CORYN'S SADNESS SENDS HER HOME
This week's challenges involve a triple whammy: doing a commercial shoot, a photo shoot and an on-camera interview all in one day. While some of the girls excel despite lower expectations, both Coryn, the 19-year-old retail clerk from Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Nik, the 21-year-old office coordinator from Atlanta, Georgia, have a tough time handling the pressure. When they end up standing before Tyra and the panel at judging, Coryn is eliminated because her sadness would hold her back in the world of modeling.
BUBBLES, BUBBLES, EVERYWHERE
Following Diane's elimination, Nik deals with her sadness over losing her closest friend in the house. "I feel really vulnerable. I don't want to let anyone in--I don't want to be hurt. The only person I have is myself." Meanwhile, Jayla is happy that the numbers are dwindling in the house; she'll claw her way to the top if she has to. The rest of the girls settle in for an evening in the hot tub, and Lisa adds some serious bubbles to the water as the rest of the girls watch her bizarre antics. Kyle later comments, "There's something weird about Lisa, and I can't really figure out what it is." Bre is concerned with Lisa's drinking, while Kim is annoyed that she's always trying to be the center of attention.
Jay arrives the next morning with an exceptional guest for the girls to meet: legendary model Iman, who has some tips to share about achieving flawless skin. With basic household ingredients like lime, avocado, tomatoes, lemons and honey, skin tone can be improved, even though some of the girls are grossed out by their homegrown moisturizers.
HONEY, BANANA AND TOMATO?
Jay reveals the next challenge: each girl will serve as a spokesperson for a honey banana firming mask during a mock talk show segment. In their interview, the girls will have to choose key talking points from a list to sell their product on behalf of the client.
Soon the girls arrive at a studio to be interviewed by comedian Chris Spencer for three minute segments. Lisa is convinced that she's going to nail the interview, concentrating hard and memorizing her lines as the other girls chat in the green room. Once they get started, Chris is bored by Jayla, and Coryn makes zero impression on him. Bre doesn't get a chance to mention any of the product ingredients during her interview, and Chris busts Kim for cheating--she wrote the product points on her hand. Chris completely sidetracks Nik with his commentary, while Kyle sells the heck out of the product, rattling off five points in the short interview. Lisa starts out positively, but ends up incorrectly listing some of the ingredients.
In the end, Kyle is the clear winner, and she chooses Nicole to receive the winning prize as well. Turns out that they'll be part of VH-1's "The Fabulous Life of… Today's Hottest Supermodels," announcing the top five supermodels of all time. After the challenge ends, the girls mill around backstage, where the conflict between Coryn and Lisa comes to a head. Lisa attacks Coryn for always talking trash about her, while Coryn retorts by asking Lisa to get out of her face. Even when Coryn walks away from the argument, Lisa follows her and insists that she break all ties with her, and Coryn assures her she's trying to do just that. When Lisa continues, "You're basically presenting yourself like a moron," Coryn calls her an alcoholic bitch. Her comment is met with a stunned silence from all corners.
HIGH SCHOOL REVISITED
On the way home, Lisa is saddened to realize that she's surrounded by people who don't like her, while Nik pulls back from the situation because it's hard for her to bear witness to the nastiness going on around her. That night, Jayla and Nicole curl up for a quick meal to talk over the situation, and both of them blame Lisa for setting herself up for a fall. "She thinks she knows it all, which is a problem… She really has to get over that." Jayla adds, "It is so like high school here."
The next morning, Kevin Mock of "The Fabulous Life of…" arrives to prep Nicole and Kyle for their hostess duties. As the girls shoot their footage right inside the house, the situation is too much for a jealous Lisa. "I wish I had won that challenge," Lisa complains to Nik, and she practices Kyle and Nicole's lines in her room. Soon Kevin interrupts her, asking for some quiet time for the crew to take care of some details. "I know it's hard," he tells her, "but be quiet for thirty seconds." Even that doesn't stop Lisa, who rolls her eyes, and later says, "I'm so disgusted," when Kevin praises Kyle's and Nicole's performances.
The girls have noticed that Lisa's drinking is causing problems for her, and they aren't happy when she uncorks a fresh bottle of wine. That night, Lisa falls asleep buzzed and alone on a lounge chair by the pool. Kim comments that she's been drunk all day, and Bre and Nik decide to go outside to check on her. After they bring her in, Lisa calls her boyfriend and breaks down in tears. Bre says, "Lisa is very confident, but as much confidence she has, she's just taken in every punch, every ball thrown her way. All the arguments, all the criticism, she's just eating it, and it's eating away at her now… Nobody really knows how to help her though."
