PRETTY DOESN'T CUT IT: ASHLEY FIRST OUT
After a tour of Los Angeles, the girls get down to business with their first public runway show at a party hosted by Life & Style magazine. Later, when they take on their first photo shoot, posing as super heroes while being suspended from a high wire, some girls struggle with their airborne poses. In the end, Ashley , the 22-year-old boutique buyer from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Sarah , the 18-year-old fragrance counter representative from Boonville, Missouri, are up for elimination, and Ashley is sent home because it takes more than just a pretty face to be a Top Model.

When the girls are sent to the steps of City Hall in Beverly Hills, they don't know exactly what to expect. But Jay and J. soon arrive with a surprise: they're about to be driven around the stars' neighborhoods in Beverly Hills on a double-decker bus, accompanied by tour guide Robin Leach of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."

CHAMPAGNE WISHES AND CAVIAR DREAMS
To toast the occasion, Robin hands out bottles of apple cider. When Lisa immediately swigs right from the bottle, Cassandra manages to hold her tongue, though she expects classier behavior from her fellow participants. The girls make a toast to the future Top Model, and the tour gets underway.

First stop: Rodeo Drive, lined with boutiques from every major designer in the world, followed by a drive through LA's most affluent neighborhoods. Small-town Sarah is astounded, and she's already having a blast. The best news comes at the end of the tour, when the bus drives up to a spectacular mansion. To the girls' shock, Robin holds up a key and announces, "It's the home of America's Next Top Model!"

BLING IT ON
The girls scream in delight as they race through the extraordinary set up, making claims on beds and exploring the differently themed rooms: Bling it On, filled with jewelry; Bag Ladies, stocked with handbags, Eau de Model, with perfume on the shelves; and Stiletto Salon, with high heels everywhere.

Once everyone has moved in, some of the girls curiously question Kim about her sexuality. Kim is in an open relationship with her girlfriend, but doesn't expect to hook up with anyone while participating in the competition. Sarah jokingly says, "I'll make out with Kim," and says later that while she hasn't met any lesbians in the past, she's open to everything.

The next morning, Cassandra is already getting on some of the girls' nerves. Kyle comments, "To me, Cassandra seems that she feels that she's better than everyone else." Nicole calls her a control freak, while Lisa sees her as spoiled, and believes that quality will be her weakness.

FEAR AND LOATHING
Kyle reads the first Tyra Mail aloud: "Do you have high self-esteem? How much are you worth? Be ready at 4PM." The girls prep for whatever the challenge might be, and once they arrive, Jay explains the deal: they'll attend a Hollywood event, complete with red carpet, for a party thrown by Life & Style . There's a runway too; the girls will be walking in a show. Sarah is both thrilled and terrified, knowing she needs help with her walk and coordination.

Backstage, Jay reveals that the girls will have to do their own makeup, but they'll have help dressing when the time arrives. When it comes to makeup, Bre is a little lost, so she stays with what she knows, while Kim doesn't have a clue what to do. No one offers to help, including Kim's roommate and pal, Ashley. Ebony finally lends a hand, but Ashley has no regrets about her actions.

On stage, Jay introduces hip-hop icon Nate Dogg, who will serve as an MC for the night. After that, it's time to start the show, and Nate gives each girl a theme for her walk, starting with Ashley, who demonstrates "sensual." Bre follows with "quirky," Cassandra with "posh," Coryn with "regal," Jayla with "spunky," Ebony with "avant-garde," Nik with "cutting edge," Kim with "sassy," Lisa with "feisty," Nicole with "ferocious," Kyle with "shifty" and Sarah with "glitzy." Unfortunately, Sarah's prediction comes true, and she nearly wipes out on the runway.

MODELS GONE WILD
The energy backstage is frenetic as everyone changes clothes for their second walk, and Lisa revels in the chaos. In the end, Jay delivers (with a smile) the news that "that was the absolute worst fashion show I've ever done, but good try, though." In the limo on the way home, Sarah is able to put her tough night behind her when Kim calls her beautiful. Impulsively, she leaps across some seats and plants a kiss on Kim, as the other girls scream riotously in the background. A few of the girls are surprised, and Kim inspires laughs all around when she announces," One down, eleven to go."

As Ebony and Lisa decompress at the end of the night, they discuss one girl who just doesn't seem to fit in: Cassandra. Ebony says succinctly, "Cassandra's a weirdo." Lisa sees her as robotic, and when she asks Cassandra what her deal is, Cassandra replies, "You know how sociopaths don't feel emotion and that's why they can kill people without ever feeling bad about it? Only I never killed anybody." Talk about stopping the conversation. Cassandra explains later that it's not as though she doesn't want to share her feelings, but she doesn't consider herself an emotional person.

Tyra Mail arrives: "It's a bird, it's a plane; no, it's a Top Model in the making." The next morning the girls prep for their first photo shoot, and Jay greets them bright and early to announce the theme: super hero models. Michael Ruiz will be shooting the photos, and the girls waste no time getting into hair and makeup.

