Editorial Calandryll on Banning February 16, 2001
By: Mystery
In the ongoing debate about Banning from MMORPGs in the various forums across this great Cyberscape that we call the....sheesh, I sicken myself sometimes.

Anyway, Calandryll posted a great essay on Banning over on Lum the Mad today. Here's a sample of what he had to say:

Just because some players (and remember, bug abusers and exploiters represent a very small minority of players) will abuse bugs does not mean in any way that we should allow it. We don’t catch them all, but show me any system that catches every offender. Again, simply because we may not be able to catch every offender does not mean we should not try...and in so trying, catch as many as we can.

You can read the rest of the essay here.

Nexus: The KotWinds Changes to Nexus February 16, 2001
By: Mystery
Icsmith, over at Gameznet scooped an update from Nexon, publishers of Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds:

Nexon's game Nexus: Kingdom of the Winds encourages further, deeper interaction between the players and the environment around them, more than ever before! Players are able to name the plants and wildlife around them with their own unique names, and give them distinctive properties. As a recent and significant example, on Wednesday, a large player-sponsored update to plant and animal life changed the nature of the game and nature IN the game...

This current addition was enabled by the game's properties system that allows players to communicate desired changes to the Nexus: TK team. Expanding further on this, players are able to not suggest names for the items, but the objects they name can become items that players can collect and use for a wide variety of uses -- such as to give to a fellow game player on a birthday, or a special someone on an anniversary. Experience the ever-changing world that you can effect by taking advantage of the extended trial period offered by Nexus: Kingdom of the Winds, by going to http://www.nexustk.com. We hope to see you there, where you can now make a difference in the world around you!

The Dark Age of Camelot First Impressions, Part 3 February 16, 2001
By: Mystery
In Part 3 of their series First Impressions series on DAoC, RPG Vault delves into some juicier subjects regarding game interaction:

Although it's not final, the death system in Dark Age of Camelot is rather interesting. Normally, it involves a loss of experience, the amount of which can be reduced by returning to the site of your death. The number of locations where you can resurrect is limited, so depending on how far you are from the spot of your death, this can take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. There is also a relatively minor statistical penalty that can be bought back for cash from certain NPCs, and another that dissipates after a couple of minutes. The latter is apparently intended to discourage players from dying and immediately dashing back into battle. It's also possible to be resurrected where you died by a Cleric. In this case, the experience penalty is reduced and one of the stat loss penalties is eliminated. You also save whatever time it would have taken to return to where you died.

EverQuest Bad McQuaid February 16, 2001
By: Mystery
Of all places, the LA Times has just posted a piece on Brad McQuaid and EQ in general. Here's a sample of what they had to say:

Q: What makes "EverQuest" so compelling?
A: "EverQuest" has three primary areas of focus: character development, community building and an immersive world. Players build up their characters over time, acquiring experience, knowledge and possessions. And because of the social and interdependent nature of the game, players also develop relationships with other people. Both of these aspects create an ownership that compels players to keep playing over the long term, all the while exploring and experiencing a very immersive 3-D world.

C3k announced yesterday that they would allow folks to host their own MODs of the Alpha build of the C3k product. In reward to creating and managing your own world (including creating your own graphics, models, and textures that don't suck wind so badly even I can make fun of them), you get free access to the C3k world! Woo!

GameSpyDaily was nice enough to host the Press Release for this wonder of wonders.

Editorial MMORPG Explosion February 16, 2001
By: Mystery
RPG Planet has just written a piece asking the question that we all need to ask: What's the market cap on Massively Multiplayer titles. Games like Diablo II did well because the Multiplayer component wasn't required in order to play. Since the MM titles do require this feature, is there a point where the market simply can't handle more MM titles?

You can read the article for yourself here.
