Asheron's Call Blues Brings it In February 26, 2001
By: Mystery
On the heels of the recent suggestion that there was a new version of AC in development, Bluesnews caught a Turbine press release that confirms it all:

Westwood, Mass. - February 26, 2001- Turbine Entertainment Software, a leading developer of Internet-based massively multi-player (MMP) PC and video games, has announced that it has signed a contract with Microsoft to produce a sequel to the highly successful massively multiplayer RPG, Asheron's Call.

"We're delighted to announce this news," exclaimed Production Director, David Bowman. "Not a day goes by where I'm not asked whether or not we're working on it. It's a relief to finally say 'Yes, we are in production on a sequel to Asheron's Call!'" At this time, Microsoft and Turbine have not announced a potential release date or final name for the title.

With development well underway, Turbine has continued hiring artists, designers, and programmers to contribute to the sequel in addition to continuing content being developed for the original Asheron's Call. "We're expanding operations to handle these projects, both in terms of employees and our facilities," said Bowman. "Because of the resources needed to create MMP games like Asheron's Call, we've been looking at new facilities to accommodate our growth. Recently, we decided on a nearby site for our new headquarters and should be settled in by early March."

Turbine will be showing The Turbine Engine 2.0 (TTE2.0) - the core client and server tech behind the sequel to Asheron's Call - at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose this March. "It's the first time we've felt comfortable showing the technology powering our next generation of games to potential competitors," said Michael Steele, Tech VP. "In private showings to other game developers, the demonstration of the engine's power and flexibility have literally taken their breath away."

Previews Anarchy Online February 26, 2001
By: Mystery
PC IGN has a new preview of Anarchy Online up. Here's a sample of what you can find:

But endless combat isn't the only way to progress through AO. Even at the beta stage, Anarchy Online includes a limitless number of randomly generated quests that can be found at a task-generating booth in town. I've already been on some low-level quests that include such things as delivering books, nano-augmentations, and even assassinating someone with a sacrificial krys knife. The quest system works by not only giving you a task, but also a key for a particular building in the city. Once you enter said building, the server creates a randomly generated interior where the quest takes place. All in all it's pretty interesting stuff and, unlike EverQuest, you can get some pretty rewarding quests early on in the game that don't take all that much time.

Charr: The Grimm Fate Another Cam Interview February 26, 2001
By: Mystery
Another excellent interview with Stephen Cam, this time with RPG Vault, took place last week. Stephen had a lot more to say this time around:

Players will receive one Combat Companion (CoComp) who travels around the world with them at all times. They can be upgraded and will grow, and physically change, as they level (they don't steal exp. from you - they possess their own experience tables). All races attract different companions as well. The Risen (Undead) will attract Ghouls, Wraith, etc.; Humans and Orcs will attract mechanical CoComps; Elves will attract animal-based CoComps and so on. When your reputation reaches "heroic proportions" the Ultimate CoComp will show-up at your Stronghold. I'm not going to give too much away about the "Heroic CoComps" but I'll send some images soon of the "Meat Machine" - the Uber Human/Orc Companion!

You can read some more of this interview, along with some new concept art, here.

Charr: The Grimm Fate Stephen Cam Interview February 26, 2001
By: Mystery
Although this interview took place last month, it's interesting reading nonetheless. Corpnews sat down the Stephen Cam, CEO for Waggaworld, the makers of Waggaworld Online and Charr: TGF. Here's a sample:

One of the most unique features of Charr is its setting. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic period of the planets history. The people of Charr (who consist of races such as Elves, Commoners, Orcs, Fairies, Giants…etc) had reached the pinnacle of their technological success when the world was invaded by an aberrant species named The Grimm. Three hundred years later, the survivors of the invasion have begun to rebuild the world and “The Brotherhood of Fate” has declared a “Holy War” to abolish The Grimm presence from the planet. The races have reverted back to a medieval style existence where they don plated armor and wield melee weapons. They have also rediscovered the “Essence of Magic” - the lost Arcane disciplines that were abdicated in favor of technology. Technology is also being re-acquired from “The Wastes” and for the first time the people can take a stand against The Grimm.

You can catch the full interview here.

By: Mystery
Earwin, over on Camelot Vault has something to say about the Irish Mythology in DAoC. Out of all of it, however, he doesn't mention the bothersome tendancy for development artists to paint a picture of the Sidhe drinking in some pub and getting into a fistfight. Ah, well, you can read the article for yourself.

EverQuest Big EQLizer Update February 26, 2001

Fallen Age Interview with Savant February 26, 2001
By: Mystery
"I Get Around" must be Savant's themesong. This week, he appear's over at MMO.GameZNet in an interview with JC. Quotage:

Fallen Age is the game that gamer's want. It's a unique combination of genre's. A sci-fi fantasy hybrid that takes Massive Multiplayer Online Games to the next level. It's an RPG, a TBS, an RTS, and one heck of a great game! (In my humble opinion, of course)

You can catch the rest of the interview here.

Star Wars Galaxies Small FAQ Update February 26, 2001
By: Mystery
There was a minor update to the SW:G FAQ on Friday. Here is what's been addressed:

6.12 Will I be able to build a Rebel or Imperial base?

Yes. Players of the appropriate faction will be able to establish bases, which will then behave just like any other Rebel or Imperial bases in the game, including attracting the attention of NPCs of the opposite faction.

From the Recent Developer’s Boards

2.09 My kids want to play Star Wars Galaxies. Will there be a profanity filter of some sort in the game?

A profanity filter will definitely be in the game. You will be able to decide whether to use it, what additional words go into it, as well as be able to password it so that it can be used as a parental control.

You can see the rest of the FAQ here.