ARE YOU A SUPER HERO?
Kim is up first, and she has a tough time staying at a proper angle to act as though she's "swooping down on an enemy." He's not impressed. Neither is Ashley, who tells Kim, "You sucked real bad," even though it's clear Kim knows she didn't excel in her shoot. Ashley is next, and Jay emphasizes that she has to lengthen her neck, over and over. Bre works it, but Jay cracks up at a couple of her poses. Nik isn't too up on the superhero trend, but Jay thinks she got her groove on well. Kyle learns as she goes, and Diane does the same, but Lisa nails it immediately. Jay says, "You are my Matrix fantasy!" Afraid of heights, Coryn is nervous about being on the harness, but she's able to conquer it and stays focused.

Cassandra attacks her poses fiercely, and Jay is surprised; he expected something safer from the pageant queen. Nicole goes for it with intensity, and Ebony is raring to go from her first shot on. Sarah feels that she looks foolish during her shoot, unlike Jayla, who is able to bring power to her expression even though she doesn't love her outfit.

DREAD SETS IN
As soon as the girls arrive home, Tyra Mail reveals that at next day's panel, someone will be eliminated. The mood turns darker as they consider who it might be. Some think Sarah is next because of her multiple falls on the runway, while Sarah and Kim each think they have a shot at being eliminated.

THE FIRST EVALUATION…
The first official panel begins as the girls gather in front of the judges, and Tyra reveals the fabulous prizes the winner will receive: an opportunity to be managed by Ford Models, a $100,000 contract with cosmetics giant CoverGirl and a fashion spread in Elle magazine. In addition, the winner will be featured on the cover of ELLEgirl magazine alongside Tyra. The judges emerge one by one, including Nigel Barker, noted fashion photographer, and J. Alexander, runway expert. Finally, many of the girls gasp in surprise and awe when new judge Twiggy is introduced; she was the first teenage supermodel in the 60s.

Without further ado, Tyra begins the evaluations with Lisa, whose walk Nigel and Twiggy both appreciate, but J. has a few things to fix. For her superhero shoot, Tyra says, "Wow," and Nigel adds, "You own this picture." Nicole is next, and Twiggy quite likes her walk (unlike J.), but in her photo, she looks a bit wider than she really is. Kyle has a sexy walk, but in her photo, she's not as confident as she ought to appear, and Bre's walk divides Twiggy and Nigel's opinions. Kim is nervous about her evaluation, but Tyra tells her to simply be herself when walking the runway. Nigel and Twiggy again disagree about her photo, since nothing about it works for Nigel, but Twiggy sees something similar to one of her own photos. Tyra calls attention to the fact that Ebony loves to look over her shoulder when she poses on the runway, but unfortunately, her photo just doesn't work.

Diane has the same problem in both her walk and her photo: her face is fierce, but she needs better body awareness. Ashley evaluates her own walk as too slow, but she doesn't look happy when the judges criticize her photo. Though Nik tends to sway her head during her walk, she nails a brilliant photo, while neither Coryn's walk nor her photo make much of an impression. Jayla's walk definitely needs some work from Miss J, while her photo gets mixed reviews from Twiggy (loves the face) and Tyra (not so much). Cassandra has what Nigel calls a "prom walk," and she captures a great photo, much to Tyra's surprise. Sarah is last, and Nigel encourages her to work on her fall recovery; it's clear that she isn't happy on the runway. However, in her close-up photo, she looks fantastic.

…AND DELIBERATION
It's time for deliberations. Nigel feels Cassandra is missing something, Twiggy sees Ebony as beautiful but not modelesque, and Tyra thinks Coryn's muscle tone is a little too intense. Though Sarah stumbled on the runway and lost confidence, Nigel thinks her face is amazing, and he wants to see it in pictures again. Nik is one to look out for, while Ashley just doesn't have the "magic ingredient" for Twiggy. Nigel sees Lisa as a diamond in the rough, and Diane as someone with a fantastic face. Twiggy doesn't love Kim's face in her photo while Nigel likes her androgyny, and Twiggy sees Kyle as pretty though unexceptional. Jayla is a bit all over the place but has something to offer, while Nigel wonders if Nicole is versatile enough to stay in the competition. Bre's walk is a topic of contention; Twiggy sees it as "a horse gone wrong."

The big moment comes, and the girls file back into the room. Tyra announces who will advance, starting with Nik, Lisa, Cassandra, Diane, Jayla, Kyle, Bre, Ebony, Coryn, Nicole, and finally Kim. Sarah and Ashley are left standing, and they step forward. Tyra tells Sarah that she doesn't have to be perfect, but she needs to stay stronger to be able to handle the competition, while she tells Ashley that being pretty isn't enough to be a top model. Finally, she hands a tearful Sarah her picture, and Ashley is eliminated.

As she packs her bags, Ashley fights back tears, saying, "You know, to be crushed, it sucks, and to be crushed first, it sucks. If I try harder, I wonder what's going to happen now. What will happen on my second casting call if this is what happened on my first? There can only be one winner anyway. This is how it was supposed to be."
