Shane MacGowan Still Alive
The Dubliner
20 Apr 2007

Book launches are usually turgid affairs, writes Paul Trainer. So when Victoria Mary Clarke asked us to host the launch of her new tome Angels in Disguise? we yawned. Then she asked us if we would mind wearing angel wings on the night. We refused the wings but quickly realised this was not going to be your average party.
We arrived at Vicar Street to find Victoria – in PVC dress – and fianc? Shane MacGowan posing for a ruck of photographers. Inside JP Donleavy, Mundy, Charlie Whisker, Jasmine Guinness, Kirsten Sheridan and Ronnie Drew jockeyed for position with Dubliner readers at the front of the stage waiting to hear MacGowan singing Elvis Presley’s Devil in Disguise.
It was a fun party, but the book launch was only the start. Roused by literature, a gang of guests streamed out towards the South William bar. Shane and Victoria stopped off in the Odessa Club for some food and drink with their family and some of the Pogues crew. After that, our notes get a little confused.
There was singing and some drinking. Possibly some dancing. Robbie Fox was there so we must have been in Renards. Shane was sitting at the top table checking that everyone had bought a copy of Victoria’s book. After a while the note-taking stopped.
Last I recall, I was in a taxi with Shane, the driver was blasting out Frank Sinatra tunes and all the passengers were roaring along. I may have been wearing angel wings.

Bride of Shane
By Debbie McGoldrick
Irish Voice

GRIZZLED rocker Shane MacGowan will soon take a missus, and she appears to be his match in every wild way.
Victoria Mary Clarke, a writer, has known Shane since she was a teenager, and after all those up and down years together, they’re planning a wedding this summer. Clarke launched her book called Angel in Disguise? last week at a Dublin party a cocktail one, of course and the bride-to-be looked, well, rather odd in a black plastic mini dress and over the top makeup.
How did Pogues frontman Shane manage to pop the question? He’s been asking and asking for some time now, Victoria said during an expletive laden interview on Irish radio last week. Last Christmas, she finally capitulated.
“Why don’t we get married, ah go on marry me, ah come on for f**** sake marry me,” was the romantic way her groom put it, according to Victoria, who also admitted on live radio that she was “still p****d” from her launch party the night before. Sweet.
Who will consent to marry this pair? If the future Mrs. Mac has her way it’ll be Sinead O’Connor, who, you’ll remember, was ordained a “priest” in one of her prior incarnations.

No angels : Shane's girl saved on wing and a prayer
Fergus Black
Irish Independent
12 Apr 2007

FORGET the usual run-of-the-mill story of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.
This one is all about how a dismal life was saved by an angel.
Separated from her soul mate, former Pogues wild boy Shane MacGowan, suicidal wannabe celeb Victoria Mary Clarke asked whether "anyone up there in charge" could help.
She got a response and so began a dialogue with angels that was to result in her book 'Angel in Disguise?'
Last night, the book she took six years to write was launched by her soon-to-be-husband Shane McGowan at a celebration in Dublin's Vicar Street.
Sporting a black PVC mini with white wings attached, Victoria spoke of the couple's upcoming wedding in September following an on-again, off-again tempestuous relationship that has spanned more than 20 years.
While she doesn't plan on a church ceremony, Victoria said the plan was to tie the knot after this summer's Electric Picnic festival. And if she had her choice of the person to marry them, she would "love Sinead O'Connor to do it".
"I like her book," Shane proclaimed. "Angels? I believe in them, yeah."
Among the celebs on hand were author JP Dunleavy; film director Jim Sheridan and his daughter Kirsten; singer, Ronnie Drew and actor Mannix Flynn.