VICES 'R US
Tyra arrives the next morning to talk to the girls about the vices they're dealing with in the house. After she asks how many of them smoke, she reveals that 98% of models smoke or have smoked. The more surprising fact: a model's career time can be cut in half by the habit. When Tyra asks about alcohol, Lisa admits she drinks, though she says only that a glass of wine calms and relaxes her. Kyle is angered by Lisa's avoidance, knowing that she was lying to Tyra's face.
At 8:00 the next morning, the girls arrive at a studio for a hectic day: a commercial shoot for Secret Platinum Clear Gel, a photo shoot and press interview with Entertainment Tonight's Ryan Devlin. Also, each of the girls must reveal a secret of their own during the commercial. First up is Lisa, who nails her shoot with a hint of vulnerability. Jayla is surprised; she expected Lisa to be off her game. The shoots progress for the girls, until Coryn goes in for hers. As soon as she makes the tiniest of errors, she beats herself up, but Jay manages to bring her spirits up and she conquers the commercial.
Nik is concerned that she and Jayla share the same secret for the commercial, but is consoled by the fact that hers is slightly different from Jayla's. That is, until during the filming, when Jayla shamelessly steals Nik's secret altogether. Nik is petrified before her shoot, and she makes the decision not to change her secret. "This is why I don't want to get close to a lot of the girls, because they hurt you." Nik's nerves take control and she stumbles through her commercial, and unfortunately, her anxiety continues into the photo shoot and interview. She's lost her confidence, and she isn't looking forward to panel this week.
After the shoot, Jayla confides in Lisa that she is over the fact that Nik is giving her the cold shoulder. Lisa responds by bringing up the fact that Jayla stole Nik's secret during the commercial shoot, but Jayla makes no apologies. Instead, in confessional she rails against Nik, and is convinced that if they both stay in the house, "Something big is going to go down. Mark my words--it'll happen."
NIK HOLDS BACK
The next day at panel, Tyra introduces the judges, including guest judge Bill Heuberger, the director of the commercial shoot. She also reveals her own secret: the girl with the best photo will see her image as an ad for Secret Platinum Clear Gel in next week's People.
Evaluations begin with Nicole's shoot--Nigel sees her as a diamond in the rough. Although her interview didn't go so well, her photo is beautiful. Jayla managed to nail her commercial and interview, though there's disagreement on panel over her photo: Twiggy and J. love it, but Nigel can't connect to it. Coryn follows, and while her melancholy air affected her commercial and interview, her photo has humor and personality. Kyle's commercial shoot included some over-acting, but her photo is well received (by Twiggy, anyway) and her personality came through during her interview. Bre is next, and her commercial shoot gets applause out of the judges, who love her delivery. Her interview was good as well, but her photo is less than stellar. Kim's slouch irritates J. in the commercial shoot, but Nigel likes the fact that although there's something off about her, it works. In her interview, she created an anecdote, which Tyra approves of, and despite the fact that they had to retouch her photo, her shot is great. Lisa ends up with a ten out of ten from Nigel on all fronts. Her commercial brings tears to Tyra's eyes, she steered a controversial question during her interview back on track and she nails a gorgeous photo. Nik is last, and in her commercial she looks stiff and uncomfortable. In her interview she was personable enough, and while her photo is almost great, her shoe appears to be going into her head in the pose. Tyra tells Nik that her film was the worst of the day, and when Nik admits there was drama going on behind the scenes, she won't reveal the real issue. "Nik, you are a fortress," Nigel says.
NICOLE CLEANS UP
Deliberations begin with Jayla; Nigel isn't convinced she's great, but Tyra loves her photo. The judges argue over Nik's rough performance, and Bill thinks that although she's not pretty, she's sexy. J. thinks Nicole is lovely but not so great in person, while Kyle is "a bit ordinary" for Twiggy. In Nigel's eyes, Kim leaves the viewer wanting more, while Coryn's sadness appeals to Bill and Bre looks bored in her photo. As for Lisa, J. likes her interview performance, and Nigel comments again that she leaves the viewer wanting more, but that he also can't stand her.
The verdict is in, and Tyra calls Lisa's name first, because she excelled during her challenges. Unfortunately, since majority ruled over which photo would be selected as the Secret ad, she is passed over. Jayla and Kim follow, and Nicole, is overjoyed to find out her photo has been chosen as the ad. Next called are Kyle and Bre, leaving Coryn and Nik to step forward. Coryn is radiant as she stands before Tyra, but her sadness would undoubtedly hold her back in the real world of modeling. Nik's photo didn't rock, and in her interview she screwed up by admitting to being uncomfortable in front of the camera. In the end, Tyra gives Nik another chance, and Coryn embraces everyone before she heads back to the house to pack.
Oddly, Coryn is glowing as she gives her final words. "It's just a load off my shoulders; I feel like I can breathe again. It's my time to go. There are other things out there for me--my life is going to change."
