Why Slayers Is Great |
Why is Slayers great? Let's reverse that. What part of Slayers ISN'T great? It not only has an excellent plot and storyline, it has amazing characters that you can actually believe are real. Hilarious scenes are at every turn, and the music is the best I've ever heard in anime. The only attribute that might be considered bad could be animation (it could be a bit clearer and sharper, but that's about it). However, some people are still not convinced, though they are a remote few... it's time to change their minds! Slayers can be easily understood; even the most ignorant can understand the purpose of why magic amplification is powerful, why seeking the Claire Bible is important, and why saving the world from destruction is essential. However, for the fans that want to find out more, Slayers can be a lot more complicated. With information on history, magic, hierarchy, races, concepts, music, and more, you'll definitely be satisfied with the constant flow of knowledge. Furthermore, Slayers combines a variety of genres: action, adventure, and humor are all blended perfectly, so it appeals to a wide audience. Does anyone realize how GOOD Slayers music is? I doubt that anyone who's watched Slayers hasn't caught themselves humming a tune from it at sometime or other. And that music is intergrated into the series so well, whether it's to set the mood, introduce a character, or show drama. It's part of why the characters are so life-like; it gives the entire series character! Slayers music can also appeal to many people, since there are both slow and fast songs; happy and sad songs; energetic and beautiful songs; an anime can only do so much with its music, but Slayers has somehow passed the barrier. Humor. The side-episodes are hilarious, the diologue is funny, and the way that even the most serious scenes can be sprinkled with just the right amount of comic relief is another amazing thing about Slayers. Is there any other anime that, once again, blends in these elements so flawlessly? For example, sometimes Tenchi Muyo episodes are funny, but really don't add much purpose to the main plot. On the other end of the scale, DragonBall Z episodes are too serious, or people will talk too much between episodes without using humor to make things interesting. I'll admit, that, at times, DragonBall Z DOES incorporate humor well, but just not as often as Slayers. And the characters! They're amazing; after you watch Slayers, you're convinced that you might run into a bad-tempered redhead wherever you go, and you keep a lookout for a purple-haired man. Once again, no other anime compares. The characters even develop a lot throughout the 3 series, so that you feel like you've known them for a long time. Since the miraculousness of the magic and races of Slayers are self-explanatory enough, we'll move on to a new topic: Anti-Slayers fans! So far, I've only met one person that disliked Slayers, and that's my rival. Here are his reasons for not liking Slayers: 1. It's pointless. 2. In Try, everything is in shades of gray. 3. It's corny. It's just my opinion, but those reasons are lame! ^_^ Slayers isn't pointless and corny (see above for support), and I highly doubt that everything in Try was in shades of grey. However, there are some arguments worth debating. For example, several people dislike Slayers because they believe the plot is already used up. A group of travellers facing danger and powerful monsters? Old! That plot is certainly used up, but Slayers has more to it than that. How many times have greedy self-centered sorceresses been the hero(ine)? How often is a chimera, an idiot swordsman, a princess obsessed with justice, a demon, and a dragon been the main cast? And since when have the relationships of gods, demons, and in-between races been filled in so wonderfully? Never! By the time someone has finished watching the 3 series of Slayers, it is almost impossible that they won't change their mind! Another common argument is that Lina Inverse is too powerful. I have two things to say to that: 1. There are many anime cartoons in which the main character(s) are too powerful; 2. THAT'S NOT TRUE!!! Lina may be able to cast the Dragon Slave with ease, and can even manage the chaos spells that call upon the Lord of Nightmares, but the Giga Slave is really not her; it's actually the Lord of Nightmares herself. The Ragna Blade may make her formidable, but it doesn't work on every enemy. Perhaps she's "too powerful" to weaker enemies, but she's definitely NOT against strong mozaku and gods. For example, in the fight against 1-seventh of Shabranigdo, Lina barely won. She used Gourry's Sword of Light to cast the Giga Slave, while Rezo's remaining consciousness held Shabranigdo back. It wasn't all her! And Lina was also exhausted afterward. In the second major battle against Copy Rezo and Zanifar, it was Sylphiel's idea to use the Bless Blade and Flagoon, and everyone had to work hard to distract Copy Rezo/Zanifar so that Lina could strike. Against Gaav, Lina didn't win. Against Phibrizzo, Lina had to be taken over completely by The Lord of Nightmares because she was not powerful enough to win. She cast the Giga Slave for her love of Gourry and Martina's reasoning. Then, Gourry had to save her afterwards. Finally, in the final battle against Valgaav/Dark Star/Volpheed, Lina had to use a prophecy that the Fire Dragon King had told of, with the help of the 5 Dark Star weapons, 4 of which were held and fired by Gourry, Amelia, Zelgadis, and Sirius. To make the spell work, Xellos and Filia had to call upon the powers of the gods and the demons, and although Lina fired the bow and chanted the incantation, it was all from the help of the prophecy, the 5 weapons, the powers of light and darkness, and her companions. Therefore, that's why Slayers is great. With all those great features, and almost no flaws, it's [one of] the best anime around! ^_^ |