Victoria's secret revealed
Irish Independent
11 Apr 2007

Many must think that Victoria Mary Clarke is off her rocker for putting up with Shane MacGowan's antics down through the years.
But of course she (like those of us who were blessed to spend time in his company) must have had intimations that he is a a celestial being.
Victoria has finally put pen to paper on her many years of communing with the winged ones and is celebrating the launch of her new book, Angel in Disguise, in Vicar Street tonight.
And from what Victoria tells me, it promises to be one hell (or heaven) of a party with all of Dublin's saints and sinners invited.
"I have been putting up angels all day," Victoria told People yesterday.
"Shane will be singing and hopefully some other special guests. JP Dunleavy will be making a speech and there will be a few DJs playing."
Other guests expected to attend include Dolores O'Riordan, Jim Sheridan, Sinead O'Connor, Gavin Friday and artist Guggi.
Always the intuitive journalist, Victoria was quick to pick up on my scepticism telling me that she herself was initially wary but the more she got into it the more it worked for her.
"I asked the angels for nice shoes, an apartment and advice on ending a relationship," she said.
Meanwhile, the bride-to-be is planning her wedding with the Pogues frontman in early September.
"We want to have it near the Electric Picnic dates. At the moment we are having fun searching for a venue for the wedding."

The Saint Patrick's Day From County Hell
My Weekend with the Pogues
By Ben Carlin
4 Apr 2007

It was well after four a.m., when Mikey Palms, the owner of the local rock club told me that he may have an opportunity to book Shane MacGowan, the lead singer for Irish punk band The Pogues, to DJ a party on St. Patrick’s Day. At first I was skeptical as anyone with knowledge of Shane's track record would be. He was going to be in town to play four nights at the Nokia Theater with the Pogues, whom he had recently reunited with and the plan was for him to come to Southpaw, Mikey’s club, after one of the gigs. Shane had been doing a series of successful parties called Death Disco with a man named B.P. Fallon who had proposed the idea to put one on in Brooklyn while he was in town. I had been knocking back a few with Bill Carney when Mikey told us about it. Bill, who knows Mikey well from playing at the club in his various musical aliases, warned him against it. “The guys unreliable. Don’t risk your club’s reputation on him.” He summed it up with an emphatic, “Don’t fucking do it, Mikey!”

Dave Copeland shares intruiging news in

As for
Shane and Victoria's wedding - the date has been set (according to Sunday Independent):
("
We've decided on September 8," Victoria Clarke told. "A venue has been found with a suitable field," adding that she has just finished her book. "There's lots of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. It tells of the horrifying and hellish life I led before I discovered angels.")

And two articles by Victoria on the subject:

A Man You Don't Meet Every Day - Shane MacGowan, Christmas 2006
by Martin Roddy
With another successful reunion tour wrapped up, lead singer Shane MacGowan, took his traditional pilgrimage to North-West Tipperary to spend Christmas with this family and close friends. It is remarkable to see this oftentimes-doomed singer back selling out the top venues with his original band The Pogues. The rocker has been reunited with The Pogues for the past few years, touring with a live show of their greatest hits, and by all accounts, this reunion is working well. Here MacGowan speaks about being back with the band and his ambition for the coming year.

The Ultimate Hellraiser (6th Jan 2007, Channel 4)
Show reviews the hedonistic habits of 25 rock stars. Status Quo recall their cocaine abuse, and rather alarmingly giggle about Rick Parfitt’s heart attack. Alice Cooper talks about his alcohol abuse.  Lemmy from Motorhead talks about taking poisonous atropine sulphate, believing it to be speed. There are also stories of debauchery involving Keith Richards, Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin, the late James Brown, the Happy Mondays and Pete Doherty, as well as Iggy Pop’s talent for provoking his audience. On their top Shane MacGowan gets to number 7 (and is interviewed along with Victoria Clarke and Joey Cashman, mostly about the time Shane painted himself and his hotel room blue in New Zealand, after believing he was in contact with Maori spirits, and the time he ate a Beach Boys record)

Irish Independent couldn’t ignore the event:

Hellraiser Shane steals chart show
Irish Independent
8th Jan 2007

SHANE MacGowan has managed to make the charts again, but sadly, for his hellraising rather than his musical prowess.
The Pogues frontman featured on Channel 4's 'The Ultimate Hellraiser' on Saturday night alongside fellow bad boys Ozzy Osbourne, Keith Richards and the recently deceased James Brown.
However, this dubious accolade probably hasn't registered with the singing poet (and not for the obvious reasons), as he was mourning the loss of his friend and The Popes bandmate Tom McManamon, who was buried in London last Friday. Hundreds of friends, family and fans gathered to pay their final respects to The Popes banjo player - affectionately known as The Beast - who also worked with Depeche Mode, Joe Strummer, U2 and Sinead O'Connor.
True to his rocker persona, McManamon (45) was buried wearing his jeans and leather jacket with his banjo in his hand.
According to a source, MacGowan didn't attend the funeral in Highgate, fearing his presence might have detracted from the proceedings.

Old review/interview - Victoria on A Drink and other things:
Memoirs are made of this for the odd couple
Sunday Herald,
11th Mar, 2001
by Susan Flockhart

A GUINNESS-SCENTED Dublin hotel lounge within spitting distance of the Liffey river. The perfect location for an intimate, incisive interview with Shane MacGowan, the hard-drinking, gap-toothed legend of Anglo-Irish punk.
Fascinating rumours have been circulating that the former Pogues frontman is incarcerated within these hotel walls. Is he, as one newspaper speculated, a booze-sodden prisoner of the #2000-plus unpaid bar bill he insists should be settled by Macmillan, publishers of his soon-to-be- released memoir, A Drink With Shane MacGowan?

Adam of Murder by Death on supporting Pogues and meeting Shane:
"
Well, I just had the opportunity to open three shows with my favorite band, The Pogues, just us and them in San Francisco and LA...It was so much better than I could have guessed. I've been floating since the first day. We showed up at the Fillmore in San Francisco and it is simply gorgeous- it's an old theater with beautiful balconies, which it turned out, were our dressing rooms. The Pogues were amazing- i sang along the entire show from either the balcony that overlooked the left of side of the stage and sometimes just up next to the stage, a bottle of whiskey in my hand. It was trance-like, to watch a band i've been listening to for over ten years and never thought I would have the chance to see, let alone play with. So the show ended and we hadn't met any of the band- we had heard that they keep to themselves and barely anyone gets to meet Shane Mcgowan (the singer). I wasn't counting on anything but after the show some of the band came over and said they liked our show (we couldn't believe it!). Shane McGowan's wife came over and said she heard I was a big fan and so she suggested that i meet Shane. I happily obliged. It is very strange when you meet someone that you really respect. When I introduced myself my first instinct was to get the compliments out of the way and say "I love your music" and so, of course, I did. Shane did not seem interested in that at all, and so I never brought up music in that way again. He was drunk and I certainly was too- his wife Victoria was the total model of composure, though. She moderated and accomodated the conversation in a very helpful way- Shane has a thick, slurred accent which to this midwesterner can be hard to understand. We talked about Buddhist Temples, and Indiana. They started calling me "Indiana" (which I didn't complain about as I chose to think of it more like Indiana Jones). When it was time to leave the club they invited me to go Salsa dancing to which I could hardly deny my company. To go dancing with Shane Mcgowan and his wife is the kind of experience I don't expect to happen too often. Their friend Rudy drove us around town looking for clubs but it was too late and it turns out they were all closed so we ended up at a fifties-style diner. Turns out Rudy used to tour with the Clash and that's how he met Shane. Anyway, i got to eat dinner with them and Rudy was kind enough to pick up the tab. I ordered flapjacks and at one point Shane looked at my plate, mumbled something to me and took a bite of my pancakes. I said "by all means". We played a music trivia game they like where you pick a word (in this case the first one was "wine") one person sings a line of song that has the word 'wine' in it, and then you go around the group each singing a song with that word in it. It was fun to hear Shane sing in this context. At the end of the night he fell asleep at the table. Amazing. "

Shane MacGowan and his New Romantic Butler in Tangie
Mojo
In December 2005, chief Pogue Shane MacGowan went to Tangier with his pal Dickon Edwards. Dickon, recording artist, man of letters and self-styled fl?neur, has written of this unique holiday, and vibed up by this issue's ace pic of Shane done up as Father Christmas, we decided to share it with you. Enjoy this excerpt from  'El Hombre Indelible: Shane MacGowan and his New Romantic Butler in Tangier' By Dickon Edwards.

