Q magazine By ANDY FYFE "IN THEORY, WE shouldn't be here at all. Reports of the deaths of The Pogues, both individually and as a group, have been bandied around for years. Their legendarily dissolute lifestyle had threatened to account for more than one of them over the years, and it seemed likely that their decision to split in 1996 was final. After 14 years stumbling around the world blind drunk, even sacking singer Shane MacGowan in 1991 for being too much of a liability, it was time to hang up their livers to rest. So when MacGowan, ever-present pint of Martini in hand, follows the band onstage, there's a devoted roar of relief." MORE >>> The Pogues at Brixton Academy Wessex Scene Online 13 Feb 2006 Stephen Thompson For those who are sadly unaware of The Pogues, they are without a shadow of a doubt one of the best classic punk bands to ever walk the earth. Their musical style combines traditional Irish folk music with punk rock to produce a unique and highly attractive sound. Lead singer Shane MacGowan is famous for three things: not having any teeth, drinking copious amounts of hard liquor, and lastly but most importantly being one of the most profound songwriters of our time. MORE >>> Award shows Pogues’ glory days are gone As The Pogues prepare to accept a prestigious music award RONAN McGREEVY salutes the genius of the band who celebrated all things Irish. The Irish Post 1 Feb 2006 It seems extraordinary given their impact but the Lifetiem Achievement Award that The Pogues will receive at the Meteor Irish Music Awards in Dublin this week is the first such award of their career. The Pogues do not need the validation of the Irish music establishment to acknowledge the brilliant band they once were. They know what they've done. But has it all been a spectacular deception? Certainly the legendary The Ginger Man author JP Donleavy is less than convinced of the legend of MacGowan's drinking. Those who tuned into Sunday's RTE recording of the 2006 Meteor Music Awards will have seen him up on stage belting out The Irish Rover with the Dubliners and The Pogues after he and The Pogues had received a Lifetime Achievement Award. MORE >>> 07.02.2006 The Pogues picked up the lifetime achievement award The Meteor Ireland Music Awards (aka "The Meteors"), which celebrated their sixth year, are the national music awards of Ireland. They are the equivalent to the United Kingdom's Brit Awards or the Grammy Awards in the United States. The ceremony took place on 2nd February at the Point Theater, Dublin. On the night 17 Meteor Ireland Music Awards were presented and the Pogues were among laureates of this year. They played live to accept their Lifetime Achievement award, saluting their 24 year chartmaking career and closing the show with The Dubliners and a rendition of Irish Rover. Earlier on the red carpet Shane MacGowan said: "It's nice to be a legend when you are still alive, a lifetime achievement award is not part of any job really." After all, who'd have thought Shane McGowan would be caught lip-locking a fella? The mind, as they say, boggles. The spontaneous smooching took place at Ireland's Meteor Awards (think the Brits), where Shane arrived to accept the Lifetime Achievement award with his band The Pogues. It seems the accolade left Shane a bit emotional, so he shared a tender, tongues-and-all, moment with fellow Irish singer Gavin Friday. Shane, all throughout his 1 hour 40 minute DJ set, admirers clamber up onto the Rehab stage to shake his hand or thrust a bit of paper at him to sign. Yes yes, the Pogues have never exactly been starved of praise and adulation, but they're way down in those lists that people do. The Smiths, The Cure, Joy Division, PiL blah de blah get cited as the influences of not very good bands everytime a journalist runs out of questions, and yet the London Irish troupe are about the 89th most imporant band ever, squeezed between Squeeze and the fucking Stranglers - if we're being brutally honest and that. Still London is London, Christmas was just around the corner and the Pogues were back with their so-called "definitive" lineout to play a series of sell-out "home town" gigs. And the busker at the tube station was playing "Fairytale of New York" on the saxophone - a forestaste of what was to come - or at least I hoped so. As I neared the Brixton Academy the ticket touts and t-shirt sellers were out in force. The latter even seemed to be doing a brisk trade despite the time of year. MORE >>> A fairytale of old folk-rockers The Pogues, The Dropkick Murphys, Brixton Academy Reviewed by Richard