IF YOU DO FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK, YOU HAVE TO DANCE WITH ME AND KIRSTY
As The Pogues re-release the only Christmas hit everyone loves year after year, Shane MacGowan remembers the late and unforgettable Kirsty MacColl
By John Dingwall
25 November 2005
The Daily Record

THE duet has become one of the greatest Christmas pop songs of all time . . . but Shane MacGowan has revealed he didn't even sing it with Kirsty MacColl until long after the single was made.
Instead, Kirsty recorded her vocals at home after the rest of the track had been done by Shane and the band in the studio with Kirsty's ex-husband and legendary producer Steve Lillywhite.
When the pair finally met up to sing the song - after the record's release - the chemistry between them helped enhance its status as an instant classic.

"KATE MOSS'S junkie boyfriend Pete Doherty has been secretly dating a stunning art student while the supermodel has been out of the country."

I don't give a flying fuck, believe me! Why it made on this page then? Well... maybe be cause of:

"The final insult to Kate came last week when Doherty paraded Nuha in front of the model's friends at a dinner party thrown by Pogues front man
Shane MacGowan."

What a heart-rending story! and what a mean role, huh?
But most of all I love
this comment:

The only real eyebrow raising element of the whole incident is the mental image of this dinner party - Shane McGowan inviting Pete Doherty round for a dinner party? Wouldn't you love to be the thirteenth guest there?
"Profiteroles! How lovely!"
"They are M&S, I cheated a little..."
"You'd never tell, they're like home made... and the punch?"
"Oh, that is home-made - family recipe; the knack is in when you add the lighter fluid, not in how much. Can I help you to more coke?"
"This really is very good..."
"Oh, yes... even the washing powder it's been cut with is ecological friendly..."

Good point, man! :))

And some more of stories on that lovely couple, Shane and Pete I mean...
Doherty plays fast and loos

"There was one more treat for fans - granddaddy of the rock bender, Shane McGowan of the Pogues, attended the gig. He left in a car, brandishing a wad of crisp ?20 notes."

Pete learns from the master after a night on Dirty Old Town
SHANE HICKEY
Sunday Independent
15 May 2005

THEY walked through the dawn together like the father and son of hedonism.
As the light rose in the early hours of yesterday morning, two of rock's most renowned troubled talents strolled through Dublin city after a long night at the Trinity Ball.
In the bizarre get-up of a top hat and a pair of brothel-creepers, Shane McGowan chatted with the frontman of Babyshambles Pete Doherty, a guitar still in his hand from the night's entertainment.
The scene showed two generations of hell-raisers - renowed songwriter McGowan, whose tales of excess have reached legendary status, and Doherty, the newcomer on the hedonistic block, but one who has already notched up miles of tabloid inches in his short music career.
The two had come together after Doherty took to the stage at the black-tie ball with his new band Babyshambles - one of his first gigs since leaving rehab, where he was attempting to beat chronic addictions to heroin and crack cocaine.
Whatever tales of excess may have been told of Doherty during his days as one half of the songwriting team that graced his first band, the Libertines (and more lately with Babyshambles), they pale in comparison to the physical definition of hard living strolling beside him yesterday morning.
It was a picture of two men whose lives have more than a few similarities.
Both share between them not only the aftermaths of excessive lifestyles but also near obsessive levels of support from fans.
And both also left behind them the bands which they helped define - for McGowan the Pogues and Doherty, Babyshambles.
Kate Moss of course is the only beautiful thing that separates the protege from the master.

Shane v Santa
The Sun
HELLRAISER SHANE MacGOWAN will go head-to-head with SANTA in an epic battle for the Christmas No1.
THE POGUES are re-releasing Fairytale Of New York, the best Christmas song of all time in my opinion, at the beginning of December.
And I can reveal Santa is making his first assault on the charts at the same time.

Pogues to re-release most famous single
Virgin.net
Irish folk outfit The Pogues are to re-release their most famous single 'Fairytale of New York' after a suggestion from Warner Music executives.
The song was originally released in 1987 and reached number two in the charts. However, the group, led by charismatic frontman Shane McGowan, will have to record the latest version without singer Kirsty MacColl, who guested on the original.
MacColl died in tragic circumstances after a bizarre speedboating accident in December 2000.
The song will contest the Christmas number one spot with yet another re-working of Tony Christie's (shudder) Amarillo. The re-working has been imaginatively titled 'Is This The Way To Santa's Grotto'.

The Pogues Re-release 'Fairytale Of New York'
To battle Santa for xmas No. 1...

The Pogues are set to re-release ‘Fairytale Of New York’ this December in an attempt to claim this year’s Christmas Number 1.
Shane McGowan and Co won’t have it all their own way though as this year Santa his attempting to achieve his first ever chart success. He’s recorded ‘(Is This The Way To) Santa’s Grotto’, a rip off of Tony Christie’s Amarillo, reports The Sun.
The Pogues re-release comes after Warner Music executives suggested the idea to band member Spider Stacey last week. The song was first released in 1987 and reached Number 2.
A source told the paper: “Fairytale Of New York is an adult answer to Jingle Bells. It’s difficult to remember a Christmas party without a drunken singalong with The Pogues.”
“The label were keen to re-release the song because a whole new generation of fans have heard Shane through his association with Kate Moss and Pete Doherty. It is a good bet for Christmas No. 1.”
The song was first re-released in 1991.