"…We booked into the Hotel Continental in the Medina, Mr MacGowan aptly taking Room 101. It’s a beautiful old place, as seen in Mr. Bertolucci’s Sheltering Sky movie. Rather amusingly, it’s also alcohol-free, so I was dispatched to the Ville Nouveau to stock up on gin and tonic.  He may no longer be a heroin addict, but he’s still a gin and tonic and cigarettes junkie. To stop those, he said, would kill him. For much of our week-long stay, Mr. MacGowan was happy to remain in our hotel room, reading, drinking, relaxing, clearing his head of London before having to rehearse with the reunited Pogues (‘reformed’ sounds misleading) for a high profile Christmas tour.
‘I didn’t come here to wake up,’ he snarled after two days without eating or leaving his room. I had no answer to that. Although I dismissed the hotel staff’s suggestion of a doctor, it was difficult to tell what was entirely normal and what was cause for concern. So I was relived when Mr O’Boyle flew in to join us for the middle of the week.
I’d bought Michelle Green’s biography about Tangier’s literary renegades, The Dream at the End of the World. One passage recounts Jack Kerouac not leaving his hotel room for days, trying to sleep with noises of Mr Burroughs’s pederasty going in the next room. I read this passage aloud to Mr MacG and he replied: ‘I’ve heard worse things coming from a room next door.’And he giggled that white noise giggle.
Though I happily shopped for him, my blood pressure drew the line at majoun and kif, the local narcotics. He grumbled slightly, but acquiesced.
‘I wouldn’t expect my sister to buy drugs for me, so I guess I shouldn’t expect it of you...’

Shane provokes deep thoughts and shrewd observations as always...
"...
Shane MacGowan is ugly as sin, with his big protruding ears, alley bum hair, pasty irish white feverish skin, hes the closest you can physically come to an Orc in facial construction. And his infamous teeth are the worst you would ever possibly see, teeth that would make an eskimo baby cry. He also insists on only singing drunk, he always sings with a drink in his hand, he always sings with a fag in his other hand, and to be honest, he really cant even sing very good, quite possibly the worst singer ever to make loads of money actually singing professionally. Its like the greatest magic trick of all time, making people think him singing is worth paying money for. But thats the Irish for ya, because he is a musical icon, a symbol of counter culture..."

