I was away at an International Airfare training class held by PanAm Airlines. My instructor who had been with PanAm for quite a few years shared this story of her co-worker with us. She was working at the New York JFK airport in the middle of a horrible snowstorm. The airlines were canceling almost every flight, and the lines for the ticketing counters were a mile long. A man came up to her, slammed his ticket on the counter and said "I need to be in LA tonight and I want to know what you're going to do about it." Without a flinch, she said "Sir, the flights have been cancelled due to weather so there isn't anything I can do, but let me call someone who might be able to help you." She proceeded to pick up the phone and dial. "Hello, God?" The man calmed down, smiled and said, "I get the message."

A secretary called me to get information for her boss who was traveling to somewhere in Africa in the next couple of months. After giving her flight information, I advised her that he would need both a current passport and visa. I also recommended that if he did not have a passport that he apply for one immediately so that there would be time to get the visa. She called back a few minutes later to ask me if he really needed a visa since he had an American Express card.

I have once been asked if the Berlin Wall is part of the Chinese Wall?

One of my clients was traveling to Frankfurt, Germany. The had a very early return flight and wanted to stay at the hotel that was right next to the Frankfurt airport. He said it was a Hilton, Hyatt or one of those "H" hotels. I searched and searched in the computer for an "H" hotel near the airport and was coming up empty. I looked in the hotel book to see the only airport hotel that was that close to the airport was a Sheraton. "Yeah, that's it!" he explained. I told him, "But Sheraton doesn't start with an H." "Sure it does," he replied, "The S is silent"

We had a client who was pregnant and was planning to travel to Europe a couple of months after her baby was born. She called our office saying that she wanted to save time and asked if she could apply for a passport for her unborn child! I don't know what she expected to use as the passport picture, maybe her ultrasound?

The account we handled in our agency made numerous flights from Minneapolis to Tokyo. We had one man call to reserve his flight in business class on the Northwest nonstop and had requested his favorite seat 85J, which was the first row aisle in the upper deck. Our agent explained to him that seat 85J was already taken and offered him another aisle seat in the upper deck, or an aisle bulkhead in the lower deck. The man became very upset saying that with all the business he did with this airline, they should bump the other person out of that seat and give it to him. When we explained to him that the airlines did not work that way, he wanted us to call the airline to get the name and phone number of the person who was holding that seat so "HE" could called them and talk them out of it!
