The Three Aetts
First Aett, Runes 1-8

The first 4 runes of the first aett illustrate the different polarities of energy. Fehu, primordial fire, Uruz, eternal ice; the interaction between fire {creativity} and ice {structure} representing the polarities inherent in the Universe. From this interaction came the first Being, and then others embodied in the 3rd rune Thurisaz. The 4th Rune, Ansuz, represents Consciousness. The Earth was created and the paths of the Sun and Moon put into motion; Raidho, the 5th rune, representing the cyclic principle of night and day. The sun and moon were also celestial torches and are linked to the 6th rune, Kenaz, also represeting the knowledge gained through the process. Once Earth and the home of the Gods was created, the next step was embodied in the 7th rune, Gebo, the gift of Life, given to the first human couple. Wunjo, the 8th rune, symbolizes the completion of the first stage of creation; the Golden Age, or Garden of Eden. Second Aett, Runes 9-16

The first Aett deals with the establishment of order out of chaos and the establishment of cosmic patterns. The second Aett deals with the energies that weave, pull, and disrupt these patterns, and consequently make a change. These runes in the second aett are the dynamic powers of transformation which serve as a counter balance to the forces of creation. The last rune of the first aett, Wunjo, refers to a time when 'gold' was considered simply an object of beauty, but had no monetary value. Hagalaz, first rune of the second Aett symbolizes transformative and often disruptive energies from the past. The past also represented by the second rune Nauthiz, and the third, Isa. These three are time in relation to itself; ie the relation of the past to the future, of youth to old age.
Everything reaching its deepest descent into matter with only one way out, is expressed in the 4th rune, Jera. The quest for knowledge is embodied in the 5h rune, Eihwaz. The sixth rune, Perdho, symbolizes the sacrifices made to aquire that knowledge. The seventh rune, Elhaz, represents the emergence of archetypal patterns, and the 8th rune, Sowilo, the return of consciousness; the light of the inner sun, and the completion of another spiral.
