Alexander MacKillop, who was born on January 21, 1812 at Lochaber in the Scottish Highlands, migrated to Australia. He arrived in Sydney on the ‘Brilliant’ on January 20, 1838 and in the following year moved to Melbourne to work with the trading firm, Campbell and Sons.

She died 8 Aug 1909, having overcome the objections by Bishops over her leadership - on August 15, 1867, Mary became the first Sister of St Joseph to take the religious vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience.