The Ginger Man Celebrates Its Eponym
By GARY SHAPIRO
October 31, 2005

Brooklyn-born author James Patrick Donleavy, who grew up in the Bronx but expatriated to Ireland, returned to Manhattan to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his classic novel "The Ginger Man," about an uncompromising hedonist named Sebastian Dangerfield. Over the years, the book has been praised by many - including Dorothy Parker, John Lennon, Kenneth Tynan, and Van Morrison.
The party was held at The Ginger Man, a bar named for the novel and located at 11 E. 36th Street. The bar's owner, Bob Precious; the author's son, Philip Donleavy; and two of the author's friends, Bob Mitchell and Stefano Ferrari, were hosts.
Shane MacGowan sang "The Boys of Kilmichael" and "Peggy Gordon."

The filming next year of Dunleavy's masterpiece The Ginger Man was also discussed. Depp will play the lead while Shane will play Brendan Behan. Shane was asked was Dunleavy writing the script, his response was hilarious. "Of course he's going to write the f***ing script for Christmas! He's hardly going to hand it over to f***ing Tom Stoppard!" he laughed. "Or you! Or me! JP is going to expand the Brendan Behan part."

"...I deliberately missed all other bands to make sure to be in the first row, right in front of Shane MacGowan (there were two stages). Before the members came in, one sound guy brought a chair right next to Shane's mic, which scared me by believing he was not able to sing while standing up anymore. Fortunately, that chair's only use was to hold Shane's drinks (which was a big glass of gin, by the way). The audience was kind of mixed up."                                                                             MORE   >>>

"Shane MacGowan is not happy with the newly published A DRINK WITH SHANE MacGOWAN. for a start, it should be called Several drinks with Shane MacGowan, he points out. Plus there's a lot in it that's "garbled, dodgy and well-suspect". and on top of that, he wouldn't even stand over SOME of HIS OWN opinions AS expressed in the book. in fact, if shane had his way he'd "burn every fucking copy". Olaf Tyaransen tries to get the record straight while, inevitably, getting the drinks in. "
Liam Fay calls on Shane MacGowan at home, where over mugs of brandy, the singer cheerfully rationalises his notorious alcohol-intake in the face of widespread concern that he might be drinking himself to an early grave. The premier Pogue disagrees, predicting instead a happy fulfilling life away from the stage, in which he would own and run a fully-licensed restaurant in London and face extended vacations in Thailand."                                                                                    MORE   >>>

We met three times; first time some fifteen years ago, last time last week. On the first occassion, in London, this poetic lyricist, excellent songwriter and unmistakable singer Shane MacGowan (46) was at the height of his fame with his band The Pogues. A few years afterwards, he was sacked from the band because of boozing, so he started a new band, called it The Popes and in 1996 he came to play in Prague; he was on the zenith of his solo career then, and terribly drunk. On the twelfth of June [2004] he will return – he is looking forward to it a lot as he said into the telephone. He was sober, worn out, only a shadow of his past glory.                                                                                        MORE   >>>

"...Shane is dealing with his life in his own way and no one but him can stand in his shoes and see it from his point of view. And, so, the only thing we can do is to offer love, if we have it and compassion, rather than criticism. And to take responsibility for our own happiness and well-being and not to judge anyone else, including Shane. And for those of us who don't like to see him vomit on stage, perhaps we don't have to go to his concerts. For those of us who do decide to go to his concerts, I am sure that he will continue to give the best that he is capable of, for as long as he possibly can. Long may that be.

It was written almost three years ago but still is topical. And always will be... Full text   >>>

                                                The  POGUES
                                                      Guilfest, UK, 15 July 2005
Guilfest 2005 - Friday
VirtualFestivals.com
"Needless to say Shane McGowan is one of the greatest songwriters from anywhere, but in the Irish community he’s a hero, a national treasure who can do no wrong - even when he’s acting the bollix and seems intent on self-destruction (but, that is the very nature of this very bloody, ragged, glorious and contrary beast). But we needn’t have worried about Shane today, despite being spotted legless back-stage, as he’s actually on good form – by his standards anyway, despite saying how great it is to be in Barcelona! His infamous black humour is every bit in evidence, as well as a wilful erratic obscurity (aided, no doubt, by the vast jug of cloudy, alcoholic beverage at his side!) and Spider is the perfect foil for him – going along with the apparent eccentricity (including quoting Hamlet!) but always keeping everything ticking along.
Musically, The Pogues completely deliver,  whether during the fast and furious belters like ‘Fiesta’ or in the bruised, tear-soaked ballads like ‘The Broad Majestic Shannon’ or ‘A Pair Of Brown Eyes’. They have the whole crowd in the palms of their hands and sound exactly the same as they always did, but visually there’s not as much anarchic shenanigans as there used to be. Still, it matters not a jot to the field full of pissed-up nutters having a hooley: dancing like Billy-bejaysus, leppin’ like salmon and careering into each other as they play ‘The Irish Rover’ in it’s sheer, unadulterated bloody mayhem! ‘Dirty Old Town’s another big favourite, with absolutely everyone waking the echoes and singing along at the tops of their lungs!  So, in conclusion – we came, we saw, we sang along, we danced, we got pissed and we fell over – sounds like the perfect Pogues gig to me."

