I was like an ant on a hot pan while I was waiting anxiously for Betty. At 11:50 AM, she came. I felt relief because at least she would teach me she gave me a key and talked briefly about the job. When I wanted her to tell me more, the bell for the garment factory rang. Suddenly Betty's face turned pale, she grasped her handbag and said, "I need go hurry. You can ask the foreman, Mr. Bill." then she ran out fast. I was so disappointed that I seemed to lose my spirit. A woman walked in and asked impolitely, "Hey, where is Betty?" I stared at this stranger and said, "She does not work here anymore." "I know," she answered calmly and left. Oh God, what kind of people I met on my first day. My mind was full of questions, questions. A man in his early thirties came in later. He said in a friendly way "Are you Mrs. Lee? I'm Bill. How are you today?" I smiled bitterly. Okay!" He seemed to know something had happened and said, "That woman is Amy, one of the skillful sewing women in our factory. Take it easy. If something is not your business, you should not get involved in it. Now go to lunch." A few days later, Mr. Chen rushed in. He put a paper on my desk and ordered, "Lee, find the file for me, quickly." I said nervously, "I don't know where the files of this stock company are." He got mad at me and barked, "every time your answer is 'I don't know.' Go to that document case and find it!" I protested, "It is not one of my duties." "Now it is your duty!" he roared. I opened the case with my trembling hands and found the file blindly. When I handed him the file, he took it and rushed out without saying thank you. I was so angry and shamed that it nearly made me cry. I told myself if he insulted me, again I would quit the job at once. After two weeks, everything seemed to be peaceful. At noon, Mr. Chen stormed in. He threw a few bounced checks to me. "Look what you have done!" "These checks were offered by your partner Mr. Tom. He let me deposit them in the bank. How could I know these checks would bounce?" I answered loudly. My boss did not expect that I would retort so boldly. He lost his self-control and roared, "You stupid woman! You think I dare not kick you out?" I stared at him and said scornfully, "Enough. I don't want this lousy job. No, it is not even a job, it is a nightmare!" I took my belongings and walked out, and never looked back. I was happy because I got away from the nightmare. |
