Currently reading…. J. K. Rowling, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” Peter Mayle, “Anything Considered” Friday, Mar. 28, 2003 J. K. Rowling, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”, Harry’s third year at Hogwarts. You-Know-Who had many sinister helpers and one of them just broke out of prison. And guess, who he is trying to get to? This was the best book of the series so far. The first one was nice, reading the second one I was hooked. This one I could not put down. Pretty good for a children’s book, ey? I kept guessing at the plot, who the bad guys might be etc. and I was wrong every time. Excellent! Friday, Mar. 21, 2003 Kim Stanley Robinson, “Blue Mars”, every now and then I stumble across a truly inspired book. This is one of them. One of three, actually, as it is the last in a trilogy, starting with “Red Mars” and continuing with “Green Mars”. Colonists come to Mars and transform it into a liveable world, while trying not to make the same mistakes as Earth did. Beautifully written, great characterisations, Mars comes to life, it’s almost like reading peotry. I felt really bad after finishing it, because I had to part with this great story. Wednesday, Mar. 05, 2003 Dietrich Schwanitz, “Bildung“ (“Education“), everything you are supposed to know after receiving a „humanistic“ education. Parts of the book were excellent (= where I did not know much about the subject, but wanted to know more), others were a bit shallow (= knew quite a bit already) and others again I found not very interesting (= don’t know much, don’t care to know). All considered a good read from the first to the last page. With a lot of humour, largly entertaining and will definitely get a place on the shelf next to my dictionaries and encyclopedias for further use. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003 Jeffrey Deaver, “Hell’s Kitchen”, fairly good thriller. Generally believable plot – the plot twist at the end felt a bit forced, but still…..quite a lot of suspense, good characterisations, a strong main character. And it gives you a nice look into Hell’s Kitchen and what makes the people tick there. We are chasing a pyromaniac by the way… |
