The U.S. is an English-language country; People in this country must speak English to do anything. But most immigrants to the U.S. cannot speak English. They lice with a lot of inconveniences and it affect them. It is an important problem. To make their lives better, they must solve it as quickly as possible. |

What is the best way to learn English? Different people have no time to learn English. Some say that they are poor; they have no money to pay tuition. Some say that English is a very difficult language, not easy to learn. All the things they say are facts. But people do not understand that they have to learn English to improve their lives and they can find some way to solve these problems. Think my experience of studying English is proof. |

I came from China and have lived in the U.S. for over ten years. When I first came here, I knew just a little English. I could not hear, write, or speak in English. I lived like a deaf person, a mute, a blind person. I could not do anything without help from my relatives and friends. I lived with a lot of inconveniences, and it made me feel unhappy for a long time. It was a serious problem in my life. I thought I must solve it as soon as possible. I had to do my best to study English. |

Because I worked 12 hours every day, I had no time to study in school. So I decided to study at home without a teacher, by myself. First, I went to a bookstore to buy a Chinese-English dictionary and a set of “talking books.” Then I started to work on the books right away. According to my condition, I learned basic and practical English first. I lived in an old apartment and usually needed to contact the superintendent to talk about things that were wrong in the apartment. I wrote down the name of each thing on a piece of paper, added a sentence to tell what was wrong with it, then put the paper on each one. For example, we must live with power, light and water, so the words that tell about these things, I wanted to learn first. I wrote down, “It is a telephone,” and “My telephone is not working” on a paper on my telephone. I wrote down, “It is a faucet,” and “The faucet is leaking. It wastes a lot of water. Please come to fix it,” on a paper on the faucet in my apartment. I used this method to learn English. Since I looked at these words every day and they gave me a deep impression, I learned fast. |

I learned English at home in the early morning every day. I learned outside my home when I went to work on a train or a bus. I liked to spend any little bit of my free time on studying. I have never stopped my English studying since I came to the U.S. Now I can speak and write some simple English, although it is not fluent. |

In the year 2000, I got a chance to come to learn English at the class of the University Settlement with a teacher, and now I only work part-time in the afternoon, so I can take more time to learn. I think that it can give me more help to improve my English. |

My English is still bad. I am not able to talk freely in English with others. I want to know more about English. I will be persistent and work hard to learn in this class. I hope I can make a great improvement in my English by the end of this term. |
