During Alexander's siege of Tyre, a large flying shield, leadng a triangular formation of four smaller shields, circled over Tyre while thousands of soldiers on both sides watched in amazement.
There was a sighting by three crew members on the USS Supply 300 miles west of San Francisco, reported by Lt. Frank Schofield, later to become Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Battle Fleet. Schofield wrote of three bright red egg-shaped and circular objects flying in echelon formation that approached beneath the cloud layer, then changed course and "soared" above the clouds, departing directly away from the earth after two to three minutes. The largest had an apparent size of about six suns.

2nd Lt. E.J. Marlow, Twelve grey objects from cigar to egg-shaped, varied their formation from elliptical -> wavy line -> scattered -> straight line -> trail formation.
Sharply-defined, egg-shaped UFO. Straight, multiclored rays extended backward in a V-formation from the front of the object.
Six or eight red balls, arranged in a rectangular formation, became two objects with lights by the end of the 15 minute sighting.
Philip Parker. Their plane was flying at about 1,000 feet as they circled the lake near the McGuire Nuclear Station, when they noticed three "bright objects" to their right. Pilot Mayhew gave his plane full throttle and they rose barely high enough to escape the UFOs, which were flying in formation 100 feet below them. Unnerved, as he was Parker was able to take one photograph of the three circular UFOs above Lake Norman.

Several dozen white UFOs appeared above the city, moving at speeds of up to approximately 840 miles per hour. The objects were described as "white dots" and in some cases left a trail behind. The objects sometimes appeared in formations including V shapes and diamonds. Around noontime, two formations of such objects met in the sky above Vatican City, formed a "St. Andrew's Cross" (similar to the pattern of bars on the Amerian Confederate flag used during the Civil War), then altered formation to assume a more conventional X shape before dividing into curved formations and moving apart. A few minutes later, the objects returned in various formations, though this time they were not over the Vatican.
Private pilot reports three arrow-shaped objects flying in formation and disappearing at high speed.