Meeting Shane MacGowan
Friday, November 24, 2006
by Enda Brady

In the coming weeks and months I'll be posting up notes and observations from the interviews I get to do for my broadcasting work. One of the most interesting characters I've met and interviewed recently was Shane MacGowan, the legendary frontman from The Pogues. The interview will be broadcast on Sky News on December 18th to mark the sixth anniversary of Kirsty MacColl's death. Her family are still searching for the truth, still seeking justice for Kirsty and MacGowan was determined to help mark the anniversary in the best way possible.
Shane seems to have a strange hold over the Irish media, so much so that headlines were generated last month when he apparently lost more teeth. Meeting the man was a fascinating experience. The interview took place at a pub in north London, owned by a close friend of Shane's. We were invited along before the bar opened so we could get our filming done as quickly as possible, with little hassle.
And there he was! Standing at the bar, pint of lager in hand and a heavyweight Myles na gCopeleen tome in the other, chatting amiably to a mate. We're introduced and I remark that I once tried to read the same book, but couldn't get my head round it. "Try again, it's worth it," came the response.
My colleague Paul Fraser was the cameraman and while he got all his lights and kit set up, Shane MacGowan continued chatting away, waiting for the nod to begin the taped interview.
And when we got under way, in a cloud of cigarette smoke, it wasn't so much an interview as 'the Shane Show'! There was no stopping the man. He's a passionate fella, angry at the treatment of Kirsty MacColl and her family and determined to one day see the full story emerge. His anger was genuine and it was quite humbling to see how very moved he was, six years on, by her passing. The Pogues have raised funds for the Justice for Kirsty Campaign for several years now and their contribution has been acknowledged by the late singer's mother Jean.
The funniest moment of the evening came after the tape had finished rolling. Shane told me he will be 49 years old on Christmas Day, "about the same age as yourself probably". I replied that I'll be 31 this Christmas and he just went . . . "Jaysus". Everyone creased up laughing. Thanks Shane.
For the record, Shane says Fairytale of New York is his favourite work and yes, he did write the music to it as well as the lyrics.
As Paul Fraser put it as we left the pub: "I really enjoyed that one and I'm not even a Pogues fan." That says it all really.

Dickon Edwards posted to his blog
A Blog Entry From Shane MacGowan
"...the other day I set up my laptop on the bar of the Boogaloo and took dictation from SMG as he wrote his first blog entry. In a locked pub, in the early hours, no one else about.
It’s called Saint Shane’s First Letter To The Internetians, and I’ll post it here shortly. Mr O’Boyle and Ms Clarke have already read it and given it their blessing, so it’s effectively a piece of Authorised Biography. I quite like the idea of Shane MacGowan - who doesn’t own a computer - having a blog. We’ll do it again if people like it. As he says, I’m like an occasional Boswell to his Dr Johnson."
SO:

Mr Edwards is typing this on the bar of The Boogaloo with his laptop. It’s gone 1am, and we’re the only ones here. Mr MacGowan speaks - slowly. Mr Edwards writes it down. Without editing.
Take a letter, Mr Edwards.
DE: So how are you, Mr MacGowan?

MacGowan Loses Two More Teeth
by Spat Out Plath
29 oct 2006

Dentally-challenged singer Shane MacGowan lost two teeth this week in a freak accident by a roadside in Limerick, Ireland, reports Irish newspaper The Sunday World.
MacGowan, who really can't afford to discard his already limited supply of teeth so casually, was returning from a late-night music and drinking session when he got out of the car he was travelling in to get sick. Bizarrely, he was rudely interrupted by a wall, which he promptly fell over, cracking his face on some loose bricks.
MacGowan has been without his two front teeth for many years, and he's lost many more in the intervening years. Ex-Girlfriend Victoria Clarke claimed in 1996 that the singer had damaged his teeth by eating a copy of the Beach Boys' Greatest Hits, Vol. 3 LP whilst under the influence of LSD.
Commented pal Dan Gleeson, "We had decided to go to Limerick for a session and were passing through Kilcurry, outside Nenagh, on our way home about 11pm.
"We stopped because Shane wanted to get out and be sick and the next thing I saw were his two feet disappearing over the wall. They are widening the road there and Shane just disappeared over the wall.
"It was dark at the time of course and by the time he got back on his feet he realised he had lost two teeth. He was a bit shaken up and a bit sore. He hasn't exactly got too many teeth to lose."
It was recently reported that MacGowan may use the money earned from the Pogues' reunion tour in 2004 to purchase a new set of teeth.

Doherty triumphs in real live rock band shocker

"... By evening's end, things have turned even more surreal. Encoring with a drearily raucous reading of Dirty Old Town, Doherty invites Shane McGowan - reputedly an old drinking mate - up to belt out the chorus. In the aisles, people are pinching themselves.
A bloated figure with the complexion of a waxwork, McGowan has clearly seen better days. Staring at him from the other side of the stage, might Doherty have an inkling of his own future?"