Godwin, Evening Standard 22 Dec 2005 The Pogues and Christmas are made for each other. Both come soaked in booze and steeped in tradition, and both have a heart-nagging appeal that cuts across the generations. Among the rambling boys of pleasure and ladies of easy leisure reliving their Eighties teenage years at Brixton last night was a smattering of hyperactive kids and good-time Irish rou?s from the Shane MacGowan school of dentistry, giving the folk rockers' seasonal get-together the air of a rowdy Tipperary wedding. MORE >>> Nostalgia with a fairy-tale ending THE POGUES, Brixton Academy, LONDON **** The Independent 22 Dec 2005 It is usual, and generally accurate, to suggest that bands who continue to tour long past their creative sell-by date have become a cabaret turn. But the Pogues, while apparently having little to offer any more but the opportunity for a massed nostalgic sing-along, are more of a circus act whose star attraction is the Amazing Indestructible Shane MacGowan. MORE >>> Pop: The Pogues The Times 22 Dec 2005 Lisa Verrico at Brixton Academy, SW9 Like a lot of re-formed Eighties acts, the Pogues always hit the road around Christmas, when fans are up for a sozzled singalong, and a set of old songs sounds nostalgic, rather than pass?. It’s a cash-in, of course, but even after four years with no sign of a new album the Pogues can put up a couple of tinsel-draped trees and sprinkle the stage with fake snow and still steer clear of seasonal cheese. "That pair of retrobates Shane MacGowan and BP Fallon are teaming up yet again - to check into Rehab! And who better to DJ with BP at Rehab's Irish debut than Shane MacGowan. Shane - who will play Brendan Behan in the film adaptation of JP Dunleavy's The Ginger Man with his chum Johnny Depp - was spotted after the film's announcement party last month gallivanting in strange clubs all over and under New York with his pal BP, the dutiful duo no doubt limbering up for the craic at Rehab after The Pogues Dublin Christmas Concert. Our celebrated Mr MacGowan has already triumphantly DJed at seven Death Discos in Dublin and Belfast, getting the dance-floor jumping with everything from The Clash and Led Zeppelin to Joy Division and Jerry Lee Lewis, via Sly And The Family Stone, The Stones, Hank Williams and The Siamsa Gaedheel Ceilidh Band. People go bonkers when Shane's spinning. He's bloody good at it, sometimes also singing into the mic over the record. The bandleader in him reads the crowd and as the audience rises and rises he chooses his tracks instinctively - even though sometimes he might let on he doesn't give a fuck. Ah, that vagrant poetic charm. "I like DJing,' says Shane, "because I like, like, Hendrix and Elvis and I can't do that in my bands - but as a DJ I can play that music, know what I mean?" To his side, MacGowan looks unusually at ease in an open-neck black shirt, sipping a glass of white wine. The disappearance of the Pogues from public view can be traced back to the original release of their hit record, 'Fairytale of New York', in 1987. Just as they reached their pinnacle, MacGowan's vision for the Pogues began to encounter resistance from his fellow band members. The Pogues frontman warmed up for his forthcoming Christmas tour by appearing on stage at Koko, Camden, but his performance was overshadowed by his entrance, when he took just three steps before falling over in a Vic Reeves' style comedy fall. Once he'd been dragged to his feet, MacGowan joined the Lancaster Bombers for a rather odd rendition of She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain before stumbling off again, when he was supposed to be presenting the final award, the coveted Muso's Muso award to Primal Scream. More >>> "...I was stunned by the last band <Lancaster Bombers> whose passionate, almost psychotic, lead singer seemed to strangely negate the lack of energy the rest of the band members exhibited. His jumping around, falling into the group of photographers and general strange behaviour won no credit from me. They also coupled with a visibly drunk Shane McGowan (from The Pogues) to perform an awful rendition of She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain. I was quite happy at that point to ease my way back through the crowd to make my exit. Highlights: Free tickets to see some new rock bands. Artic Monkeys and Dogs were pretty awesome acts as well. Room for improvement: Organisation was terrible, it was extremely cold inside and Shane McGowan, one of the “bigger” acts was completely trashed." Posted by Patrick. Full URL plus pic of Shane |
