her body. Of all of the girls, Jayla has the most fun with her ensemble, arriving in a bikini top and jeans. Nik chooses a little black dress, and though she doesn't sell it at the beginning, she exudes a little more attitude as she takes her criticism. When Kim selects a short skirt and casual tennis shoes, Nigel loves the fantasy element, and Twiggy thinks the whole thing works wonderfully.
Now the girls get to see the results of Tyra's early morning photo shoot as well as their Fusion pictures. Lisa is up first, and everyone loves her intense, over the shoulder close-up, as well as her sexy shot on the car. Bre is next, and she's stunned when a fantastic natural shot comes up. She didn't expect to be on the same level as the other girls, and Richard believes this moment could be her epiphany. However, the judges disagree about the quality of her Fusion shot. Jayla's natural shot draws attention to her tense pinky, while her car photo doesn't seem to draw much attention one way or the other. Nik follows, and her natural photo inspires the words "raw" and "sexy" from Twiggy. However, since she has a low percentage of body fat, her Fusion shot isn't quite as curvaceous as the judges would like. Tyra wanted more variation to work with during Nicole's natural shoot, and though Nigel isn't impressed with her Fusion photo, Richard felt he had many expressions to choose from. Kyle's natural shot is just that--natural; she doesn't have to expend any effort to pull off an intense shot. For her pin-up shot, her expression is vacant, though her figure is beautiful. Lastly, Kim's natural shot is still riding what J. calls "the gender-bender bus," but she impresses upon the judges that she's trying to bring out her feminine side. In her pin-up, Tyra reveals that she was amazed by the gorgeous shots Kim turned out. Twiggy hardly recognizes her, and J. believes she's finally realizing the raw talent the judges knew she had from the beginning.
THE JUDGING GETS TOUGHER
Deliberations begin with Kim, and Nigel sees this week as a turning point for her, while Richard thinks she's "hot, hot, hot, hot." J. is "up and down" with Kyle; he loves her natural shot, but her expression is just not translating properly to the rest of the judges. Nik has grown on Twiggy, but Nigel feels her lack of self-confidence is something she's going to have to change. Jayla's photos are both positively received, and Richard recognizes something in her that he doesn't see in any of the others: drive. He also sees Nicole as having the look of a model, while her personality remains a problem when in front of the judges. Bre has spunk even though her photos aren't perfect; her raspy voice and emotion touch Tyra's heart. Nigel sees Lisa as an anomaly--she's a little bit of everything. In her natural shot, she can look pretty while furrowing her brow, which is tough for anyone.
The moment arrives to find out who is still in the running to become America's Next Top Model, and the first name to be called is Kim. Lisa follows, along with Nik, Jayla and Nicole. Kyle and Bre are the only two remaining, and they step forward. Tyra tells Bre that though she comes to the competition with a wealth of fashion knowledge, she might only be right for commercial modeling. To Kyle, Tyra says that the judges recognize her potential, but they also see a small-town, pretty girl unable to transform herself. With that, Tyra gives Bre her photo, and Kyle breaks down in tears as she hugs the other girls.
Kyle takes the news hard, weeping as she packs her things. "I really thought that I was going to stay. I know I have all the potential in the world; I just didn't know how to use it. I definitely thought I was going to go farther than this. And it hurts my feelings a lot that they didn't see that I was improving…What am I going to do when I go home now?"