GUILFEST 2005 REVIEW
Uncut.net
"The Pogues couldn’t have played anywhere else but the top of the bill -not just because their legendary status, but also because playing last allowed the crowd enough time at the bar to enjoy their reeling jigs and heartfelt ballads in an appropriately convivial mood. With a all key members on board - including Spider Stacy, Phillip Chevron and the infamous Shane McGowan - The Pogues took the stage and launched themselves head first into kerosene-fuelled versions of classics like “Tuesday Morning” and “Streams Of Whiskey”, a sharp reminder of why folk music, played with punk attitude, has all the incendiary force of its spiky-haired sibling.
Since his original departure from the fold in 1991, Shane has never been able to fully sever his ties with the group, returning a decade later for Christmas shows and again in 2004, these gigs apparently inspiring a renewed – ahem - thirst for performance. Shane’s performance on this occasion was captivating, in a very literal sense. Try as you might to avert your gaze from this wreck of a man, a man that in all other walks of life would surely have been written off an age ago, he remains the most interesting thing on stage. Blind drunk, disheveled and absolutely incoherent, his between song spiels should have come with subtitles. His stumbling delivery and whisky soaked inflections were sublime in their folly, and on the numbers that Chevron sung in his absence (presumably exiting to refresh his glass), his uniquely exuberant presence was sorely missed. "

Fans' reviews:
I was there, it was great wasn`t it??? Great athmosphere, bit too hot though inside...
Shane appeared remarkably sober, at least in the beginning, and he kept on longer than I expected. I have seen him much worse.,
The rest of the band sure looks old though, but they still play damn well.
Bikkurin

...i was surprised at how old most of the members of the band looked. Especially Phil Chevron. Spider Stacey looks relatively ageless however, perhaps just when compared to his bandmates.
The sound of the show was so-so, it got better after the first two and ahalf songs, but i still have a few complaints. i thought both the bass and the guitar were too loud, and you could barely hear Spider's tin whistle throughout. Both the banjo and the accordian were remarkably clear however. And though i ws impressed with the rendition of "Fiesta", it certainly missed the punchiness of a full horn section (especially the trombone).
Shane... what can be said. He was alright, more on the good side than the bad. He sure waddled about though, and i wonder what he kept nipping off the stage to do. i wonder how the other band members reconcile themselves with the obvious adoration showered on to Shane, even after all these years.

Just why did Shane pull out of Solfest?
News & Star
14th July 2005

IT ALWAYS seemed too good to be true, but now festival goers’ worst fears have been realised. Shane MacGowan and his band The Popes have pulled out of Solfest in August.
While fans might have imagined a no-show by Shane on the day (possibly after he’d drunk the beer tent dry), instead the Solfest cancellation follows a string of missed appearances – not least this month’s historic Live 8 concert at Murrayfield.
Solfest organiser Gerard Irving found out that Shane might not be coming to the August 26-28 festival and has been working frantically to replace the headline act.
“It’s been a bit confused,” says Gerard. “Obviously we had signed a contract but we don’t really know what is wrong. We had to make a decision but it will be interesting to see if he turns up at Guilfest with The Pogues this weekend.”

In Sight/ Music: Where it all fell apart: Pogues return to Japan
07/08/2005
By WAYNE GABEL, Staff Writer
A lot of people had given the Pogues up for dead.
The obituaries, it turns out, were premature-much like those of their irrascible front man, Shane MacGowan, whose reputation for hard living had long made him a prime candidate for an early grave.
Though many assumed the Anglo-Irish band had breathed its last in 1991, when MacGowan parted ways with his bandmates during an ill-fated tour of Japan, the Pogues soldiered on without their principal singer and songwriter for two more albums, shedding more longtime members along the way. The final nail in the Pogues' coffin didn't come until 1995-or so it seemed.

It turns out that Danny Clifford keeps online dairy. Which is worthy to read for sure.
In
June archive Vogue photo-session got mentioned:
"
I headed over to The Boogaloo in Highgate, in North London. There was a photoshoot taking place there. It was for Italian Vogue magazine.. They were shooting Shane MacGowan & Spider Stacey from the Pogues, Mick Jones from the Clash.. And Carl Barat & Pete Doherty from or more precisely, ex-Libertines. Now this must have been a real learning curve for the fashion world.. All was going swimmingly, until someone noticed that Pete wasn't there.. and knowing Pete as I do a little, he wasn't going to make it at all.. Surprise surprise, he didn't..
The seemed to be a few very stressed looking Italians and by the sound of a few other accents, Americans as well. I went and had a few words with Shane & Spider. Shane was completely, out of it.. He managed a 'Hello Danny' as his head then bounced back onto the table with a thud..
"

December
was mostly dedicated to Pogues reunion (with pics of course)
